Deadline is reporting there will be a remake of 1984's The Toxic Avenger about a green, environmentally conscious superhero. Original Media acquired the rights to the franchise that includes four sequels, an animated TV series and comic books. It will be produced by Akiva Goldsman, Richard Saperstein and Charlie Corwin. The original was done by Troma Films which boomed in the 80's with a slew of campy, schlocky films. Along with The Toxic Avenger movies, they also did Surf Nazis Must Die, Rabid Grannies and Stuff Stephanie in the Incinerator.
The original film revolved around a Tromaville Health Club mop boy Melvin, who was a gentle wimp whose trusting ways made him easy prey for gym thugs and eventually got him immersed in a vat of toxic waste. The radioactive swill transformed Melvin into Toxie, a misshapen superhero who wreaks havoc on polluters in New Jersey and whose improved muscle tone improved his standing with the chicks.
The remake is expected to be a family friendly PG-13 action comedy.
DogsOfWar-This is a cult classic and one I wish Hollywood would just leave alone. The sequels just got worse as they went along. I also don't know how this could be PG-13 and have any real ties to the original. A movie this bad (and I mean that in a good way) should never be remade.
