TRICK 'R TREAT Director Michael Dougherty Reveals What's Happening With The Long-Delayed Sequel - EXCLUSIVE

It's been a while since we've heard anything about Trick 'r Treat 2, but now Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty has provided us with an update. Find out what he had to say here...

Trick 'r Treat was released back in 2007 and it's since become a cult classic. Revolving around four different characters (played by Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, Anna Paquin, and Brian Cox), the anthology horror movie told four stories with one recurring theme: Sam, a mysterious trick-or-treater.

Since then, the movie's fanbase has continued to expand and a Trick 'r Treat themed "scare zone" was even added to Universal Studios in Orlando in 2017 and 2018. The question is, with a sequel confirmed to be in the works back in 2013, what's currently happening with the long-delayed follow-up?

To promote the UK release of Godzilla: King of the Monsters on Digital Download and home media platforms, we recently asked director Michael Dougherty for an update on what's going on.

"Oh man, it's that time of year! I feel like that's become the new Halloween tradition: ask Mike about Trick 'r Treat 2! [Laughs] Listen, I'm intrigued by the idea and it's completely up to Legendary. It's been a few years since we initially talked about it and there's been a regime change since then. They still have the property and they love it and there's still a long line of merchandise and a continuing line of comic books based on the film but the ball is in their court. The moment they say they're interested and ready to go, we'll see if the stars align. At the same time, I think there's something to be said about not sequelising it. In a business that is obsessed with franchising and spinoffs and prequels and sequels, maybe there's something to be said about just leaving it alone."

So, there you have it! The door is clearly open to the sequel, but until Legendary is ready to move forward with one, it sounds like Dougherty is still mulling over whether he actually wants to return to that particular well. The upcoming Zombieland sequel faces a similar challenge as it has to live up to what's come before while still delivering something new that pleases fans.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is on Digital Download now and on DVD, Blu-ray™, 3D Blu-ray™ and 4K Ultra HD October 14.

Anthology films work better as sequels anyway. And Sam has become the newest and most memorable horror icon in recent years. For some reason a lot of people don't consider Jigsaw to be a horror icon but use the Billy doll in horror images.

Anywho. Trick R Treat is such an interesting franchise. In that universe Zombies and Werewolves exist. It would be interesting to see the sequel explore more horror tropes and creatures like Ghosts, Aliens, Witches, A real Vampire, a mad scientist, and so on. With different Halloween rules being broken.

"I think there's something to be said about not sequelising it."

As much as I love this movie - and I do really looove it - I think Michael Dougherty may be right. This movie has got such a loving following and if the sequel didn't match up it could be harmful to the original. I know being an anthology movie it has a lot of mileage for countless sequels, but with such a terrific cast (Dylan Baker, I'm looking at you in particular), it looks gorgeous and the whole thing meshes together so perfectly that it might be tough to re create that magic a second time.

I would really love to see Sam again, tho.
