WEREWOLF BY NIGHT: Check Out The Terrifying Comic Accurate Designs For Jack Russell And Man-Thing

With Werewolf by Night now streaming on Disney+, we're able to take a closer look at both the title character and Man-Thing, seeing how each character compares to their respective comic book counterparts.

Werewolf by Night arrived on Disney+ earlier today and it's a story unlike any other we've seen from Marvel Studios before. Adding monsters to the MCU suggests Kevin Feige and company have big plans to explore a very different corner of this shared world, and we're hoping that leads to projects like Midnight Suns and Legion of Monsters becoming a reality.

Only a single trailer was released for Werewolf by Night prior to its release, and Marvel Studios built excitement for their first Special Presentation by keeping these monsters under wraps.

Now, though, we're able to take a closer look!

As you can see below, Gael García Bernal was transformed into Werewolf by Night with practical effects that bring the character more in line with his comic book counterpart. He's an uncontrollable beast (for the most part), so we're curious whether the plan is for Jack's personality to shine through more in future projects.

Man-Thing also looks like he's been torn straight from the pages of the comics. We get to see him in black and white and colour, and Marvel Studios absolutely nailed this design.

"A Halloween horror delight, Werewolf by Night is a mighty impressive, macabre Marvel monster tale that introduces some killer new characters and proves Marvel Studios can still find plenty of ways to surprise us," we said in our review yesterday. "More Man-Thing is a must!"

There have already been rumblings that Marvel Studios has plans to continue introducing monsters in specials like this one, and we do hope the wait for more Werewolf by Night and Man-Thing won't be too long. They have a great dynamic and Elsa Bloodstone is another character who it would be fun seeing brought to the forefront in the MCU.

Take a closer look at Werewolf by Night and Man-Thing in the images below:

Good guy Ted, returns the favour without being asked to. Be like Ted.

@DrReedRichards - It's been a while I've heard this kind a joke.. Always cracks me up. Also what's your take. I loved the special. 5* rating from me. I liked they went with practical suit than CGI. I felt even Man-Thing was practical suit in the end. Loved the detailing. I can keep on talking about the show. After a while something brought out the inner kid in me

@MochaKing -

It's more like a 4 for me, closer to a 4,5 than a 3,5.

While I do feel that much of its praise comes from it being a simple homage to classic, it's a damn good one at that, even more so when you consider that this was Giacchino's directorial debut. And his score, oh my God, just all the right notes! Pun heavily intended, obvs.

I did have a few minor gripes like Man-Thing being way too cutesy and balanced with his horror side than leaning more towards its classic latter, but it was by no means enough to lessen the experience.

@DrReedRichards - Yeah agree on the score part... It was amazing. It did elevate the material. Man-Thing, it was fine for me, out of all insanity, he was more sane one for me.

In D+ shows so far I liked score from
1. LOKI
2. Moon knight
3. Werewolf by the night
4. Hawkeye
5. WandaVision.
6. Ms. Marvel

She hulk credit songs are decent but score is meh

@MochaKing -

This is the first stand-alone D+ presentation we've had, so I can't really judge it on a scale of other series that have had significantly more time to develop. I'm gonna have to wait and see how it stands in relation to future similar projects.

@DrReedRichards - The score felt like another character all unto itself by building the feeling of the restrictive environment for the story.

The Man-Thing I grew up reading was barely sentient and had little to no personality. I think I like the Man-Thing that they put on the screen. Terrifying if you are afraid of him but a little bit Ted Salis when he feels friendship. More of a conduit for emotions than just a shambling monster. I can see him with Howard the Duck for sure.

@DrReedRichards - somehow missed this article. Man, what a terrific special feature. Honestly for me I think this is my favorite offering from Marvel this year, surpassing Multiverse of Madness. Loved everything about Werewolf by Night and can't wait to see those guys again.

@HeavyMetal4Life -

With Hellraiser having a resurgence in pop culture recently, and even though we're now in a post-Civil War MCU, is it too much to ask that they do a similar take on Penance next?

Not all Special Presentations need to be an homage to the same era of cinema. Heck, it can be an avenue for Quentin to do his much discussed blaxploitation take on Luke Cage!

HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 10/8/2022, 6:29 PM
@DrReedRichards - that would be pretty neat. I very much hope that the success and acclaim around this special feature will result in more of these specials and fewer D+ series (because even though I bleed MCU, the shows overall haven't lived up to their potential and quality has fluctuated). This special feature to me nailed everything that the shows need to do (and some have to varying degrees, but not necessarily all at once). Also, I was a bit surprised how violent they allowed the special to get, and I hope that is a good sign that Marvel is not afraid to explore darker, more mature material.

It was a very welcome change from the usual comic book stuff. I need more wacky and stylized stuff like this Marvel!

@WhatIfRickJames - I loved all the beautiful designs of this whole thing. Every character. My only gripe is they made Jack’s Werewolf appearance too human like for me. I was hoping it was gonna lean more heavily into the comic book look more, something like this -

Did they ever reference just how Man-Thing ended-up competing in the Sakaar gladiator games? 🤨 I mean, the dude had his head designed onto that 'tower of champions' and everything! We haven't forgotten about it! 🫤

There is certainly more story to tell. They started teasing Man-Thing in Agents of Shield in 2014. I think he's a Feige favorite.

SonOfAGif - 10/9/2022, 3:58 PM
@SuperiorHeckler - Him traveling the Nexus of all Realities is a good basis for why he defends it. It makes sense that he traveled to various realities, planets, and universes and saw the dangers of it. Perhaps him competing in the Sakaar Gladiator matches was a way for him to see what kind of species exist in the universe and then he went back home to the Florida Everglades.

This was by far the best MCU phase 4 project by none. Michael Giacchino the director should have been the director of Dr. STRNAGE 2 and if Fiege smart he makes him the director for Dr. Strange 3 and potentially consider him for BLADE even also or any of the other future horror MCU projects heck wouldn't mind him helming a future X-MEN project too

They literally hired a NEW WRITER, and pushed back the start of production which would of been this month, TO NEXT YEAR.

It is confirmed, there is drama.
smgmayhem
smgmayhem - 10/8/2022, 11:09 AM
@HWestRE420 - Does no one read?! No where in that article do they speak of DRAMA. There was a production shift and it interfered with the directors schedule so he had to leave. He is still on as a producer. No where in the article does it speak of shit being in disarray. Everyone running with that bullshit is reading so much invisible shit between the lines it's ridiculous. They did several rewrites of the script which was the cause for the production shift.
Spoken
Spoken - 10/8/2022, 11:38 AM
@smgmayhem - LOL Right, an actor who still hasn't film a single frame of footage, nor have a proper script or a director. That is the point of the article, is that for years of it's announcement, there hasn't been shit done.

Executive producer credit means nothing, it is just to show someone who worked on a phase in production early on, in this case he will not have any say in any part of the film nor final cut approval.

Actor announced 2019
Writer Febuary 2021
Director September 2021
Full year of rewriting, then finally deciding
New Writer & Director leaves 2022...one month before production beginning.

That is DRAMA. Stop being ignorant...please. That was the point of the article.

DalekCraigWasson
DalekCraigWasson - 10/8/2022, 3:24 PM
@HWestRE420 @smgmayhem - Edgar Wright and Scott Derrickson have similar Executive Producer credits on Ant-Man and MoM respectively, despite having nothing to do with either film after leaving. It's a way of saying thank you for significant contributions to the final film, including casting, production design, major story decisions, etc. Wright left a month before Ant-Man was supposed to shoot too...
Spoken
Spoken - 10/8/2022, 3:42 PM
@DalekCraigWasson - The main difference though between Ant-Man and Blade I feel is.....Wright was in it for a LONG time. He did a lot of work, and had a lot of say in the costume that remained unchanged when the movie came out, same with the screen story as well that by the time Peyton joined on, a lot was already completed in terms of pre-production/production. Cast members had signed on and left production at the same time as well. Remember Patrick Wilson being cast in Ant-Man and then Corey Stoll came in?
