We've had scoopers saying they've found it in fight scene debris, and in portraits on the wall, etc., but nothing so far has convinced us that he's there. Let's review. It all started with this interview director Leterrier gave G4 where he mentioned, “In Iron Man there’s the Captain America shield somewhere. Well in Hulk, you might see Captain America himself.”...
That tease, comparing Cappy's cameo to the scene in Iron Man where a partially constructed shield was seen on a work table in the background of Stark's laboratory, suggests that it may indeed be a minor thing like a portrait on the wall, or something of that nature. Certainly nothing like a full fledged actor dressed in a glaring red, white and blue costume.
Then, after some sources get to see the advanced showing, we get a little more info during the week of press junkets. When reporters from Collider didn't see the cameo from the press preview, they pressed Leterrier to find out exactly where the scene was located in the movie, and they got this...
"No, I can't. Otherwise it's not fun. Are you crazy? It's an Easter egg," said Leterrier. "It's an Easter egg. It's not like oh, it's Captain America and it changes everything. It's still a Hulk movie, but it's really Captain America and it's there, you'll see. It's the real deal. You have to look for it."
This turned out to be a bit of misdirection because later, in an interview with SOS Hollywood, Leterrier not only reveals which scene the cameo occurs, but also revealed that the scene was actually cut out of the finished film.
"There's a point when Bruce Banner gives up on his quest for the cure and decide to kill himself. So he travels far North and reaches the Arctic Circle. You might have seen bits of it in some of the promos. The result was a very dark and strong scene, which Marvel, me and everyone else's considered to be too hard to young audiences to take, so we've cut it. Having that said, when Bruce arrives at his destination he meets up with Captain America! At some point this week, we will make it available on the Internet but I cannot tell you where or when and the material will definitely be on the DVD."
Well, we know that last statement about releasing the scene on the Internet was a bald face lie. Now we have the DVD, and we've watched the alternate beginning--the scene where Banner tries to commit suicide... AND CAPTAIN AMERICA IS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND!
So what is it Louie? Are you a lying bastard or what?!!!
A possible, but infuriating answer to all this is that Louis conned us all by falsely applying the "Captain America" mantle to Emil Blonsky, the villain in the film who WAS injected with the super-soldier serum. In that case, there IS no REAL Captain America cameo (Blonsky isn't even American), just pissed-off, embittered fanboys. At the time Leterrier teased the "Captain America cameo," not everybody knew the storyline would revolve around the super-soldier experiment, or that Ross would shoot Blonsky up with the super-soldier serum prior to being gamma-induced into the Abomination. If that is the answer, then that frickin' froggy is a slick con-artist who misdirected fans, and he needs to be pummeled.
We know some of you have copies of the movie already, even though the DVD isn't available to the public until October 21st. So, we are going to hold a "Find the Captain's Cameo Contest." The first person who can actually find anything that looks like Captain America anywhere on the Incredible Hulk DVD will win a mention on ComicBookMovie.com AND we'll send them a Hulk prize package of comics and dvds. We'll announce it with details a bit later, but if you REALLY think you know where it is, and we can confirm it from our copy of the DVD, then start sending us your submissions now at our scoops page located
