The scenario is this: the first Iron Man movie, Stark was in the desert kidnapped. His life hanging by a thread because of bomb shrapnel close to his heart, he survives because he is a genius and created the arc reactor that prevents the pieces of shrapnel to successfully do what they were meant to do. Happy side effect of the reactor is surplus of energy, which he used in powering up an exoskeleton which me made from scraps of missiles(again genius!). After installing gadgets here, flamethrower there, rocket boots down there and operating it with something like an MS-DOS system he is ready for his great escape.

After toasting some of his captors he escaped fine by blasting off thru the stratosphere. Here then enters my problem while in this height the power from his boots failed and he came crashing to the ground. I have watched a lot of documentary in Discovery channel that says at this height it does not matter whether you hit cement or water it will still feel like cement (I will presume that sand will feel the same way). So, how did Tony survive that fall? Not only did he survive it seems he only suffered some minor bruises.

Did the armor cushion his fall? I would think the armor would have been more detrimental when he hits the ground because you know it is metal and it is hard. Hard things does not really go well with soft skin and brittle bones considering your accelerating towards the ground.

I am stumped I need a better reason how Tony did not end up Splat! That's where you guys come in, you know where to impart your vast knowledge vvv.

I beieve it is call 'artistic license'.

Did we want to see Tony Stark escape the clutches of a ruthless terrorist organisation in a desperate and exhilarating way? YES!

Did we want to see him then get reduced to a bloody smear across the scorching hot sands of Afghanistan? No!

@TheWitness

First off, I don't think he went as far up as the stratosphere. Secondly, he had a lot of cushion without the armor, like cloth and leather, to protect him. And thirdly, it's called artistic license.

also crashing in sand cushions the impact of the fall as opposed to crashing onto the mountain. We never see what was underneath the armor but we gotta think he used some of the cushions and leather to keep himself safe from the metal and the heat it would get from the hot dessert

Eh, it's a fictional movie... who gives a shit.

Fact or fantasy? Um...Fantasy.

Seriously you're worried about this one part despite him using some magnetic device installed into his chest (through his breast bone and all) to keep shrapnel away from his heart...what about the shrapnel cutting his veins up and internally bleed? How about tetanus?

A lot of things in this movie are impossible, it's also a very fictional movie based on a flippin' comic book.

@stumblin: Actually magnetic devices to keep shrapnel away from the heart is a method used in real life. I know a guy who has to use one. I'm not kidding.

@Gatson well according to this guy apparently thats even more believable.

I thought the whole point of movies especially super hero movies was to escape reality for a couple of hours

If you want an explanation, I would say TS, being the genius that he is, knew he was going to blast off, so he designed the suit in a unique and new way that would sustain and distribute all impactful forces around and through the suit, with minimal force oh his own body.
