Jon Favreau Talks Iron Man 2 Villains

The film's director questions whether the sequel can successfully manage three villains, which has been the downfall of several other superhero flicks.

The sequel to the 2008 blockbuster Iron Man has been described as a film about secret dangers, the sins of the father and the nasty price of modern celebrity. If that isn't enough for our hero to handle, the amount on villains he has to take on this time around has tripled. Tony Stark will face off against Mickey Rourke's Whiplash, Sam Rockwell's Justin Hammer and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow (whose ultimate allegiance is still in question). The LA Times' Hero Complex recently spoke to director Jon Favreau about the difficulty juggling so many baddies in one film,

"You want to be sure you don't suffer from multi-villainitis," he said. "That's been the downfall of many other superhero franchises."

The fan favorite director didn't go into detail about the franchises he was referring to, one can safely assume Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and Joel Shumacher's Batman films are part of the mix.

There's no need to worry about Iron Man 2 suffering the same hate, though. Favreau took the time to guarantee his villains aren't used as pointless plot devices, but have an emotional connection to the film's protagonists.

"I was more concerned about the interpersonal dynamic and how the presence of Natasha [a.k.a. the Black Widow, played by Johansson] would affect Tony and Pepper, because what I didn't want to do is make this film episodic, like just another episode of a TV series. So one way to approach that is shift the dynamic with the introduction of new characters. So you have Justin Hammer [Rockwell] inserted into the Tony-Rhodey relationship, and you have Natasha Romanoff inserted into the Tony-Pepper relationship. When done right, a superhero movie has the character's personal life mirroring what's happening in their superhero world, and sometimes you have to force things to do it. In this case, I'd say, we found an organic way to do it. We wanted both A-story and B-story to be affected by these new characters."

With Iron Man 2 hitting theaters in only a few short weeks, fans will be able to judge for themselves whether the curse of comic book movie "multi-villainitis" will finally be broken.

Fav's so right. That why Batman Begins works so well (which he seems to have taken some inspiration from). The villains should directly reflect some aspect of the main hero.

You have Ra's Al Ghul/Henri Ducard commenting on the vigilatism aspect of batman.

You have scarecrow commenting on the use of fear aspect.

You have Falcone commenting on the organised crime aspect.

And Earle commenting on the corporate aspect of batman.

Seems like Ironman 2 is going down this route which should mean we won't get too many villains spoiling the broth (mixing my metaphors, I know). By using the baddies like this means that the main hero doesn't get swamped and reduced to a bit part in his own film (i.e. Batman Returns).

Really starting to enjoy anticpating this film now - the home stretch! YAY!

You can in no doubt have a good movie with many villains look at Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Daredevil(I thought it wasn't bad except for the playground scene). All you need is each character contribuating to the movie and not being a useless shoved in villain like Venom.

If the story is great than there is no problem if there is more than one villain. Favreau knows what the fans want and it will definitely be awesome.

The reason why i think it'll work this time is because all of the villains are related to one another in the story. They're all connected. Whereas in movies like Spiderman 3 you had Sandman, Venom, and "New" Goblin, who they just sort of mashed together.

I would actually prefer to see a properly done, modernized, Bane for Batman 3. The new 'world of Batman' is more realistic than the Tim Burton flicks and drugs, violence, and fear are a big part of it. What better villain to represent the evils of drugs than Bane? It could be done very well - ya got super steroids, cocaine, corporate evil and political intrigue. Bane is the way to go.

I think the new Batman films have done a wonderful job at balancing the villains. I think the new Batman could pull off three, with The Riddler and Catwoman in the first half of the film and Bain in the latter half. Of course Bain would kill Catwoman and piss off Batman then, you have a badass ending fight scene.

yeah, but Widow might start out as a villain, or at least someone thats bringing a conflict into the movie. same with Hammer. He's a villain, he might not be a SUPERVILLAIN, but he's still an antagonist.

I was worried that the movie would be too crowded with all of the new characters and villains being introduced but after reading the novel I now have no such worries! In fact, it's amazing that they were able to include so much without it ending up a disaster like Spider-Man 3! :P

The Dark Knight Villains
*Scarecrow
*The Joker
*Two-Face
Result = Awesome

Spiderman 3 Villains
*Green Goblin 2
*Sandman
*Venom
Result = Stupid

So what's the difference here? Balance. No jumping around characters or jumbling them up. Just balance them out. If Nolan can do that then so can Favereu. But I didn't know Black Widow would be a villian, weird, but I 'll go with it.

can you really consider the Scarecrow a villain in TDK?? he didn't really do anything, or have anything to do with the story, other than tie up the plot thread of being on the loose at the end of Batman Begins. but he could have not been there at all, and it would't have changed the movie in the least bit.
Orphix
Orphix - 4/9/2010, 9:54 AM
@Airbender - Its not just balance that makes those villains work. It's how they add to the story and the main heros character.

Two-face is literally a mirror image of batman in many ways but coming from a different angle. So we learn a lot about Batman just by the way Harvey Dent slowly falls apart.

Green Goblin 2, Sandman and Venom all could have worked if they were connected to Spiderman in a deeper way. All three had much to say about spiderman's character if use better but unfortunately the whole thing felt forced and unbelievable.

When it turned out that Sandman had actually shot Ben (when there had been no clues before) and that Venom just, by chance, appeared out of nowhere on a meteorite I felt kind of cheated.

@orphix-Well I figured Catwoman could steal from Wayne Enterprises and Bruce tries to figure out who she is and falls for Sylina Kyle and figures it out. The Riddler could hire Bain to hunt down Batman and to get to Batman/Bruce Wayne Bain kills Catwoman. I could go into it a lot more but no one would really care..just thought it would be a cool idea.

Your right. Black widow IS NOT a "villain." She's not even a "Bad guy." I bet nothing she does in this movie is detrimental to tony/Ironman.

@CDB
By definition alone scarecrow is a villain. I love how your like "can you really consider the Scarecrow a villain in TDK?? he didn't really do anything, or have anything to do with the story" Then you go on to answer your own question with "other than tie up the plot thread of being on the loose at the end of Batman Begins." All his action from batman begins makes him a villain. That doesn't change just because he "didn't really do anything" & was only in there for 8 min.
Also how can you get on that tankgirl's case when your commenting more then she is!?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 4/9/2010, 11:35 AM
@ mativ

first of all, i called tankgirl annoying because all she's doing is pimping her articles...over...and over...and over again in the same damn article. even the editor got onto her about it and deleted some of her posts. so drop the knight in shining armor routine. it was never about how MUCH she's posting, but WHAT she's posting.

second, i know Scarecrow is a villain. but i don't think it really applies, or counts as a third villain, (in context with this article) when he had NOTHING to do with the plot of the movie. he literally could have been taken out OR replaced with average joe scum-bag, and it wouldn't have mattered one single bit. Zasz was in Batman Begins, but does that count as a third villain in the film?? no.

the article is about having too many villains, to the point where the movie gets bogged down. Of course you can't count Scarecrow as a third villain, he was only on screen for 3 or 4 minutes. how in the hell could he possibly bog down the plot of the movie when he's not even in it. my god...
DogsOfWar
DogsOfWar - 4/9/2010, 11:43 AM
Tell it CDB! Tell it!

Yeah, it like Bane in Batman & Robin, oh wait, bad example. Really, that wasn't even Scarecrow in TDK-just a washed out junkie version. It was nice to see him in there but wouldn't have changed anything if he wasn't.
