Robert Downey Jr. on The Avengers and Iron Man 2!

The actor talks about getting The Avengers right and why the best is yet to come for the armor-clad superhero!

Downey told SFX Magazine that 2012's The Avengers will be Marvel Studios main event after four years of build up that started with Iron Man in 2008, and if they're going to do it then it had better be done right.

"It's the pinnacle, but only if it's done in the smartest and best and most creatively sound way possible," he said. "And I'm not saying we can't get there. I'm just saying it would be better to get there and not stay on schedule than to get everyone what they were hoping for in terms of a release date but not do it correctly. And by correctly, I mean my way," he laughed.

The actor went on to talk about Tony Stark's evolution as a character in the upcoming sequel, "In Iron Man 2, Tony's psyche undergoes quite a rupture because he no longer has that kind of was trade to tweak on. What's a fella to do? He's thinking more about his legacy and about sustaining his own corporeal being, which has always been a problem, and now obviously comes much more to the fore because he essentially has a nuclear reactor as part of his anatomy!"

"Stan Lee created (and of course I'm biased) his greatest character in Tony Stark," said the actor. "The number of offshoots in comics, TV, animation and now movies, and the people who have taken him from the '60s to the '70s, to the '80s and to the present day - everyone has done a great job of expanding the character and building on his inherent hostility through the guise of technology."

The darkness that burns within Tony is what has both driven the sequel and convinced the 44-year old actor to come back for the sequel. "There's a dark side to Tony Stark because of his impending death. But there are also all the people and characters around him who bring him to life."

"There's this huge world that's so much fun, and it's great to go back there, erase the chalkboard with Jon and say, 'Okay. This thing came out, people really liked it and it did great business, but what are we going to do now?'"

Iron Man 2 will be released later this year on April 30th in the UK and a week later in the US. For the full interview, be sure to check out this months issue of SFX Magazine!

Cool article, Downey is the man. I'm sure IM2 will be great but I'd love to see Norton as Banner show up at some point, even for just a post credits scene.

Good article Josh

Its great they are getting into the character & dynamics, I just hope they don't overthink every dynamic & character trait. This should still be a fun, action packed comic book movie after all.

HAWK: Maybe that has to do with that shot in the trailer of what looks like the reactor spreading throughout Tony's chest, looking almost like a virus or something. Perhaps...

And welcome back :)

Is it just me, or does Robert seem to think that "Iron Man" is the best film of his entire career? I mean, it's great and all, but I'd say that "Chaplin" is 20 times better. I'm a huge fan of the character of Tony Stark and all that is around him in his stories, but even so.

Oh great find josh@ This definitely takes away all doubt. Now we know that he will continue with all other projects involving ironman. About the avengers I'm sure they will able to do in time, but he is very right. A little postponement will not be such a matter,if they need it

Thanks guys! :)

OZY: Why the [frick] would you want them to "take a break" from making some of the best and most faithful CBM's ever!? I mean, are you seriously saying you dont want a new Iron Man movie every two years!?! I'd be happy with any CBM whether its Spider-Man, Captain America or Batman coming out as quickly as every two years as long as they keep up the great quality! (which so far Iron Man 2 seems to be doing!)

Mmm me too josh@ Unfortunately, now we know that at most a year is spent for filming, and the next for the release. So 2 movies on 2011 and 2013 and one on 2010 and 2012 by marvel. But in the meantime hopefully WB,Sony,Fox etc. will do their stuff. I'd be fine with a couple of movies a year

I get the sense of apprehension from Mr. Downey, can't say I blame him. I think only now he realizes that Iron Man is now a money making machine, a proven commodity. A film that has become bigger then it's stars, and bigger in scope with every future release, I hope he's ready for the ride. I wouldn't want to see him bail out because of the weight of playing this role, and I don't mean the damn suit.

YOU KNOW WATS COOL?, WITH IRON MAN, ITS A GIVEN EVERY MOVIE YOULL SEE A NEW SUIT, NEW WEAPONS, A NEW CHALLENGE PSYCHOLOGICALLY, AND AN ENEMY THAT CAN MATCH HIM..THE WAY FAV HAS SET IT UP IT COULD MIRROR ANY NUMBER OF ALL TIME FAVORITE STORY ARCHS IRON MAN HAS HAD..THE FORMULA IS GENIUS..PURE GENIUS AND ITS A DEFINITE CASH COW.
