Marvel Studios Nearly Greenlit A WAR MACHINE Movie Shortly After The Release Of IRON MAN 2

Black Panther may be the first Marvel Studios movie with a black lead but that wasn't always going to be the case! Now, screenwriter Joe Robert Cole reveals that Marvel nearly greenlit War Machine.

Black Panther is set to be released next week and the movie has generated a lot of buzz because it's the first Marvel Studios release to feature a black lead. However, screenwriter Joe Robert Cole has now revealed that he once pitched a War Machine movie to Kevin Feige and company which came close to being greenlit until Iron Man 3 changed plans for the hero and Marvel decided against developing it.

"At that meeting, they also said they were thinking of doing a War Machine movie," Cole confirmed. "I pitched a concept and won that job to write the script but they decided, based on what Iron Man 3 was going to be, they weren’t going to do War Machine anymore. But they asked if I’d be interested in joining their writer’s program instead." So, it worked out well for him but not for poor old Rhodey!

War Machine later appeared in Captain America: Civil War and will be seen in Avengers: Infinity War this May so the character has received a fair bit of screentime since Iron Man 3 was released in 2013. Whether or not the success of Black Panther will help the hero get his own movie remains to be seen. Would you guys like to see War Machine as the lead of his own spinoff? Share your thoughts below.

THey would never do it, but a dark movie with him in africa would be badass.

Who are War Machine’s villains/supporting characters? Does he have anything exclusive to himself that doesn’t overlap with Iron Man?

@PicolasCage - It's been a long time since I read his old solo series, but some quick refresher on Google reminds me of "the Rush Club". Basically "The Deadliest Game" with robot suits. But beyond that, he's not had a whole lot of solo titles to foster his own rogues gallery. (Many characters have hundreds of truly solo series and still don't have a whole lot of good ones.)

I would imagine that a War Machine movie (aimed at a ~2013 release) would probably be more-or-less an expansion of what we saw him doing in Iron Man 3. In-theater Mid-East terrorist-busting. That probably makes more sense than Rhodey going after (yet-more) guys in robot suits, just like Iron Man did.

And a War Machine solo franchise does offer an opportunity to mine Force Works without the characters having to compete with RDJ's screen presence.

@PicolasCage - "The Advisor" is described by comic vine as War Machine's arch nemesis. I... don't think I remember him. Apparently he's had about 10 comic appearances. Maybe worth checking the OHOTMU.

Seems like little-more than an institutional schemer type. Obviously they could use him, but he's not going to light the world on fire.

@Spock0Clock - the Advisor? Damn, my man Rhodey needs some work lol, they should pump some resources into a new solo for him. Put Charles Soule on it, he’s pretty great at fleshing out underdeveloped/underrated ideas.

I’m not sure how much I would go for a War Machine movie without a recognizable villain (compared to generic terrorists), but if they could work Hammer in there somewhere I would be all for it lol

@Spock0Clock - you know, that might actually be better though. Bringing in an unknown lets them cast a great actor who can change the character and make it their own. Give then some creepy ticks, and just go crazy with it.

Existing villains would be bringing baggage and fan expectations

@PicolasCage - Plenty of unused Iron Man villains to explore in any event. Shit, do the "real Mandarin", and if Tony is still alive, let him be a consultant.

@HarrowRed - It worked pretty well with Kaecilius. While not the best villain, he provided plenty of worldbuilding antagonism for a character with only a handful of appearances.

Though, I find it hard to imagine someone doing more with that basic shtick than Redford did. Dude in a suit pulls strings from within institutions worked in Winter Soldier, but doing it again (and even again if you count the Vice President in Iron Man 3) and you're rapidly approaching a Marvel universe where the government is always constantly infiltrated with the enemy.

It would've been cool, but with War Machine-proper.

Rhodes is just a less interesting iron man. No thanks.
