This cast is shaping up to be truly epic. Joining Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Dominic West, Polly Walker, Samantha Morton and Willem Dafoe are James Purefoy(Solomon Kane) as Kantos Kan, Captain of the ship Xavarian, Mark Strong(Sherlock Holmes) as Matai Shang, ruler of the godlike Therns and the already rumored Thomas Haden Church(Spider man 3) as Tal Hajus, a vicious Thark warrior.

Yeah I know, a lot of funny alien names and no descriptions. Well, the lovely folk at Empire have kindly color coded the Martians for us..

"that means that Church's character belongs to the savage race of Green martians, so we're guessing he'll be largely unrecognisable, being 10-12' tall, green, four-armed and with eyes on the sides of his head. Purefoy's character is one of the Red martians, so basically humanoid, while Strong's character is one of the white-skinned Thern, who are bald but wear wigs"

Lets hope this turns out to be as impressive as its cast.

Not that familiar with John Carter of Mars...but any movie with a green 12' four-armed eyeballs on the side of the head critter has got to be kick ass...!!!

Is it just me or does it seem like a swing is beginning towards serious Sci-Fi again? John Carter of Mars, Avatar, Green Lantern, the reemergence of Star Trek, all of these things are coming down the pipe. I'm really glad to see this, but it does make me worry a little; comics have been the summer movies for ten years now... could this branching out into new genres mean the CBM craze may be starting to wane with the general public? This may also be good for DC/WB however seeing as how their comics tend to have a stronger Sci-Fi theme with books like GL, the New Gods, Rann and Thanagar, etc. So far with the exception of the truly horrible FF franchise Marvel has shied away from its cosmic characters.

@Corndog, John Carter of Mars was written a long time ago by Edgar Rice Burroughs (Tarzan). It's a classic and is one of the coolest sci-fi stories ever written! Can hardly wait for this! It's looking fantastic!

@Nerosday, I think you're right and the swing is towards more mature sci-fi but that's what superhero movies should be too, serious sci-fi, if done right! Most comics have always had quite grown-up themes to them, not just for little kids! Hollywood, please stop the stupid camp and silly humor in CBM'S, ple-e-ease!!!

Love the way this film is sounding and it does seem like a great cast. As long as they don't go crazy on CGI i think this movie has great potential. Anyone know where to read the story?

With all the hoopla does that mean they announced that a different studio is taking over? Such as Touchstone or Mirimax?

That is what it will take to get a non-kiddie 'G' movie.

Until that happens it means that Woola will not be a vicious and deadly war Calot gleefully ripping JC's enemies to shreds in epic Braveheart'ish mass battles. But instead Woola will be cute and cuddly and JC will glare his enemies down and scare them away....

With a cast this good I'd hate to see a bad movie out of it. I'm very hopeful if they stick with the book.

nerosday - Dude, someone stole your avatar!

Don't worry, as long as CBMs keep on grossing big numbers, they'll always be around! The Dark Knight, Watchmen and Iron Man ring any bells? I'm just excited that the bar has finally been raised! We are truly spoiled nowadays! No more bad CBMs! Hooray!!

That artwork looks familiar! Didn't Frazetta base a painting on JCOM?

I wonder how close they will stick to the book. If they stick pretty close, there will be a lot of skin to look at. They might have to tone it down a bit or have Lynn wear some well placed jewels. I hope that most of DeFoe's character is CGI because I don't want to see him in a loincloth.
