I noticed this story floating around different sites yesterday but nothing seemed to be confirmed, so I didn't post it. Now, COLLIDER is claiming they have confirmation that Disney has indeed changed the title of Andrew Stanton's upcoming film John Carter of Mars to the simple and bland sounding John Carter. There is no word on the reasoning behind the name change at this time and I for one, couldn't even offer you a guess as to why Disney decided on the change.

Brief synopsis from COLLIDER...

Academy Award(r)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton brings this captivating hero to the big screen in a stunning adventure epic set on the wounded planet of Mars, a world inhabited by warrior tribes and exotic desert beings. Based on the first of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “Barsoom Series,” the film chronicles the journey of Civil-War veteran John Carter, who finds himself battling a new and mysterious war amidst a host of strange Martian inhabitants.

Directed by Andrew Stanton and starring Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe, James Purefoy, Mark Strong, Bryan Cranston and Lynn Collins John Carter is due out March of next year.

I have been seriously looking forward to this movie and I still am. However, dropping the cool part of the name makes no sense. The only thing that even remotely makes any sense with this is that maybe Disney dropped the "of Mars" because of the disaster they went through recently with the film Mars Needs Moms.

Mars may be a sore spot with them right now.

Have any of you actually read the book(s)? "Barsoom" could just as easily be any planet other than Mars, and with what we know of Mars now, it would just be confusing to describe it as "John Carter of Mars." However, I agree that "John Carter" alone is too bland.

A well-done film of the Barsoom stories could be fantastic, but it will have a lot of trouble with more modern sensabilities. The first book, "Princess of Mars," was written around 1911. It is a great adventure story, but it shows a moral code that modern audiences may have a problem with. It also kind of objectifies women, and everyone is naked except for some ornimentation.

CherryBomb: If Lynn Collins is involved I don't care if it's a twosome, threesome, foursome or a onesome that I can only watch. That's one pretty lady.

@Tea "I don't wanna sound like a queer or nuthin', but I think unicorns are [frick]in' awesome!"

That was a fun movie to get as a Christmas gift from my brother, while at my very Baptist grandmothers house, btw. Trying to explain "It's a superhero movie, about a porn superhero, but it's ok, he's Mormon!"

Wow, that's a really dumb idea. I know the movie's gonna be amazing, but why drop "of Mars"? That's like a huge point of the story!

Dumb.

This had better not be a portent of "other" things being changed from the Martian Chronicles.

Speaking of Lynn Collins:

Did yall see her nude in Allure magazine a few years ago? I would post the pic, but I don't want a troll badge :)

@UltimateIronAgnelX, because a movie titled "A Princess of Mars" from Disney sounds like it goes with Cinderella and Snow White.

By the way, you know that the books are public domain and can be downloaded for free?
