Joker is set for its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this month, and in anticipation, director Todd Philips has shared a new look at star Joaquin Phoenix in full clown makeup as he fixes us with a bone-chilling glare from the cover of Il Venerdi magazine.

The movie doesn't open until October 4, but has already generated quite a lot of buzz - both positive and negative. Those who have seen it offer very high praise for Phoenix's turn as Arthur Fleck and believe he has a good shot at an Oscar nomination. However, a leaked version of the script has also come in for some backlash because it reportedly depicts the main character - who is a mass-murdering psychopath - as a mass-murdering psychopath.

Joker also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham. The movie's worldwide premiere takes place at the Venice Film Festival on August 31, at 7pm Central European/1pm Eastern/10am Pacific.

Tell us, are you looking forward to Joker ? Drop us a comment down below, and have a scroll through some hi-res screengrabs from the first trailer.

So far I’m excited, I’m typically against telling Jokers origins but I’m taking this as either an Elseworlds story or just one potential story Joker would tell like in TDK or the Killing Joke. I’d be happy if this was just a one and done and they didn’t try to add him to any kind of universe which I think is the plan at the moment but maybe they’ll try to fold it into whatever Matt Reeves Batman is

@Ha1frican - thats what im thinking they're doing. Just a general story of a man slowly becoming a psychopath that also has batman references then we'll get an actual joker for the batman trilogy coming up.

@Origame - this almost sounds like some sort or overarching plan by DC... i just don't see that happening... we will likely get another version for a bats movie... and DC will have had no overall plan to make it all make sense.

@Ha1frican -
From the trailer, interviews, and plot leaks, it does look like this Joker has more in common with the Pre-Alan Moore Joker than the modern Joker that most comic book readers are used to.

If you read the comics from the 1970s, such as The Laughing Fish and Joker's Five Way Revenge, the Joker actually was mentally ill. He even had inner monologue boxes that derailed and made no logical sense. The intelligent nihilist "embodiment of evil" Joker came after The Dark Knight Returns and The Killing Joke.

He's also wearing the Cesar Romero suit, which further shows that this is probably a Pre-Crisis style Joker. Todd Phillips was mostly warning fans not to go full elitist because of it being a grounded version that takes a lot of liberties. We're definitely not going to see him fall into a vat of chemicals or any pre-existing origin story from the comic.
