We didn't get to see a whole lot from Joker last week but the movie is once again shooting on location in New York and this latest batch of set photos puts the spotlight on a meeting between Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) and Sophie Dumond (Zazie Beetz). Apparently, they were catching up in a doughnut shop but Arthur looks a tad manic in some of the shots so who knows what's really happening here.

Sophie has been described as a hardened single mother who has been beaten down by her time living in Gotham City and many fans believe that she will serve as Arthur's love interest here. Whether or not she breaks his heart and sets him on the path to becoming the Clown Prince of Crime remains to be seen but it would make sense and we have seen photos of him seemingly following or arguing with her.

Are you excited to see Beetz take on this very different role after playing Domino in Deadpool 2? What do you think might be happening in this scene? Feel free to share your theories in the usual place.

CURIOSITY garnered for this film. Not actively looking forward to it, though. This is a studio exec's wild fever dream, thinking this is edgy and what the movie-going audience wants. Hope this is good, at the least. More and more, I'm hoping this superhero bubble pops, leaving Marvel the only group in town to make superhero flicks.

At least with Marvel, you don't need a shower when the film is over.

@regularmovieguy - He is not wrong tho. This movie is everything what's wrong with Hollywood. But, it's Joker so it get's a golden pass. And movie actually looks cool despite it.

@Neno - Under what I mean wrong spinoff with possible reboot of existing character without his main arch enemy and origin. Do you see how wrong this movie sounds?

@Neno

If they can make an interesting standalone movie I have no problem with that. And that seems to be exactly what they’re doing.

Not everything has to be connected with the promise of sequels and macguffins down the line.

Am I the only one who feels that this role might be a personal undertaking for Phoenix? Not many people know this, but he and Heath Ledger were good friends and regularly hung out together. I'd imagine his passing hit Phoenix pretty hard at the time. I know he said that he wouldn't let the other actors who've played before him "intimidate" him, but I feel he somewhat wants to make Heath proud in doing the role well. Kind of like a good buddy passing the torch for you to keep the race going. Either way, the movie still looks great and I can finally say I'm hyped about something from DC.

It is scenes like these that will make the Joker sympathetic...thus defeating the point of Joker's persona as the personification of chaos.

@Forthas - which is my fundamental issue with this film... Joker's origin being mysterious and unknown was a defining characteristic.

And the Phoenix version looks just TOO clowny for me right now. I don't like the red painted nose.

I'm still curious though... the cast really interests me.

Wait until you see Arthur Fleks Stand-up act at "Pogo's" Comedy Club. I am in that Scene.

So this comes out in just over a year right? When do you guys think we could expect a trailer? Phoenix is a great actor so I'm really looking forward to seeing his portrayal.
