Robert De Niro In Talks For A Key Role In Joaquin Phoenix's JOKER

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that 2x Academy Award-winner Robert De Niro is currently in talks to join Warner Bros.' upcoming Joker movie, which will star 3x Academy Award-nominee Joaquin Phoenix in the title role.

If/when his deal closes, he'll portray a talk show host that will have an integral role to play in the Joker's descent into madness and ascension to the Clown Prince of Crime. Variety adds that the Joker script shares some similarities with Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy, which starred De Niro as a struggling comedian who kidnaps a popular talk show host to get famous - except, this time, the roles will be reversed as Phoenix will play the comedian while De Niro tackles the role of an arrogant host.

Todd Phillips (The Hangover) is helming the standalone feature, which carries a modest $55 million production budget, with a script he co-wrote alongside Scott Silver (The Fighter). Plot details remain under lock-and-key at Arkham Asylum, but the story is expected to be set in Gotham City during the early 1980s.

Production is expected to begin this September in New York and WB has already dated the film for an October 4, 2019 release.

@rebellion - Or, it could just be a good movie.

Amazing actor. I hope he gets cast. This movie is a complete wildcard at the moment. This could easily be one of the best upcoming DC films... Or a complete misguided disaster. I'm cautiously optimistic, though.

@Darkknight2149 - Same here, but I'm more on the doubtful side above anything else at this moment, even with the fantastic cast and crew assembled so far.

De Niro's involvement doesn't automatically equate movie quality. He's become more of a spoof of himself recently.
The proof will be in the movie. Phoenix's performance could = good things. He's surprised a lot of us before.

The plot and existence of this movie may worry me a little...but they're trying to put together an outstanding cast.

Doesn't he mostly phone it in now? No disrespect, he is a GOAT.

@BlackBeltJones - Yup he has been on cruise control for the last decade which is sad because like you said he's the GOAT.

@CurlyBill - Not disagreeing with you, as he definitely has chosen some iffy films the last decade, but I thought he was great in Silver Linings Playbook and The Intern.

I wonder if he will be like Jack Palances character from the 89 Batman and be a crime boss that the Joker kills to take over his organization.

Alot of bizarre hate towards this project, on the surface everything seems perfectly fine to me...

@BigMikeReviews - I think the hate isn't on this film in particular but at the way WB is producing these films.

They're making an awful shared movie universe while making standalone projects of current heroes/villains while still releasing other film and TV projects with no connection.

Fans want to be investing their time and money on something worth while. If WB continues to reboot, spinoff, and make more standalone projects with no continuity it will continue driving casuals away.

@SonOfAGif - Yea I agree that WB is not managing these films in any coherent manner, but on it's own merits this specific movie does interest me alot

DeNiro's not a genre actor. He's good within confines that accommodate his range. And to lawndart's point, he's a shadow of himself and that thinning began a long, long time ago. Moreover, DeNiro doesn't convey "indie", he conveys establishment and demographics and calculation of the worst most anti-artistic sort.

Isn't there another Christoph Waltz waiting to be found or Hugh Jackman where their media driven identity is something waiting for them in the future rather than ringing them into every room well before they enter it?

See The Master, Phoenix could surprise in the role of The Joker. And it will be believable in every sense conveyed with the announced production precisely because Phoenix has held onto his artistic integrity.

The last thing I want in my comic-book-based movies is an addled identity politics activist infecting the escape.

His last most public rant...Words I wish he'd live by as well.

@Zounds - He never has before and I do not see why he would now. He is pretty good at keeping the two separate.
