Karl Urban Talks Up Judge Dredd!

Karl Urban tells MTV how much of a Judge Dredd fan he is and that this version will be nothing like Stallone's Dredd.

In a recent interview with MTV Karl Urban had some pretty cool things to say about Judge Dredd.

"I can say that the producers of this film are going to make a very gritty, hardcore, faithful adaptation of the comic. Mr. Wagner, who created the character, and Jock, one of the key artists, have been on board as collaborators right from the beginning."

"It is no way related to any previous film versions."

"I'm thrilled to bits about this opportunity, I've been reading 'Dredd' in one form or another for 25 years, so to be given the opportunity to portray such an enigmatic, iconic comic book character is one that I'm absolutely elated about."

Hawksblueyes: To me he sounds like he genuinely wants to do the character justice.

Stallone's version was such a dud, this one should have no problem beating the crap out of it.

Nice one. Unfortunately while it might have nothing to do with Stallon'es abomination, from what I have heard of the script it also sounds like it won't have too much to do with the comic! At least the general story. I'm sure Urban will do his best to do the character justice.

Ror: Unfortunately I can't say too much about it because I'm not familiar with the comics. I didn't like the Stallone movie at all. Urban does sound like a fan of the books.

Check out my Avengers editorial about 6 articles down in Main and let me know what you think. I always like to hear your take on things.

I think the most important aspect of this is that they get the tone right. Dredd, the comic, is gritty but has a large element of black humour and satire in it. It would be nice to see the Dark Judges, Judge Anderson or a true representation of the Angel family but I don't think its essential for this. If they do a good job and establish the franchise then they will have a wealth of source material to delve into. The Apocalypse War strip would be a decnt movie in its own right. IMO

HUGE fan of Stallone's Dredd but i can't wait to see what Urban will bring :))

Schneider's cameo will be a stapler on a desk.

I liked STALLONE's JUDGE DREDD right up to the point of him taking his HELMET off! : P

(15 minutes in)

Then it all went to SH1T!

Can't wait for this!

Yeah I would love to see all that. But It looks like its gonna be more of a straight up chase thriller. Its been liked to 16 Blocks of all things! I don't mid too much but I would like that element of satire in there somewhere. And Dredd should not be a hero in anyway shape or form, we need to hate the prick..and still root for him. I doubt Urban will allow much else if he is as big a fan as he claims.

how come every cbm protagonist ''has been reading this stuff and always wanted to play this character''? and i liked stallone's dredd. watched it yesterday on tv. even if he took the helmet off, i liked the movie. gotta love the '90s. it was a great cyberpunk movie.

Denn1s- You and me both, man! I LOVED the character that Stallone gave us, whether it was the true Dredd or not. I never followed the books so i guess that's the only reason why i love it so much. Truth be told, yet again, Dredd is my absolute favorite Stallone movie! You name it, it ain't as good to me LOL And i loved plenty of his films too ;)

Good points Ror, if Wagner is collaborating on it then I hope for a faithful rendition.

This is some good news, I always like to hear when actors are serious in staying true to the source material and not just doing it for a paycheck.

Denn1s said...

Well there are 2 main possibilities here. One is that he is telling the truth. The other is that he is speaking in HollySpeak. Actors know that there are things they simply should not say even if they are the truth. So if the truth is that he just needed a job and this is his next one he has to switch to HollySpeak aka lying.

When you fail to use HollySpeak properly you cause problems that never go away. The dumbest thing Brian Singer ever said in his life was admitting he did not care much for Comics. You just cannot say that if you are going to make a freaking CBM.

Wonder who is the bad guy?... I hope we see Judge Death, Rico Dredd, Chief Judge Cal, Judge Anderson, Morton Judd, Chief Judge Fargo, Armon Gill, Chief Judge McGruder, Judge Grice and The Angel Gang in this!:D... Yeah I know! Lot of names! But still hoping they are in this!
