EDITORIAL: Why Is There So Much Praise Over STAR WARS: EPISODE 7 And There Is Hate For JUSTICE LEAGUE

After reading the news and comments written on the reveal of Star Wars: Episode 7, LEVITIKUZ asks why is there so much praise for Episode 7 in articles and yet there is so hate on articles about Justice League

Today we heard the exciting news that Disney brought LucasFilms. Not only had that but Disney announced that they are making Star Wars: Episode 7. This is the type of news that shocks everyone. No one saw this and yet we all love it. Growing up I loved 3 things: Star Wars, superheroes, and basketball. I am very excited at the fact a new Star Wars movie is coming out but as I looked through the comments I noticed something. Other than people saying there shouldn’t be a 7th movie, there was no hate. As we know WB’s announced that they are making a Justice League film and articles are that will get some hate. I don’t understand how Star Wars: Episode 7 is getting praised and the Justice League isn’t. It seems strange. Let’s review.

Now everyone says that Justice League is a response to Marvel’s The Avengers film. Yes it could be but let us not forget that a Justice League film was being planned and went into production before a Avengers movie but got canceled. Yea it’s a response but can’t we say the same about Star Wars? Let’s face it the success of J.J Abrams Star Trek reboot and the hype around the sequel, of course Star Wars would try to put out another movie to compete with Star Trek. It’s a fact.

Now we don’t even know a plot to this movie and it’s getting more hype than Justice League. They could do Knights of the Old Republic or maybe The Force Unleashed or continue on with Luke’s story or maybe something else entirely. With Justice League we at least know the story will revolve around Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern and maybe others teaming up to save Earth from some threat. With Star Wars 7, we have no idea.

Let’s talk characters here. First off people complained about “how is WB’s going to introduce the Justice League members in one film.” In the original Star Wars trilogy, the main characters were Han Solo, Leia, and Luke and had supporting characters like R2, C-3PO, Chewbacca, Wedge, Lando, Vader, and others. In the prequel trilogy, the main characters were Anakin, Padme, and Obi-Wan while the supporting characters were Mace, Yoda, R2, and others. My point is Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman can be the main characters and have Green Lantern, Flash and others be supporting and it can work. Now for Star Wars 7, we don’t know what characters will be in it.

Now how are we so sure Disney can handle a franchise? Don’t say The Avengers. Disney didn’t do anything for the Avengers. Disney brought Marvel when Avengers was being produced and just slapped their name in the credits and took some of the earnings. Disney will isn’t going to be hugely involved in Marvel movies because Marvel is making Marvel movies. Disney will have to now make Star Wars movies now that Lucas is gone. It may seem good that Lucas is gone but it’s not Lucas’s Star Wars, its Disney’s Star Wars. This will prove whether or not Disney can handle a franchise. Now everyone focuses on the negative with WB’s and comic book movies but let’s look at the positives. Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy is not only the greatest comic book trilogy but one of the best trilogies of all time. The first 2 Superman films were great along with Burton’s 2 Batman films. Zack Snyder’s Watchmen is visually the best comic book movie ever and Man of Steel looks like another home run. You can say that it’s only Batman, Superman, and Watchmen but when you have success with them it improves your confidence to try other heroes.

Rushed is a word that has yet to be said in the news of Episode 7 and yet it is used all the time in news on Justice League. Sure 3 years is a long time but why hasn’t that been tossed around with Episode 7 yet? They will either need to reintroduce characters or introduce new characters. Justice League has characters that are well known. Hell we don’t know if Han and Luke are back but we know Batman and Superman will be in Justice League and yet Justice League is the one being called rushed. We don’t even know if a script has either been written, being written, or is written for Episode 7. We know a script is prepared for the Justice League movie by Will Beall and yet Justice League is the one being rushed.

These are just my thoughts and feelings on the reveal on Episode 7. I just don’t get why people on this site are jumping on the Star Wars bandwagon because Episode 7 is revealed when Justice League gets crapped on for reasons one could use for Episode 7. What are your thoughts and feelings? Do you agree with what I’m saying or disagree? Comment below. Peace.

I think the problem is we don't know enough about the Justice League film, we don't know if Warner Bros will be able to balance out the characters and correctly characterise them without straying too far from the source material.
Until we know, people will either jump to conclusions or have strong views

THE AVENGERS movie was actually planned in 2005, three years before the release of IRON MAN, the first movie if the MCU.

I fail to get this article. A Star Wars Universe like Avengers is already established. If you bring new characters to it they'll serve the storyline and the rich history that series already have made. Some examples being Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pirates Trilogy and few others.
Othe the other hand WB is just making a Justice League movie for the sake of it. They once did Green Lantern and made a mess out of it. How will the establish 7 characters in 2.5 hour timeframe makes me wonder. Even Justice League Animated Series took Batman TAS and Superman TAS to establish every character before making a team up.

We are the fans and we know every what every studio is capable of. Disney like Marvel makes movies for people and not for the Sake of Box Office. I still believe that if Disney made Harry Potter it would be more awesome than what WB did.

The Justice League project has been in development hell for years, folks aren't interested in following that rollercoaster ride. Whereas Star Wars has gotten a serious push, Disney spent nearly $4B on it! And of course, I endorses the other comments above.

Love your articles, bro. But the comparison here's flawed

1) SW7 will be the continuation of an established franchise. JL hopes to springboard several new ones. SW7 is working with a set-up that has already worked, and is beloved. JL is something that will be tested for the first time, and will (apparently) be the first appearance of several superheroes on the big screen. It needs to get a lot right, and people are skeptical of the 'fast-track' approach.

2) The Star Trek comparison doesn't work. Avengers = 3rd highest grossing film of all time. Warner Bros initially had the idea but shelved it due to lack of faith. Now that they see that superhero teamups work, they're finally putting out JL. It isn't so much competition as it is trying to make some money off a craze that's in right now (and apparently works). Which many (including me) suspect is the reason behind fast-tracking the film's production and releasing it the same year as Avengers 2. In SW' case, we fans might think so, but from a financial standpoint, Star Trek's never been a real competitor to SW. SW is the 3rd highest grossing franchise (7 films w/animated), Star Trek is 23rd highest grossing franchise (11 films). SW needs not compete, or prove anything. They are doing this simply because they can, and we don't have a problem with it.

3) SW had a main hero, everyone else was supporting. With Han Solo, and Leia being the primary supporting characters. In Justice League, I don't think we really want to see Flash as if he's DC's R2D2. No, the thing about JL is that everyone is a Luke. Or at least, Han Solo or Leia. And while in SW, it was easy to introduce characters. For example, Leia is "a princess that's a leader in the rebellion against the evil empire". That's all, from there, the important stuff with her character is in the present. In JL, who is Flash? What are his powers? Why does he have those powers? Why does he dress like that? Why is he being made a part of JL? and on and on and on. And that's just one character.

4) Disney has Pirates of the Caribbean as a successful franchise. I don't know if you're a fan of it. I'm not really in particular. But it'd be foolish to deny that it's a massively successful one. In fact, financially speaking, take any three films in the franchise (not even accounting for inflation -Pirates are older overall) and compare them to Nolan's Bat-trilogy, and the Pirates films have made more money in total. And you mentioned the first 2 Superman films and the first two Batman films. But what about the last two Superman films and the last two Batman films? and Supergirl? and Green Lantern? and that horrendous Wonder Woman pilot that they produced? Not saying that Disney's definitely better at franchises (eg. failed w/John Carter), just saying that Disney's had it's successes too, and Warner Bros' has had it's failures too.

5) Yeah, this I agree with you, I don't think the film is being 'rushed'. I used the words 'fast-tracked' up there for the sake of simplicity, but really what I mean to express is: They seem to be making this film without enough deliberation. It's like 'OhAvengersWasASuccess?OkMakeAScript.ScriptDone.Let'sShoot.' In Star Wars' case we just had confirmation that George Lucas already has a treatment for all three films. So there's already something concrete to work with. Just the fact that they don't seem to be taking their time with this, and have already announced a release date (same year as Avengers 2? Hoping to profit off the hype?) just seems like it's begging for skepticism about their sincerity about this project. And in comparison to SW7, again, I'd like to bring up the fact that SW7 is a sequel, but JL is a first. SW7 will have a lot to work with (and I am also talking about the expanded universe), where they already know what has worked, and what hasn't. And there's the Lucas treatments too. Whereas Justice League is starting from scratch. Most successful superhero franchises took years before finalizing just the approach of the film: tone as dark/light, dramatic/comedic, the level of faithfulness to the comics, which storyline to adapt, which characters to focus upon etc etc. It's just, JL should be taking a lot more time than it is.

CorndogBurglar - 10/30/2012, 9:54 PM
The reason is simple. Star Wars is a legendary franchise. Every Star Wars fan will go see a new SW movie just hoping and praying it will be good.

JL gets hate for two major reasons. One is that people have lost faith in WB amd their comic movies. Aside from Batman, they havent done anything worthwhile. They royally screwed up two of their biggest characters on film. Superman Returns. And they tried to step out of the Batman and Superman box with Green Lantern and it was utter shit. Also, many people think WB is just doing a JL movie because Avengers was so successful, which is true. There has been talk of a JL movie for the past 20 years, but nothing ever comes of it, then Avengers does what it did and now all of a sudden a JL movoe is finally happening? Thats not a coincidence. It just looks like a cheap money grab and could quite possibly come off as an Avengers ripoff.

Second, this site is full of ignorant, one sided Marvel fans that will crap on anything DC. You know that, Levitikuz. :)

Personally, i cant wait for both.

As for Star Wars, it was always intended to be 9 parts. A lot happens after Return of the Jedi. Luke dabbles with the dark side and learns to control it to an extent. Chewie dies. Luke and Leia have twins who are ridiculously powerful with the force. There Imperial loyalist factions who are basically the galaxy's rebellion after the fall of the empire.

There are tons of thinga they can do with episodes 7-9. The only thing is that they will have to replace all the old actors, which could be good or bad.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 10/30/2012, 10:06 PM
They wont do starkiller because that happens between episodes 3 and 4, making it another prequel. It will take place after Jedi. Otherwise it wouldnt be called episode 7.

Personally, if they want to do a new SW film, they should do Knights of the Old Republic. That saga takes place 3,000 years before episode 1. The sith are very prevalent back then, but the Force itself is more pure and balanced, so the people of that time period could do things that not even Luke and Yoda could imagine.

That would have been the way to go.

Plus the Darth Revan storyline from games was epic.

GuardianDevil - 10/30/2012, 10:26 PM
you raise a good point..
i think a few reasons for it are as follows

1. Justice League has been rumored since 2008, and fans have been watching and waiting ever since, whereas the idea of SW 7 completely shocked everyone..

2. Star Wars already has a massively successful film franchise, whereas JLA hasnt even scratched the surface of films yet..

3. Yes, haters are gonna hate.... so sad.

As for the storyline i think the tales of Ben Skywalker, Jacen and Jaina Solo would make sense chronologically, and their parent's actors are old anyway...

So far, the two Star Wars trilogies have been focused on the Skywalker family. Episodes 1-3 were about Anakin's fall to the dark side. Episodes 4-6 were his son, Luke, finally bringing balance to the Force and the universe. (Although one could argue that Anakin was still the chosen one because he is the one that killed Palpatine and saved the universe. If he didnt do that, then Luke would have died and the Empire would rule the galaxy, but thats beside the point.)

Point is, 7-9 will continue the Skywalker story. It would be dumb to continie the episodes and not continue it, especially knowing that Leia is a Skywalker and has two kids with Solo who are strong in the force.

Again, Levitikuz, i dont know how much of a SW fan you are, but its kind of obvious where it will go. At least the basis of it.

Justice League is just rushed, WB has not shown they can give us anything good outside of Batman and occasionally superman. It's not so much hate as it is disappoint and lack of faith in WB/DC.

Disney has proved that when they bought out Marvel things will go well and they did. Marvel movies have a big fanbase, DC/WB only has Batman. Star Wars and Disney just seems like the right choice.

I never really got into Star Wars. The originals bored me and the prequels were okay. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be The Phantom Menace. Again, I don't like Star Wars and I could care less. Personally, they'll have to make this one REALLY good if they want my attention. Paramount did good for Star Trek, I'm not a trekkie but I did like the J.J Abrams film.

Let the hating begin.

Coldblood6 - 10/31/2012, 5:45 AM
Wow, Levitikuz, you really, really need to move on from this. There's more to life than writing Justice League / DC apologist editorials.

First off, of course a new STAR WARS movie is getting more hype than a justice league movie!!! STAR WARS is an established, mega-popular, beloved, 'changed-the-face-of-cinema', franchise. Justice league is an unknown quantity.

This is getting love because huge numbers of the fanbase realised that for STAR WARS to grow and develope it needed to move away from George Lucas, and that is EXACTLY what is happening. In contrast WB has been less than successful with their dc properties outside of Batman and the fanbase has minmal faith that they can pull this off. Many feel that for DC to succeed cinematically they need their own studio which is free from the control of WB. Thus what is happening with the justice league is the exact opposite of what is happening with STAR WARS.

Next the hate directed towards the justice league movie comes from the perception among the CBM fanbase that this project is purely a knee jerk reasction to the success of THE AVENGERS, instead of being a labour of love, as is the MCU. Whether real or not is irrelevant; the perception is all that matters. Again understand well that the MCU is a labour of love. Oh and please quit it with the "this is a response to STAR TREK" baloney. Utter nonsense and pure conjecture with nothing to back it up.
Sabconth
Sabconth - 10/31/2012, 8:06 AM
C'mon Levitikuz, you know why.

Outside of Nolan, DC haven't made a single decent CBM in almost a decade.

Justice League screams of desperation and catch up, there is so much to worry about if they screw things up.

Star Wars on the other hand will finally be handled by someone who isn't George Lucas. That alone makes the project interesting.

Most people had already given up on the franchise anyway, so even if the new film is terrible, no one will be too anguished.

and we fans are afraid that it is gonna fail epicly (if that's a word) cuz seriously in the last idk....12 YEARS WB hasn't given us much of any good movies outside of Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy and Watchmen, but honestly Green Lantern, Jonah Hex, Superman Returns etc. Those were terrible films, so im not hating im just sayin that we are afraid of yet another Warner Bros FAIL!
