Ava DuVernay made history by becoming the first woman of colour to helm a $100+ million live-action blockbuster with Disney's A Wrinkle In Time and it appears as if that movie has finally led the filmmaker to the world of superheroes. However, it's probably not the ones you expected! While she's been linked to a number of Marvel characters in recent years, DuVernay will, in fact, take charge of The New Gods for Warner Bros., a DC Comics adaptation based on the very popular Jack Kirby property.
Apparently, the studio is already looking to find a screenwriter to work with closely with her to craft the story and it's likely going to be another $100+ million movie. It was actually late last year that she told a fan on social media that her favourite superhero is Big Barda, so perhaps this has been in the works for a while now. Either way, she's clearly a fan of this colourful world and seems like a good fit.
Interestingly, it's said that The New Gods won't be tied to any of the other DC Films Universe movies so chances are we won't see Superman and Orion hanging out any time soon and if Darkseid does show up, it will be a different version than the one Steppenwolf was working for in Justice League. Despite being standalone in nature, though, a property like this definitely has a massive amount of potential.
