JUSTICE LEAGUE: New Details About Joss Whedon's Reshoots Revealed; Studio Exec Calls His Cut "A Piece Of Sh*t"

We've heard a lot of conflicting reports about how Joss Whedon came to be involved with Justice League, and in a heartbreaking account at Vanity Fair, Zack Snyder has explained how the death of his daughter, Autumn, led to him walking away from the movie.

In the same piece, it's revealed that Geoff Johns, who had been developing a Batgirl movie with Whedon, was the driving force for enlisting The Avengers director to pen those initial reshoots. Snyder was on board at first, admitting: "I thought maybe he could write some cool scenes. I thought that would be fun." However, as time passed, Warner Bros. started to give Whedon more power.

Suddenly, he wasn't just offering script pages and advice during the reshoots, but stepping behind the camera himself. Snyder had only one conversation with Whedon, and walked away from Justice League upon realising that this was not a fight he wanted in the wake of his daughter's tragic death.

Even when Snyder was shooting the movie the first time around, then Warner Bros. Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara tasked Johns and producer Jon Berg with being on set every day to keep an eye on things. Berg tells the site that it was his job to "mediate between a creator whose vision is instinctually dark and a studio that perceived, rightly or wrong, that the fans wanted something lighter."

Again, Snyder wasn't overly bothered by them being there to "babysit."

"It didn’t bother me too much because they weren’t that threatening. I just felt the ideas they did have, where they were trying to inject humor and stuff like that, it wasn’t anything that was too outrageous."

Snyder believes around 3/4 of Justice League ended up being rewritten, an idea Warner Bros. clearly felt was a good idea. However, one anonymous studio executive admits that they were all left reeling by what Whedon delivered.

"When we got to see what Joss actually did, it was stupefying. "The robber on the rooftop—so goofy and awful. The Russian family—so useless and pointless. Everyone knew it. It was so awkward because nobody wanted to admit what a piece of shit it was."

Ouch.

Now, Zack Snyder's Justice League will finally be released on HBO Max, while Whedon is coming under the spotlight for inappropriate behaviour on both the set of this movie and other projects.

Euh-RNVe-Wg-AMAKWI123332133233311a33331333

Gina Carano was fired by Lucasfilm after a series of controversial social media posts, and will no longer play Cara Dune in The Mandalorian as a result.

For those of you hoping the character's story might continue, it seems Disney is looking to move on from her, as it was revealed this week that, "A Lucasfilm source says that the Cara Dune role on The Mandalorian is not expected to be recast."

Still, her disappearance will need to be addressed somehow, so we're banking on her being killed off.

9. The Next Transformers Movie May Be Beast Alliance

Euh-RNVe-Wg-AMAKWI123332133233311a33331333

Another live-action movie is currently in the works at Paramount Pictures, with Creed 2 helmer Steven Caple Jr. in the director's chair. Shooting is expected to begin later this year, and we learned this week that the project currently has the working title of Transformers: Beast Alliance

It's said to take place in the same timeline as Bumblebee, with a 1990s setting. It's noted that Beast Alliance will "have the flavor of a heist film that will span from Brooklyn to South America."

Head over to our original post for details on this movie's possible leads.

7. Cruella = Disney's Joker?

Euh-RNVe-Wg-AMAKWI123332133233311a33331333

Our first proper look at Cruella was released this week, and it looks like Emma Stone is having a blast as the classic 101 Dalmatians villain. Fans have since started comparing her to classic DC Comics villain The Joker, and it honestly looks like it might be a PG-13 version of 2019's Joker!

It's also worth noting that a release date has now been set for May 28th...with no clarification on whether Cruella will debut in theaters, on Disney+, or both. We'll see on that front.

6. Rian Johnson's Star Wars Trilogy Is Still Happening

Euh-RNVe-Wg-AMAKWI123332133233311a33331333

The only confirmed Star Wars films currently heading our way are Wonder Woman 1984 helmer Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron, and an untitled adventure from Taika Waititi, which he's expected to begin working on once he's finished shooting Thor: Love and Thunder for Marvel.

However, it was revealed this week that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson remains hard at work on his trilogy, and while it sounds like it's a way off, not everyone was happy to hear this!

Find more details on Lucasfilm's for this new Star Wars trilogy in our recent post.

5. Paul Bettany Teases A Big WandaVision Cameo

Euh-RNVe-Wg-AMAKWI123332133233311a333313332

Both Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen have teased a huge WandaVision cameo, with the latter comparing it to Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian. It's fair to say most of us assumed it was Evan Peters as Pietro, but in a new interview, Bettany has confirmed that's not who they were talking about.

He also indicated that it isn't Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, and suggested it's not an actor he's appeared on screen with before, but is someone he's "longed to work with all my life."

4. HBO Max Is Rebooting Constantine

Euh-RNVe-Wg-AMAKWI123332133233311a33331333233

We know J.J. Abrams is working on a Justice League Dark reboot for HBO Max, but it seems that big plans are also in place for John Constantine. British novelist Guy Bolton is writing the pilot, and is expected to serve as head writer for a much darker take on the character than we've previously seen.

Interestingly, a diverse lead is being sought to take on the role, so it remains to be seen whether this Constantine will be British (Keanu Reeves' take, for example, had an American accent).

It's exciting news which you can read more about by clicking here.

3. "Finish Him!" In The New Mortal Kombat Trailer

Euh-RNVe-Wg-AMAKWI123332133233311a3333133323

Well, it's fair to say this looks way better than any of us anticipated!

As the posters indicated, remaining faithful to the games was a clear priority for the team behind this one, and it definitely has the feel of a big budget action blockbuster. For fans of the video games, there's plenty here to love, with heaps of brutal violence, and some fun tongue-in-cheek nods to the franchise's rich history. Sub-Zero, in particular, looks to be a highlight as the movie's villain.

2. The Flash Movie Casts Supergirl

Euh-RNVe-Wg-AMAKWI123332133233311a333313332

More than 400 actresses secretly auditioned for the role of Supergirl in The Flash movie, but it's Boston-born Colombian actress Sasha Calle (The Young and the Restless) who landed the gig.

This marks the first time a Latina actress has played the Girl of Steel, and points to Andy Muschietti's take on the Scarlet Speedster being an even bigger deal than we initially realised.

1. Zack Snyder's Justice League Trailer

Euh-RNVe-Wg-AMAKWI123332133233311a33331333

Last Sunday, HBO Max shared the first trailer for Zack Snyder's Justice League and, make no mistake about it, this movie is going to be a very, very different beast. The visuals here are simply out of this world, while the action is clearly going to be on a whole other level to 2017's mostly forgotten theatrical cut.

Of course, the biggest talking point is Jared Leto's surprise appearance at the end of the sneak peek as The Joker. His meeting with Batman promises to be unmissable, and this was a great tease.

You can watch this trailer for Zack Snyder's Justice League right here.

The opening robber on the rooftop was AWFUL, i literally thought it was a joke or something for the first minute or two.

@ReverseFlasher - as soon as I watched that scene opening night, I remember thinking oh no... this is going to be bad.

Little did I know that I was still underestimating how bad it could be til the “something is definitely bleeding” line. Yikes.

@ReverseFlasher - Not defending Whedon, but if Whedon's reshoots were a piece of shit...what does that mean for Snyder's cut? Becuz if Snyder's Cut was trash and they hired another director to fix it and the overall product is still trash......that can only mean Snyder's Cut is going to be worst or am I missing something?
madhombre
madhombre - 2/22/2021, 11:03 AM
@mastakilla39 - Yes.
You are missing that WB Executives panicking after seeing the Snyder Cut as “too dark” and they just wanted to add comedy so they can get MCU type $$$.
Chasekeane
Chasekeane - 2/22/2021, 11:04 AM
@mastakilla39 - Hmm i think its more like a baker started mixing a cake, but left before it was finished because of a family tragedy, so they got another baker to come in and randomly add some ingredients before putting it in the oven. The cake was a disaster. Now the first baker might have made a great cake, but the cake he made before wasn't that good, and maybe some of his testers weren't up to snuff.
Vanillain
Vanillain - 2/22/2021, 11:21 AM
@Chasekeane - The closest food analogy I can think of is:

Snyder baked a cake in Nailed It. Then his cake was used in Chopped as Whedon's basket ingredient. Neither one of them won $10,000.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 2/22/2021, 11:33 AM
@madhombre - I mean this new cut is "Rated R" so that's a huge problem already. Even if was hard pg-13 that's extreme knowing the "family potential" superhero films are made for.

@Chasekeane - To my knowledge zack snyder finished a workprint of the film that was 4 hrs long. It was just missing cgi, dialogue reshoots, and music. Besides that it was mostly done. So its more like he finished a cake just didn't have time to put on the frosting. So if a bunch of millionaire producers said the cake already tasted weird...the frostings wouldn't save it either way. But everyone does have different taste buds so....

@Vanillain - I'm skeptical he "nailed it" because nobody was onboard to save this film. Only reason this version came out is At&T needed new content for HBO Max and Covid hit. Since they couldn't shoot anything "new" it was more cost efficient to finish this film rather than spending shooting something new with that budget. If Covid never hit this film would've been buried for 20 - 30 yrs like Donnor's Superman 2 or Scott's Blade Runner.
tylerzero
tylerzero - 2/22/2021, 11:39 AM
@ReverseFlasher - That scene was a complete waste of Holt McCallany's talent.
Vanillain
Vanillain - 2/22/2021, 11:45 AM
@mastakilla39 - The show Nailed It, barely (if ever) have any contestants actually nail it. It's a show where the entertainment is on the contestants' hilarious and horrendous butchery of baked goods.
Itwasme
Itwasme - 2/22/2021, 12:22 PM
@mastakilla39 - the reports around Snyder's initial cut were that it was "unwatchable." Sobieski, if those are to be believed the Whedon cut could still be better when called a POS.
BornToLose
BornToLose - 2/22/2021, 10:35 AM
Zero surprise here. Hate Snyder all you want but WB pretty much made the worst business decisions when it came to JL. They should have just let Snyder finish his film and then transition the would be franchise to another creative if needed.
inkniron
inkniron - 2/22/2021, 10:39 AM
@BornToLose - Conversely, they should have fired him after BvS and given someone else the opportunity to try and salvage the travesty before they wasted a bloated budget on his "vision" of JL.
BornToLose
BornToLose - 2/22/2021, 10:43 AM
@inkniron - a few things:

1) I disagree obviously because I like BvS. It’s not perfect but I enjoyed it quite a lot

2) JL was already shooting by the time BvS came out

3) What WB should have done is make sure they’re good with green lighting JL before BvS came out. Instead they cut out a pretty crucial 30 minutes from BvS and tried to “course-correct” JL mid production.

It’s laughable that this is a major studio fumbling this hard
inkniron
inkniron - 2/22/2021, 10:51 AM
@BornToLose - No, it didn't start filming until April. pre production had started, but they weren't so far down that rabbit hole that they could have stopped the madness after the week 2 drop in tickets.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. 3hr movies released in theaters are rare air, gross restrictive and usually given when earned. Snyder's never put anything out to instill that kind of trust. The overstuffed 3hrs is on him, not the studio.
BornToLose
BornToLose - 2/22/2021, 11:06 AM
@inkniron - the machine was already running and it would have been a huge overhaul to stop the film. I do agree that WB should have halted it if they were gonna cut Snyder loose.

Also, laugh all you want but Snyder isn’t thinking about how stuffed a 3 hour film is - he’s simply making the film he wants. WB saw the script, they were aware of the length, it’s their fault for green lighting it in the first place.
Blergh
Blergh - 2/22/2021, 11:29 AM
@BornToLose - They all are to blame, obviously.
And pretending that one party isn't as much or at all to blame is lying to yourself.

Snyder made a movie WB deemed not good enough to fully commit to.
WB greenlit a movie that should have raised warning flags.
Whedon finished a movie that was terrible.

So what's the gist? Too many cooks during production, not enough cooks during pre-production.

Truth be told it's on all of them.
Goldboink
Goldboink - 2/22/2021, 12:54 PM

Yea, it's on the studio and not really Snyder. They hired him, they greenlit all the scripts and then changed thier mind mid stream.

It was Jossy Whedon all along
philinterrupted
philinterrupted - 2/22/2021, 10:47 AM
@Battabing - because now that Snyder gets to do his version, and let’s be clear, this isn’t what his version was going to be originally, he gets to pretend things went differently so he looks like the victim in all this.
RageDriver2401
RageDriver2401 - 2/22/2021, 10:49 AM

Blergh
Blergh - 2/22/2021, 11:17 AM
@Battabing - because now they have to shift the blame to Whedon so the Snyder Cut makes money. Easy to paint a man that already is branded a monster the sole villain in your story while the truth, probably, is that they all messed up.

Snyder who wrote a bad movie, WB who greenlit it and Whedon who finished it.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 2/22/2021, 11:44 AM
@Battabing - The story keeps changing because of marketing....next thing you know the movie is trash then AT&T is probably going to start releasing crap about Zack & Deborah Snyder's troubled production to blame them. Or maybe it comes out amazing and AT&T revives the Snyderverse...

Remember, History only favors the winners.

BlindAl9 - 2/22/2021, 12:05 PM
