For reasons which aren't entirely clear, Warner Bros. decided to completely cut Darkseid from the theatrical version of Justice League. Removing the villain certainly helped simplify the story, while it likely also meant that Ava DuVernay would be free to deliver her own take on the iconic bad guy in The New Gods with no baggage from other stories.
In Zack Snyder's Justice League, the spotlight will be put on Darkseid in a big way, and that means we're finally going to see Ray Porter's take on the iconic character for ourselves.
While it's likely the four-part HBO Max event is a one-off, when the actor was recently asked by Geek House Show whether he would be open to playing Darkseid again - in a sequel or another DC Extended Universe project - he understandably expressed some enthusiasm to make that happen.
"I hope so. I would like that," Porter responded. "I would love to see that, and obviously I would hope that whoever does that will have me along for the ride. Yeah, I would love to see a continuation of it. And honestly, I personally would love to see a continuation of Zack's story. So yes, I really hope so. That would be great. I've not heard anything about it, but you know. Hope."
If Zack Snyder's Justice League is a massive hit for HBO Max, then it's entirely possible that some sort of continuation could become a reality. Ultimately, it will depend on how much Warner Bros. wants to invest in the filmmaker, and whether they would prefer an A-List star for that eventual New Gods project.
Like Porter, it seems we'll have to wait and see for now.
