Star Wars Celebration is now underway in Tokyo, Japan, with Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling taking the stage to reveal some official details about their mysterious Star Wars movie.

The film is titled Star Wars: Starfighter, and will be a standalone adventure set a few years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. A release date of May 28, 2027 was also announced.

“The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,” said Gosling from the stage. “It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”

“This is a standalone. It’s not a prequel, not sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet,” added Levy.

That's about all that was disclosed during the event, but we do have a little more to go on thanks to scooper Daniel Richtman.

Apparently, the movie will follow a Jedi (played by Ryan Gosling) who decides to train his 15-year-old nephew as his Padawan. "The pair embark on some kind of mission while being pursued by two villains — one male, one female. The Padawan’s mother also plays an important role in the story, and there’s another major female character as well.".

The movie will reportedly "have a significantly smaller budget" than the previous Disney-era films, and is described as "a more contained" story.

Levy has been developing the script with Jonathan Tropper (This Is Where I Leave You, The Adam Project) since 2022, and is also set to produce via 21 Laps, along with Lucasfilm president (though for how much longer) Kathleen Kennedy.

Following the massive success of Deadpool and Wolverine, Levy is reportedly viewed by Disney as "a must-have, must-keep" director, so there's a good chance he will have a significant amount of creative control over the movie.

"I'll say that the experience of crafting this story has forced me to think about that question," Levy said last year when asked what he hopes to bring to the table with his trip to the Galaxy Far, Far Away. "Because there's only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it's really forced me - because I don't want to do a Star Wars movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie."

"I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me, both in tone and characters, so I think that there is certainly the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves. And the way that that can make us powerful, those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfilment, that's Star Wars to me."

Lucasfilm also has Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's Rey-focused movie, James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi (probably not the official title), and Dave Filoni's "Mandoverse" crossover event in the works.

@epc1122 -

What are your least favorite Disney Star Wars movies and shows?

What are your least favorite Disney movies and shows of the 2020s?

What are your least favorite MCU movies and shows of the 2020s?

@MakeAmericaGrea - for Star Wars I found attack of the clones boring and when I first saw phantom menace it was a disappointment. To be honest, a lot of Star Wars I feel could be edited down to one 4 or five hour epic. The draw of the series for me is the story of a skin to Vader and Luke trying to bring him back. Episodes 7-9 was a disappointment but I don’t think it was as bad as people make it out to be. I thought rise of skywalker should have been different. Would have liked more of a plausible reason to bring back Palpatine. For 2020 Disney movies, I found encanto and frozen 2 boring and most Disney movies boring but understand that I’m not really the demographic being a 43 year old male. In my opinion Disney movies are really for kids so when I take my niece and nephew I just hope they enjoy it. My oldest niece is a bit older so she’s growing out of Disney. Lastly, for Marvel, most of what’s come out post endgame has been I’ve found boring. I understand that I’m not in the majority here, but I enjoyed Thor 4 but I liked the character and I liked the ending of him raising a kid. I also liked getting closure on the story of Jane even though she can still come back. I didn’t really like Wakanda forever but not because they changed black panther to a woman or namor’s change in story or look, I just found the movie boring and cliche. Most of the marvel shows I’ve found boring. Inwas pretty disappointed with secret invasion and I was somewhat looking forward to it but I thought peacemaker actually did that story better lol. I sometimes wonder if my viewing habits have changed but then I see the Superman trailer and I still get pumped. I’ve always been more of a Superman/dc fan. I don’t just follow Disney/marvel blindly but do understand that some people love it and I’m not going to bash their opinion. I’m also going to see trailers and movies and make my own opinion. Just saw Snow White with my nephew and mom and it was what I expected. It was not made for me but at the same time it wasn’t the worst movie or worst adaptation I’ve seen. But again, that’s just my opinion.

@MakeAmericaGrea - I think someone can express their opinion without being rude or demeaning and having an “us vs them” mentality. Just because someone else likes something that I don’t, that’s fine. These movies and shows is just meant for entertainment. If it doesn’t entertain, change the station and move on. It doesn’t have to be a conspiracy.

@UncleHarm1 - nope never met him and I I must be apart of the Marxist Illuminati because we definitely don’t agree on most topics lol 😂 on a side note, are you looking forward to this Star Wars project?
UncleHarm1
UncleHarm1 - 4/18/2025, 12:59 AM
@epc1122 - As a fellow illuminati member I look forward to profiting somehow from our grand inclusivity conspiracy.

Aside from that I think Shawn Levy is a very talented comedic director who makes movies with little to no plot. Night at the Museum movies are my guilty pleasure but I wouldn't exactly say this dude needs to make a Star War lol

That said I don't judge things until I experience them for myself, I hope it's great!

UncleHarm1 - 4/18/2025, 1:01 AM
@epc1122 - I just read your other comment, funny you should say that because I did in fact edit Star Wars down to a bunch of shorter movies for re-watching in the background while I do other things
epc1122
epc1122 - 4/18/2025, 1:03 AM
@UncleHarm1 - I for the most part enjoyed Deadpool and Wolverine as well as the Adam project. Still want to see free guy. Don’t see an Oscar winner anytime soon but looking forward to a fun, entertaining movie which is what I think the Star Wars movie should be which is entertaining.
epc1122
epc1122 - 4/18/2025, 1:07 AM
@UncleHarm1 - that’s impressive. Awhile ago on YouTube I’ve seen some edits where it’s like an hour or two of anakins turn to the dark side and then his redemption. It’s been awhile so I’m not sure I’d they’ve included episodes 7-9 and some of the shows. I liked obi wan the show but thought that could have been edited as well. That’s the thing with me i guess, especially with marvel, there are moments I like/love but the overall product I’ve found boring.
UncleHarm1
UncleHarm1 - 4/18/2025, 1:11 AM
@epc1122 - Free Guy was funny but forgettable to me. I did like D&W a lot, especially how the cameos were worked into the story rather than just fan service. Also they gave Wolverine a pretty good arc and Jackman is fantastic
epc1122
epc1122 - 4/18/2025, 1:16 AM
@UncleHarm1 - agree with pretty much everything you wrote. I will say that i was hoping cyclops would be in it in his 90s X-men uniform. Now that he’s confirmed for avengers, I’m hoping there’s another chance. But I did for the most part enjoy d and w and was happy to see jackman again.

UncleHarm1 - 4/18/2025, 1:19 AM
@epc1122 - I'm kinda obsessed lol it went from hobby to addiction. I made a movie out of the Obiwan show that's a little over 2 hrs, still think I can cut more. I've edited just about every Marvel movie going back to Blade and Ghost Rider....

I've showed my Star Wars edits to a few people and it's fascinating how the things some people love about them are the same thing others will hate. Nobody is more selective than SW fans
UncleHarm1
UncleHarm1 - 4/18/2025, 1:24 AM
@epc1122 - 90's Cyclops is one of those huge missed opportunities. I remember being so disappointed as a kid that Nightcrawler didn't have his rad costume with the pointy shoulders too

epc1122 - 4/18/2025, 1:28 AM
@UncleHarm1 - art can def become an obsession. Been working on this years yearbook for my class and I kept updating it constantly. Want it perfect for the families but decided it’s done. I think it’s still good but already see a couple of things I should have changed before getting it printed. For Star Wars, I like the light saber battles and anakin turning to darth vader and his interactions with palpatine, obi wan and Luke. Then in episodes 7-9, I like the Ben scenes and him with Rey. I’ve seen some fan edits of the ending that I think work better where you see the ghosts instead of just hearing their voices that I think works better.
epc1122
epc1122 - 4/18/2025, 1:32 AM
@UncleHarm1 - here’s hoping we at least get a glimpse of it in Avengers. I think avengers will be the final swan song to the foxverse and then the X-men will be officially rebooted.
UncleHarm1
UncleHarm1 - 4/18/2025, 1:37 AM
@epc1122 - That's cool, I always wanted to be part of the yearbook committee lol now I basically do that for a living but with dogs. And don't even get me started on perfectionism.....

I cut a lot of the Ben and Rey scenes, that's one of the controversial edits I made. My old roommate hated that I left out their psychic conversations. I really liked where they were going with Ben's redemption arc but I feel like they dropped the ball by making him too nice after all the murders he did. So I tried to make him less sympathetic in my version, he kills Leia himself and doesn't come back after Rey stabs him. Also cut Palpatine even though I loved seeing him ham it up in ep. 9
epc1122
epc1122 - 4/18/2025, 1:43 AM
@UncleHarm1 - well there’s no committee, just a committee of one. Start to finish, I will say this year think is coming out the best but this is the third year of doing it. Would you change anything after you made the edits? Second guess yourself? It’s pretty cool that you make the edits which I’m sure is time consuming and not easy. Fan edits can def be more fun to watch than the real final product. Gets to the point better and sometimes tells a more coherent story.

@epc1122 -

You guys are being disingenuous.

I've never said Illuminati here until just now.

What I say about liberal filmmakers social engineering and annoying conservatives is true, and most of us know that, and some liberals celebrate it, and some liberals know it's true but deny it.

@MakeAmericaGrea - do you even know what you’re complaining about now? Lol 😂
UncleHarm1
UncleHarm1 - 4/18/2025, 2:10 AM
@epc1122 - Committee of one makes it sound so badass lol. Combining eps. 7-9 into one movie was my third editing project I ever attempted, so mostly technical stuff. I've since learned some basic VFX so someday I want to add a ghost of Leia during the final fight between Rey and Ben. The part where they fight on the death star ruins is my finale, so having Leia distract him and cause his death makes a nice dark little twist ending. They already have her voice whispering to him before he gets stabbed, so it's just a matter of putting in an image of her.

I have noticed some continuity errors in my edits over the years, like Chewbacca randomly getting a broken arm between scenes lol
UncleHarm1
UncleHarm1 - 4/18/2025, 2:11 AM
@MakeAmericaGrea - Diversity is not a conspiracy you goof it's just progress. Now begone.
epc1122
epc1122 - 4/18/2025, 2:21 AM
@UncleHarm1 - thanks. I do the yearbook for m the families. The students I work with aren’t the easiest but I generally love my job and want them to remember the happy times. My favorite scene from 7-9 is when snoke dies and Ben and Rey fight together. The music in that scene, to me is top notch. So how long are your movies? I’ve always thought all 9 movies can prob go down to about 4 hours but I would want to include the scenes of Vader and obi wan from the recent show to
Be included. Also from Ashoka season 1 and the like scene scene from the mandelorian.
epc1122
epc1122 - 4/18/2025, 2:21 AM
@epc1122 - Luke scene from the mandelorian.
UncleHarm1
UncleHarm1 - 4/18/2025, 2:35 AM
@epc1122 - That whole part is so good. That's what I mean, Ben wants to help Rey but his methods are so crazy. He's an interesting character.

I've got the prequels down to less than 2hrs, but that includes some footage from other fan films as well as an edited version of the flashback sequence from Ashoka. I can't bring myself to edit the original trilogy besides shortening the Ewok stuff a bit. My sequel trilogy is about 2hrs as well.

It would be a fun challenge to make one or two movies out of the whole franchise, I might have to try that. I have made edits of Mando as well but I mostly cut out jokes and trimmed each season into a movie. I used a deepfake I found on youtube for the Luke scene lol
epc1122
epc1122 - 4/18/2025, 2:43 AM
@UncleHarm1 - have you posted them on YouTube or something? I definitely find aspects to Star Wars really interesting but there’s a lot I can do without 👍.
UncleHarm1
UncleHarm1 - 4/18/2025, 11:45 AM
@epc1122 - My wife keeps telling me to post them somewhere, I really should. Especially the weirder ones, like I put Mark Ruffalo in the Norton Hulk movie using footage from Eternal Sunshine. Maybe I can put em on google drive
UncleHarm1
UncleHarm1 - 4/18/2025, 11:46 AM
@epc1122 - I appreciate your interest btw I don't get to talk about this much lol
epc1122
epc1122 - 4/18/2025, 12:02 PM
@UncleHarm1 - it’s a shame they can’t redo the Norton movie with ruffalo in it to keep with consistency. I liked nortons hulk but ruffalo really is Marvel universes definitive hulk. At least until there’s some sort of reboot.
