INFINITY WAR Versus ENDGAME: Which One Is The Superior AVENGERS Film? Spoilers

Avengers: Infinity War wasn't just a movie, it was an event. The same can be said for Avengers: Endgame, if not, even more so. So out of these two Avengers movies, which one is the best? Take a look...

The wait is finally over. Avengers: Endgame is out in theaters, and fans are barging through those doors for such a cinematic treat. However, let's not forget how hyped we were for Avengers: Infinity War last year. That was another case of epic proportions on a movie screen. Well, now that (hopefully) you've seen both, it only makes sense to compare these gargantuan films. Let's begin...

The Plot

Did Infinity War even have a plot? It just felt like an energy shot of non-stop action. Well, brushing past the action scenes, I really enjoyed the plot and story of Infinity War. Simply put, it was about Thanos trying to collect all of the Infinity Stones. With his quest on the horizon, the former Avengers have to shake off some rust to stop Thanos. That's basically it, and it works without a doubt. Our favorite heroes against an intergalactic warlord, all in a race against time to make sure these precious stones are out of his hands.

Too bad they don't win. We all know the rest. Thanos gets everything he wants, snaps his fingers, and everyone literally bites the dust. Such a unique ending, because we usually don't see the heroes lose. Definitely not on a huge scale like this anyway.

Now going to Endgame, it's all about getting the band back together. Time travel ensues so things can be changed for the better, and a 2014 version of Thanos is on a new mission; destroy the whole universe to make a new one. The story for Endgame was a lot more jam packed with ideas and characters. For the most part, it worked. However, I wasn't a fan of how they handled the time travel, nor thought the five year time jump was necessary. That being said, everything else was absolutely golden.

The Characters

Both films had so many, it's hard to keep count. Infinity War devoted its screen time more to Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians of the Galaxy. In Endgame, it was all about the six original Avengers, along with Ant-Man and Ronin/Hawkeye. Infinity War did a great job of showing new hero interactions we've never seen before, and an even better job of structuring Thanos as a top notch villain. Endgame on the other hand was all about developing Iron Man and Captain America more, since this was more of a protagonist movie than an antagonist one.

The Hulk unfortunately was pretty much a no-show for Infinity War, but had plenty of time to shine as Professor Hulk in Endgame. Thanos was intimidating but sympathetic in Infinity War. However in Endgame, he felt more like a basic bad guy. I felt characters like Thor were treated better in Infinity War than Endgame, but someone like Captain America was the complete opposite.

The Russo brothers had so many toys to play with, yet they handled all of them well. If they didn't in one of them, they handled one better in the other.

The Action & Comedy

Another thing the Russo brothers are really good at; action. The choreography in the combat, the amazing effects and exciting set pieces. Watching these two movies is quite the adrenaline rush. Infinity War definitely had more action scenes, so in result, the runtime felt so much quicker than it actually was. Endgame on the other hand may have had less action scenes, but its final battle was better than anything Marvel has ever done before. It makes you want to get up and cheer, or heck, pick up a controller and play along.

Regardless, when it comes to the action, both of these films did more than a decent job. To say the least.

Now comedy is the least determining factor here, but we all know how funny Marvel movies can be. While both can be really dark, Infinity War and Endgame know how to lighten the mood with ease. Whether it's Tony Stark calling Ebony Maw "Squidward", or Cap admiring his own rear end. Bottom line, the quips are at full force in both films, and for the majority, it all lands.

Overall

You can't go wrong with either of these two films. Both are arguably the best comic book films of all time, so it's just a matter of preference.

Personally, I would give Infinity War the slight (and I mean, very slight) edge. I was more satisfied leaving the theater in Infinity War than Endgame. However, Endgame is about as perfect as a film of that caliber can get. It just made a couple decisions I wasn't down with. Like Iron Man dying instead of Captain America. Beautifully made scene, but I felt those two should've had their endings reversed.

All in all, Infinity War is still the king of comic book films. However, Endgame is only centimeters away from it, and if you think it's better, by all means. One thing we can all agree on is that Marvel has done themselves an incredible job making this universe. We can only hope more Avengers' films are in the works.

@MrCamw1 - see my comment below, I think you may agree. Its tough because Infinity War and Endgame are vastly different types of movies.

At this moment in time. I will say I like Avengers:Infinity War more but I have only seen Avengers:Endgame once and it might get better with repeat viewings.

I for once kinda agree with a writer here, Infinity War, as Heavy as it was edges out Endgame for me, for Dr. Strange really coming into his own, for Thor’s Characterization. Also, I actually much prefer Bruce Banner with ED over full time smart Hulk... also that scene where they are about to get Thanos glove off perfectly reminded me of X-men vs Juggernaut which i never heat anyone mention. Endgame for me just went a little too far on the depressing side at first, not that it lingered there, it’s still a 9.5 outta 10 for me, but Infinity War gets the 10, it’s so great.

I thought Infinity War was the better film, but Endgame was basically everything we wanted to see in an Avengers film. So it really just depends on what entertains you in a movie.

Here is how I look at it: I enjoyed Infinity War more from start to finish, but Endgame is by far the better movie and takes that epic and wow factor to 3000.

Infinity War was action packed from start to finish and one hell of an epic scavenger hunt across the cosmos for the stones. It is Thanos's movie. Yes, Thor also shines brightly character wise with some great development, there are awesome character moments (with Thor and Dr Strange). And there are some emotional character journeys. But the movie is largely driven by a single character and instead focuses more on scope and spectacle. Its the first time all these different franchises have truly been brought together in the same movie, and that is fully embraced on screen.

Endgame is much, much more character driven. I'd even go as far as saying that it is the most character driven movie in the MCU with a primary focus on development and journey of our heroes. The first two thirds of that film give us A LOT (and some of the best for certain characters) character development in the MCU, for ALL of the original 6 heroes (Hulk not quite as much as the others). And Ant-Man and Nebula (esp. Nebula) join in too. As a result of this focus, much of the first 2/3 of the movie involve quieter, deeper and more emotional moments (interspersed with some amazing fan service scenes). This makes the film a much more intimate journey in the first 2/3, and if you compare this with the first 2/3 of Infinity War, IW is certainly the much more exciting (but not better) film. But Endgame's third act makes up for the focus on character development in the first 2/3 of the movie; it is the greatest third act of any comic book movie in history, and one of the greatest third acts ever in a movie. Freaking epic beyond belief and really dials that wow factor up to 3000.

What Endgame achieved is second to none. If you think about all that the Russos delivered in that movie, its mind blowing that they were able to pull it off. The journey it took the characters and the audience on, the incredible love letter to the fans and the film's ability to truly wrap up character journeys that started almost a decade ago, its unbelievable. There is nothing else like Endgame, and we may never see such a satisfying conclusion to a saga like this.

So far all these reasons and more, Endgame is the superior film.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I completely agree with everything you just said and then some. But for me the tipping of the scale comes from how emotionally invested I am in the movie. Which where IW had that with the way it ended Endgame delivered several times throughout the movie. Thats similar to why I hold last years Won't You Be My Neighbor in such high regard.

Just saw it yesterday (finally) and I have to say I agree 100%. It was good, but didn't live up to what Infinity War set up in my opinion, and coming off the back of something as damn near perfect as Infinity War just made any missteps or disappointing moments all the more glaring.

And as you said, Iron Man and Cap should've had their endings reversed, or someone else should've made the sacrificial snap (Thor as an act of redemption for failing to stop Thanos the first time? Nebula to finally kill her father? Hawkeye to save his family, atone for going on a 5 year killing spree and to reciprocate Nat's sacrifice?)

Having said that, I did like the moment we had with Steve passing on the shield to Sam. As out of character as it was for Steve to abandon the Avengers, his role and his reality to have a normal life, it was a nice moment having him explain he did it because he was following Tony's advice.

I'm a Marvel kid. 'Infinity War' is the superior film. 'Endgame' was too long, too slow, and created more problems with time travel than it fixed.
