Marvel Studios Rumored To Be Turning Upcoming 6-Episode TV Shows Into Standalone Special Presentations

Marvel Studios may be changing course with its approach to storytelling on Disney+ as it sounds like we can expect a greater number of Special Presentations on the streaming serving moving forward...

Later this week, Marvel Studios will release Werewolf by Night, the first "Marvel Studios Special Presentation." Next up for that format of storytelling is The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, with both expected to be around the length of a typical cable TV show (so, roughly 45 - 55 minutes).

It's an exciting new approach to storytelling, and one it appears Marvel Studios will focus more on moving forward. While fans have been appreciative of the many MCU TV shows on Disney+, there's no denying that they've been a tad inconsistent, with some characters - Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel, for example - better suited for a movie than a six-part TV series.

Well, according to The Cosmic Circus, Marvel Studios is looking to make these Special Presentations a regular occurrence moving forward, and not just around the holidays.

This means they can continue telling stories that don't necessarily justify a movie or are simply better suited to a shorter style of storytelling. Werewolf by Night, for example, could have easily played out over six episodes, but everything we've heard suggests that the standalone 50-minute story is a pitch-perfect introduction to both that character and Man-Thing.

Apparently, many of the upcoming Disney+ TV shows mentioned by the trades - such as those Black Panther and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings spinoffs - are being planned as Special Presentations rather than full-blown TV shows.

Whether that will be the case for the likes of Wonder Man and Nova remains to be seen, but using this format to introduce those heroes before they show up in future movies or TV shows might be a much better use of Marvel Studios' resources (especially when it feels like Kevin Feige is being spread a little too thinly these days).

How would you guys feel about fewer TV shows and more Special Presentations from Marvel Studios on Disney+?

@Superheromoviefan - they should just stick to movies in general. Being shorter isn't gonna help she hulk.

@supermanrex - While the show isn't terrible, there is plenty wrong with She-Hulk especially the writing.

Not into it… these specials feel like ways to say they did a project, but without sinking budget into more than an hour of content

Honestly, I feel this is the way to go. There's more ground to cover for special presentations as opposed to series that focuses on a single character that takes up too much time. I don't think every single character needs an entire show.

@comicfan100 - I hate having to watch these shows in increments, I'm getting old and I can't remember everything!

I think that’s called… a movie.

@MosquitoFarmer - Movies are over 60 mins long, TV presentations like what are referred to are mostly under an hour long. I'm sure there will be a few exceptions to that rule.

@Uhhhhhh - movies are over one hour and 18 minutes* lol

@MosquitoFarmer - Think of these more like TV specials that just happen to be on streaming.

@Uhhhhhh - a movie can be 15 minutes. There’s no clear distinction on a movie runtime

I don’t know about these specials. Feels like they should just do movies. Even these series I feel would be better as movies in most cases. Loki worked great as a series & she hulk I guess works as a series although it’s not really for me but moon Knight was definitely off the way it was.

Most of the shows have been quite lackluster. We will see if Werewolf By Night can sell the single release special concept. I like the idea of bringing back extended one shots personally.

I'll wait and see how these two upcoming specials play out before deciding how I feel about it one way or the other. They may be fantastic or maybe not. Time will tell.

This seems like a good plan for shows like Agatha. A concept that may not have legs for 6 episodes but could be potentially very entertaining at under an hour

This could go from them having too much time on their hands to not having enough time

Not buying that at all. Disney+ needs more content not less. Just a few specials is going to increase churn to a ridiculous degree. Some people around here can complain all they want but the truth is these shows have been very successful. The Star Wars and Marvel shows are the only real original content propping up a very large streaming service.
