Marvel's Planned Slate From The 2000s Has Resurfaced And You Won't Believe What Was On The List

Long before Marvel Studios was created, Marvel Entertainment had a slate of movies planned, including some titles you might not believe never became a reality...or will be glad didn't see the light of day!

In the early 2000s, Marvel Entertainment had big plans for its characters on screen. After staving off bankruptcy, Blade, X-Men, and Spider-Man had all been hits for the company, and a number of projects were in development around that time which would have eventually joined them.

One Twitter user recently came across a slate announcement from the pre-Marvel Studios days, and it sure does make for interesting reading.

While some of the movies here did see the light of day, there are many that didn't. Man-Thing, a 2005 Iron Man movie, and Namor are among them, and we see there were once plans in place for the likes of Silver Surfer, Fury, Captain America, and Deathlok. A couple of those would evolve into Marvel Studios projects, but some of these characters still haven't appeared in their own movies.

Man-Thing has yet to be utilized, while there's still no sign of Namor the Submariner. Deathlok made a forgettable appearance in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., of course, but Silver Surfer has been on the shelf since appearing in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Hopefully, we'll see these characters in the MCU at some point, as Captain America, Iron Man, and Nick Fury ended up doing pretty well after their movies failed to materials the first time around!

What is this? What are these images from? A press event? What back then would have this display? A convention? Would Marvel back then be making marketing slates to display like this? Why... for what?

I need more info.

Wait... in 2004.... did Marvel own these characters? Wasn't FF at Fox, Namor at Universal and Spiderman at Sony......... what is this shit for?

@ElricReturns - I assume it was just plugging all of their films at various studios.

@ElricReturns - it was at a time when Marvel wasnt owned by Disney, so there wasnt any studio plans for the brand outside of licensing, so the were more relaxed promoting their films

@Chewtoy - at a convention? At an industry event? In what context was this slate used, is my question. I can assume just like anyone... I'm inquiring about details. I don't get why in 2004, when Marvel was not unified under any singular umbrella like the MCU, would they ever compile a physical display to showcase at a location a bunch of Marvel movies owned by different studios that never got made. I don't think a Namor movie was even possible to be made in 2004 with the legal rights being a mess until recently.

To me, my old man brain, I don't understand the practical reason for this slate display to be made, so I'm just trying to get facts, not speculation. I can theorize too all day, but I want answers.

@ElricReturns - I can only imagine they were showing Marvel projects at some comics convention cause indeed it mixes Fox, Sony and Universal stuff there.

@Dannywest - uh, my memory doesn't remember it like that. Granted I'm in my late 30s and my memory isn't as sharp as it was, but the 80s, 90s and 2000s were my era of focus, and I don't ever remember seeing unified slate advertising like this in any official capacity that showcased multiple projects from every studio making any Marvel movie. They didn't do that. Fox would market Xmen and FF and Daredevil, Sony would market Spiderman and Ghostrider, Universal would market Hulk. But I never saw a MARVEL SLATE for EVERY FILM regardless of studio. If anyone can find any other OFFICIAL not fan made or photo shopped slate released by Marvel other that this to prove me wrong, I'll be happy to change my tune and admit my ignorance. My memory isn't like it once was but I NEVER remember Marvel showing film slates of ALL of their films until the MCU.

@Fogs - yeah, I never remember them doing that prior to the MCU. I remember fan made crap. That photo shopped "slates" of logos with dates fans shared in comment sections of web sites and on MySpace. But never official studio stuff. Those studios never worked together back then, they competed. And MARVEL as a company would have to be the one to unite the studios to make a unified slate.... but why back then? Was this at a comic con? An industry show? Was this a press event? Or a selling stock type event? What practical, literal reason... what are these pictures from? What event?

@Chewtoy - I can't find a single other example online of a pre MCU unified Marvel movie slate online except for these images posted today.

So how do people remember this slate? Or any pre MCU offical slate?

I can't find a single other slate online for Marvel thats isn't MCU.

I remember this slate. I remember they had Werewolf By Night and Cloak & Dagger as movies in development at one point as well.

...man thing was a movie. Sure, they were overzealous here saying 2004 instead of its actual release date of 2005, but that movie did happen. You can even watch it on tubi right now if you wanted to (but don't it's God awful).

@Superspecialawesomeguy - most of them came out, and most of them went from average to awful

@Superspecialawesomeguy - still, to think we had all of them characters adapted, let alone done in the same universe is mind boggling
