The Marvel Studios cinematic universe began as a self financed project back in 2008 with Iron Man but has since spanned seventeen movies and grossed over $12 billion world wide. Now, the tremendous success of the studios latest offering, Thor: Ragnarok, has helped the MCU reach another milestone, cracking $5 billion in domestic box office receipts.

Thor: Ragnarok had an opening worthy of the God of thunder, with a current $46 million according to stats from Box Office Mojo, allowing the MCU to become the first ever franchise to cross the $5 billion mark domestically.

In the states alone, the franchise has soared past the Star Wars franchise ($3.3 billion), the Harry Potter Wizarding World universe ($2.6 billion) and the Batman franchise, including all versions of the character on the silver screen ($2.4 billion).

The MCU has had an impressive year with Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming grossing $862 million and $879 million respectively. The franchise won't be slowing down anytime soon either with Black Panther releasing in February and Avengers: Infinity War hitting screens in May.

We can only wonder what new heights the MCU will reach next.

Interested to see what happens after Infinity War and Avengers 4, it's a natural stopping point for most who have grown up with the franchise - given only a few new heroes have sequels after that point and multiple comments about how Avengers 3 & 4 will be a wrap-up to the stories prior.

@Scarilian - It'd be funny if Feige just said we're retired, we're done, and then closed the studio.

@MosquitoFarmer - Yeah, because that's they way any company works? Anything is possible, but that's so unlikely as to be, well, impossible.

They deserve it. I don't think any other studio has managed to achieve the consistent good quality that Marvel has so far, not even Pixar.
Bravo Kevin Feige. The skux life has chosen you.

This consistency of quality of product and financial success to accompany it is just unmatched in the history of cinema. It even outshines the Disney Renaissance.
