The MCU Becomes The First Ever Film Franchise To Hit $5 Billion Domestically With THOR: RAGNAROK
The MCU has crossed a massive box office line and has officially raked in $5 billion in the USA alone with the help of its latest release. Hit the jump to find out what this historic success means...
The Marvel Studios cinematic universe began as a self financed project back in 2008 with Iron Man but has since spanned seventeen movies and grossed over $12 billion world wide. Now, the tremendous success of the studios latest offering, Thor: Ragnarok, has helped the MCU reach another milestone, cracking $5 billion in domestic box office receipts.
Thor: Ragnarok had an opening worthy of the God of thunder, with a current $46 million according to stats from Box Office Mojo, allowing the MCU to become the first ever franchise to cross the $5 billion mark domestically.
In the states alone, the franchise has soared past the Star Wars franchise ($3.3 billion), the Harry Potter Wizarding World universe ($2.6 billion) and the Batman franchise, including all versions of the character on the silver screen ($2.4 billion).
The MCU has had an impressive year with Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming grossing $862 million and $879 million respectively. The franchise won't be slowing down anytime soon either with Black Panther releasing in February and Avengers: Infinity War hitting screens in May.
We can only wonder what new heights the MCU will reach next.
