Namor The Sub-Mariner Movie Still In the Works

Namor The Sub-Mariner Movie Still In the Works

It's still very possible that a Namor movie will be made by Universal pictures.

Prince Namor The Sub-Mariner is one of the Marvel characters to still have their movie rights held under option to a movie studio, in this case Universal, and not be part of the ‘crossover club’ sheltering under the Marvel Pictures roof. That disqualifies him from appearing in the Avengers film in any way, of course, but the ongoing appetite for Marvel movies means Universal have been keeping their Namor picture in development.

Currently attached as a director, it would seem, is Johnathan Mostow. His entry to the action genre was ‘bad-town’ thriller Breakdown, a film I never much cared for I’m afraid but which definitely put a rocket up Mostow’s career. He later directed the third, and worst, Terminator film and has the intriguing-looking Surrogates coming very soon. It was doing publicity for this one that he was collared by Collider and squeezed for comments on
Namor.

On camera, Mostow said very little. Off camera - though, it would seem, still on record - he managed to give a pretty clear indication of where the project stood. Collider’s Frosty couldn’t quote precisely, but did offer this paraphrase:

The other thing he told me was that the project was in active development. He said the big hang-up is getting the script right and they haven’t cracked it yet. He said making a great super-hero movie is really tough and without the right script it’s impossible. While I’d love to see a movie based on Sub-Mariner, it was refreshing to hear him talk so much about the ensuring the script’s quality before they can make it.

Of course, the overwhelming majority of super-hero movies have gone into production without “the right script” and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen again here if the timing, money, stars and need for a tentpole all line up in Universal’s sightline.

As far as I know, Namor doesn’t have any particularly great storylines or a wonderful rogue’s gallery busting with colourful antagonists. Can any of you fill me in on what a first-time Namor picture is likely to be about? All I really know about the soggy fella is that Marvel have called him “their first mutant”.

Namor was always one of my favorite under water super heroes.(I know there aren't many but he isnt that cool either) And a movie about him would be Bad Ass.

Thanks Lee

Vin Diesal would be cool. I kind of like David Boreanaz for the part when he was up for it.

Daniel Craig would be better for Aquaman. Namor could so kick Aquaman's ass any day by the way, just thought i would say that.

It would be Bad Ass if Marvel had it so that he could be in a cross over movie. Universal doesn't have any cool heroes that Namor could cross over with so that sucks.

divo,
If you remember at the end of the last FF movie. The Thing knocked Doc Doom into the Ocean. If they make another one and the bring back DD. Then the perfect set up would for Doom to invade Atlantis and thereby introducing Namor.

Watchtower13 is totally correct. Aquaman isn't even in his league at all.

Namor is one of the top three classic Golden Age Marvel characters. Just like Cap, there should have had a movie out about him a long time ago.

While it's true that there haven't been very many really doable stories that don't involve crossovers, it's certainly fertile ground for story telling.
For instance they could do the classic Atlantis attacks story, and just have it be a war story between the surface dwellers and the sea people. That could be fun.

WATCH @ Id love to see a match between NAMOR an AQUAMAN!!!

He should though have a cameo in CAPTAIN AMERICA! A few seconds with the INVADERS, maybe abit like the WATCHMEN but shorter!! Hell if they can have BUCKY in it, they can have NAMOR and co for an appearance! ; D

Idk if it would sell beyond comic fans. I mean Namor's great but not many mainstream viewers are gonna wanna see a solo movie. If he was in a crossover that'd be good, it would raise awareness of him and possibly lead up to his own spinoff.

Namor is a great "Team-Up" type of character, but solo, eh, not so much. Universal could probably do better by working out a deal with Marvel that would enable them to have a crossover story in return for Marvel being able to have Namor (with the same actor) in as a bit player for Avengers and Cap.

Maybe he could be the person that finds Captain Americas frozen body outside Atlantis and gives it to SHIELD, just thinking out loud, i know Namor would never talk to people like SHIELD.

Namor is cool! I believe they could make a kickbutt movie with Namor! You just have to have the right scriptwriters and casting and director to do it. I mean they did the Man From Atlantis and that was popular and it was pretty dorky!

Done right it would be epic, I think. He's always been very cool to me! Yeah, Jim Caviezel would be perfect for the part!

Jason Behr would also make a very good Dr. Strange. Everybody keeps talkin' Johnny Depp and rightly so but Jason looks the part too and is a totally underrated actor. And he would be inexpensive for Dr. Strange or Namor.

I wouldn't hold your breath on this even being good. "waiting for the right script"? Knowing and and keeping to source materiel is another thing.

Remember how awesome the scripts were to Wolverine? remember that hype?

I just don't see the Sub-mariner being a good movie.....

same here, joshw24.

Makes me really disappointed that he isn't.

I just hope that the Captain America movie leaves 'gaps' in his history to alot for the Invaders.

if namor isn't in the avengers it's because of marvel.

http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=14661&count=0

Rights to the hero are owned by Universal Pictures, not Marvel, so don't expect Sub-Mariner to be part of anything Marvel is currently working on. Universal keeps renewing the option for the property, which means that the studio is interested in one day putting together a film.

Supdog- That drawing is pretty acurate, actually. Namor would have been able to tare that plastic to shreads but Aquaman would be trying to communicate to the crabs by telepatheticism to have them try and cut the plastic. Of course, at the speed that those crabs go, he'd die of suffocation before those crabs ever got near it. You know, how could a spock lookalike in a speedo ever get to be less gay than Aquaman... bottle's the mind. Bang up job on that character conception, DC.

LEEE- I actually don't have a problem with Diezel as Namor. He's actually a very decent choice.
