DARK SHADOWS Opens To $550,000 At Midnight Showings; On Course For $30M Weekend

The film has kicked off to a fairly slow start with $550,000 at midnight showings and is now on course to make over $30 million over the weekend, despite facing off against tough competition in the form of Marvel's The Avengers.

Box Office Mojo reports that Dark Shadows made $550,000 from midnight showings, putting it on course for an opening weekend of $35 - $40 million. Marvel's The Avengers (it's main competition) is expected to reach anywhere between $75 million and $100 million domestically. The above projections may in fact be a little high as John Carter and Think Like a Man made a similar amount during midnight showings and ended up grossing less than $35 million in total. However, the Tim Burton helmed film is also opening internationally this weekend (where The Avengers has already been on release for over two weeks) and should perform fairly well. Stay tuned to CBM this evening for my review of Dark Shadows.

STARRING:

Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins
Michelle Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard,
Jonny Lee Miller as Roger Collins
Chloë Moretz as Carolyn Stoddard
Gulliver McGrath as David Collins
Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Julia Hoffman
Jackie Earle Haley as Willie Loomis

RELEASE DATE: May 11th, 2012.

I'm surprised it even got that much, looks terrible. I like Johnny Depp, don't get me wrong, but im fed up of all these weird characters. i want him in something normal but no like the tourist. the amount of times his wore white make up in the past few years, make me think its his natural complexion. dump tim buton, your better than that Johnny. His lost all his cred, you still have some!

So tired of the Burton / Depp combo pack. Burton hasn't made a really good movie in years. I hope The Avengers teaches him a lesson!!!!

The problem is that it is based on a property from the 70s that only people who were watching TV in the 70s know about, yet it is comedic, almost parody version of that property. They changed the tone from the original, so original fans are out; it is based on something no new movie goers know about, so who was its target audience?

I like Depp, it is too bad "The Tourist" did so bad, although I like his usual character I would like to see him normal more often.

I dislike Burton.

I'm so SICK TIRED of depp, he has long string of box office winners (1 billion movies) but all of them are major pieces of SHíT !!!!

I don't understand what people like to see in depp's movies, which are weird, ugly, cheap slap comedy & stupid intents of movies...

*argh!!!!!!!*

I wanted this to be like the way Beetlejuice was but it didn't seem to be in the latest trailer so alas it fails.

This... will probably make just as much money in it's entire first weekend as Avengers has made in it's domestic midnight showings alone. Which is to say it couldn't compete with Avengers to save it's life. Another on bites the dust. Next target... Battleshit.

So in the one showing Dark Shadows had that absolutely wasn't pitting it against Avengers and it only made $550,000. OUCH!
Ghostfire
Ghostfire - 5/11/2012, 2:52 PM
I literally just got back from seeing The Avengers again, so Marvel/Disney can count my $12 into this weekends total.

On another note, the only thing that even caught my attention about this movie is the lovely Eva Green. So... with that said, its Redbox for me.

$105million budget.
I think this will certainly make its cash back. Even if it's by a single dollar. Profit is profit.

Oh... 0__o well, never mind my previous concerns then.

Guess my wish for Burton finally bombing his way back to a good film may come true yet. Johnny and the rest of the cast will be fine.
