2021 Academy Awards Could Be Postponed In Response To Coronavirus (COVID-19) Concerns

We're still dealing with the fallout of coronavirus (COVID-19) in 2020, but it's looking like the pandemic will also negatively affect 2021, as the Academy is considering canceling next year's Oscars!

The 93rd Academy Awards don't take place until next February, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is considering postponing the ceremony according to a Variety report.

Sources tell the trade that nothing is concrete for the telecast which is scheduled for February 28, 2021, but one familiar with the matter says, "It's likely they'll be postponed." A new date hasn't been formerly discussed yet, and ABC has yet to officially change the original date.

Last month, changes to what makes a film eligible for the Oscars were announced, which means non-theatrical releases will be considered providing there were once plans for a big-screen debut.

While theaters are expected to open in July, it's slim pickings in terms of Oscar favourites at the moment - unless, of course, the Academy are happy for the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and The Invisible Man to pick up the biggest prizes. A lot of films will be unable to finish production to meet the Oscar deadline as well, hence why the Academy is having to consider making these changes.

Nothing is set in stone, but this shows just how much of an impact the coronavirus (COVID-19) is having on Hollywood. What this means for other awards show is equally as unclear for the time being.

Unless movies start pumping out again, either make it a tribute show for the span of the Oscars, or make it a nominated Best Of show, where you let fans vote for who should be nominated, and then subsequently vote for should win of the previous winners over the course of the Oscars.

But the latter would never happen. For one, it's obnoxious, and two, it's Hollywood.

Cancel the ceremony, sure, but if Sonic the Hedgehog ends up being genuinely one of the best (or only!) ten movies of the year, then I say it deserves the nomination!

And the Oscar goes to... Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) a.k.a Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey a.k.a just Birds of Prey

Good! After the sh*t show this year, I hope they're never aired again! Get up, thank your team/family/spouse/deity, sit down and shut up!

@CWBNGAJEEPGUY85 - What exactly was wrong about the Oscars this year? There were some major snubs, but it was a pretty great ceremony. Or were you just too offended by having to listen to people with different opinions from your own?

@SerKurtWagner - I didn't have to listen to anything. I'm all for a difference in opinions. #Merica, but when it's presented as fact and not opinion is where I get tired of it. I get it, Hollywood hates Trump and you're a vegan! great, I don't care what your opinion is...you're an actor!

@CWBNGAJEEPGUY85 -
1) If someone believes something to be true, they're not going to waffle around and say 'Well, this is my opinion." You like Trump. If you were to say "Trump is a good president" would you say it like you believe it to be true, or would you "present it as an opinion?"

2) Your caring about their opinion should have no bearing on them using their platform to share things that are important to them.

I would cancel it,especially when the category for Best Picture includes.

Harley Quinn Birds Of Prey
Star Wars Rise Of Skywalker
Sonic The Hedgehog

@marvel72 - Given that they already allotted for a temporary exception to the theatrical run requirement, this idea that there are "no good movies" is incredibly flawed. Just from Netflix alone we're getting movies by Spike Lee, Charlie Kaufman and David Fincher this year.

I get that a lot of the Awards season films are being delayed to next year, but its not like the only movies being released are Sonic and Bloodshot. We already had some strong releases (First Cow, The Invisible Man) and they've made an exception to the theatrical run requirement, meaning movies can be launched on streaming services and still qualify. Netflix already has films from Spike Lee, David Fincher and Charlie Kaufman lined up. And I think it's likely we'll see pieces like The Green Knight go that route if it isn't deemed worth it to launch later in the year.

If nothing else, we should want to keep the Oscars on so our boy Hugh Jackman stands a chance at winning for "Bad Education"!
