Amy Schumer Has Been Cast As BARBIE In Sony's Live-Action Take On The Classic Mattel Toyline
Sony's live-action Barbie movie has found its leading lady. Actress/comedienne Amy Schumer has been cast as a contemporary incarnation of the iconic blonde-haired doll...
In a very surprising bit of casting news, THR has revealed that Amy Schumer will play Barbie in Sony's live-action film of the same name. If the Trainwreck actress seems like an unconventional choice for this role... well, that's the whole point.
The Barbie brand has come under fire in recent times, and has had to address issues of self-image and race. Apparently the movie will try to address this by telling a story that begins in a perfect "Barbie Land", where "one woman slowly awakens to the fact that she doesn’t fit it. She is expelled from the idealistic land and journeys to the real world, where she discovers that being unique is an asset."
The studio is reportedly looking to make this "an imaginative family comedy", using the likes of Splash, Big, and Enchanted as templates.
The Barbie movie will be produced by Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald, and Amy Pascal. The search is on for a director.
