***SPOILER FREE REVIEW***
Most people on this site should be very familiar with
The Interview by now as it is not only the reason the infamous Sony Hack took place, but it may have been somewhat influential in the events that led to Spider-Man's so-called "return" to Marvel Studios, a topic I plan to soon discuss in an editorial.
Usually I do spoiler reviews, however, this is one of those films in which there really isn't anything to analyse or anything major to discuss other than whether or not this movie is any good (IE funny) or not and why.
It is often rare to have a film as bold as this one. The creative team of
The Interview already proved that they are not afraid to go too far with their comedy with
This Is The End and this film goes even further. If you do not enjoy the tasteless humour of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg then there is nothing in this film for you. However, those who do will find this ballsy comedy hilarious. If you are worried that this film would be yet another to portray the U.S. in an unrealistically heroic light while shunning everyone else, you'll be happy to know the film is more fair than that as it parodies EVERYONE, even Seth Rogen and James Franco themselves. If you are peeved when a film completely goes against current or historical events or doesn't stay true to reality then this definitely isn't the movie for you.
The first act of the film is by far the funniest as it is ripe with laughs with it's social commentary on entertainment and the media as well as with the interactions with Rogen and Franco. As the film moved along, the laughs begin to decrease but the film remains entertaining enough to warrant a full viewing. One recurring joke in particular was funny at first but over stayed its welcome due to over saturation. There is also a certain romance involving Seth Rogen that felt rather unnecessary as well.
My Score: 7.5/10
While not quite as funny as its predecessor, fans of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will have a ball. Hopefully the Sony incident hasn't put the creative team off of making bold comedies such as this one, which doesn't fear boundaries of its humour.
