DUNE: PART TWO Has Been Officially Greenlit For A 2023 Theatrical Release

Dune: Part 2 is a go!

Despite concerns that the first film would fail to find an audience when it his U.S. theaters last week, Dune had a better-than-expected opening weekend ($40.1 million), and has also been performing very well on the HBO Max streaming service. As a result, many believed a sequel announcement was imminent, and Legendary has now made it official.

“I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune: Part Two,” director Denis Villeneuve said in a statement (via THR). “It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune and I have the fans, the cast, and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning.”

“Denis Villeneuve has crafted a film that is both visually extraordinary and emotionally transporting, as evidenced by its global success both critically and at the box office," Added Toby Emmerich, chairman Warner Bros. Pictures Group. "We are thrilled to continue on this journey with Denis and his cast and crew, and our partners at Legendary, and can’t wait to bring the next chapter of this epic tale to theaters in October 2023.”

Strange, considering that this one hasn't even (and might not at all) turned a profit yet.
Is it true that Part 1 just kinda ends with no real closure?

@Feralwookiee - FeralWookie have you ever considered you don't actually what you're talking about? In general.

@Feralwookiee - It ends like Lord of the rings Part 1 the fellowship of the ring. There is a lot of foreshadowing and additional material but you get a true 1st part. Not as good as LOTR 1 but its pretty damn close and I recommend seeing it in theater if your up for it, if not just watch it on hbo max.

@Feralwookiee - It didn't need to make a profit at the box office. It just needed to be successful on some combination of theatrical and streaming, and clearly it has already achieved that

@PsychoBatemen - I asked a question, which is usually an attempt to get clarification, thus, I was unsure. So yes.

As far as a Part 2 being geeenlit before Part 1 even turns a profit, it isn't unheard of, but still, you'd figure they'd wait a bit to see the overall ww haul.

Here come the Snyder fans attacking WB for giving this a sequel but not Justice League. Suck it! I can’t [frick]ing wait.

@MovieMonster - being a fan of ZSJL.... I prefer X 1000 a sequel to Dune
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 10/26/2021, 2:41 PM
@MovieMonster - Problem is Justice League lost a lot of money and didn't get enough new subscribers for HBOMax. Mortal Kombat, Space Jams, KvG, and Dune got more views within its 1st week than ZSJL. Bob Greenblatt who lead and oversaw HBOMax got fired because he greenlit Justice League Snyder's Cut and lost them millions of dollar. Dune is doing well and is 1 of their biggest opening films so far for a streaming/theatrical same day release.

It may not have made enough back either but based on performance so far it looks promising.

@mastakilla39 - Dune got 1.9 milion views on HBO MAX according to samba, which is 100,000 more views than ZSJL.
If anything the sequel is happening more cause of the box office than HBO MAX.

@abd00bie - I don't think there will be any need for that with Part 2 now being greenlit :P

But a # campaign would probably had started if Part 2 had been cancelled.
