Joe Quesada Weighs in On Marvel's Movie Vs. TV Show Decision-Making Process

Marvel Comics editor-in-chief weighs in on Marvel's decision-making of using television shows, rather than movies, to introduce their many properties. Check it Out!

With news breaking yesterday that ABC & Marvel Studios are developing live-action Incredible Hulk and Cloak & Dagger television shows among others, it's obvious they're acknowledging different ways of introducing their many properties, besides in films. And speaking with Josh Wigler from MTV, Marvel Comics' editor-in-chief Joe Quesada seems to think this approach is the right one.

"If you can think of any viable Marvel property that you think might be good for a motion picture or television or animation, it has been discussed," Quesada told MTV News during New York Comic Con. "Those ideas have been put on a sort of priority list of things that we feel corporately are the best ones to attack first."

"The one thing we don't want to do is attack everything at one time," he continued. "Then you can't really maintain the quality of taking it from infancy and incubation to the final product. You want to be very, very careful, especially in the world of TV."

"In movies, we've been very, very careful about how we're releasing our movies," he continued. "We're not coming out there with five motion pictures in the same year. The constraints that it puts on the company, the fact that 'Thor' and 'Captain America' are coming out in the same year, it's a huge drain because we're a very small company."

"I do think we're taking the right approach for this," he said. "We are hearing the fans out there and strategically, we have to think about these properties not just domestically, but worldwide. We're part of the Disney family right now, we're an international company — Marvel's gone worldwide!"

The sad thing is, to the average joe .... FOX, SONY etc movies are MARVEL too!

As for live-action TV, MARVEL should have done that years and years ago...

'MUTANT X' and 'BLADE' in the last 10 or so years, wow lol.

Damn shame it takes DISNEY taking over to kick 'em up the butts to get anything done! : P

I'm okay with a Hulk tv series if they give it the budget it deserves and its not just Banner all the freaking time. Oh, and if there are actual supervillains.

I think Fantastic Four would make a great series if they put enough money behind it.

as long as none of the series end up like f*cking smallville.

i'll be happy, but i do also want to see big screen outings of these great charactors i.e the hulk, moon knight, agents of atlas, heroes for hire & the punisher.

Well Marvel was a stand-alone studio before Disney bought them out, and they already managed to release Iron Man and TIH in the same year. Not to mention IM2 was already done filming and Cap, Thor, and the Avengers were on the way. I think they were off their asses even before Disney came along.

I don't think they could have reasonably pulled off a TV series until now.I liked Mutant X and Blade, but those shows were either syndicated or on Spike.

With Disney behind them, they now have the option of being on ABC or ABC Family. They wouldn't have had that guarantee of being on those network years ago.

I would love to see a live action X-men series with comic/realistic costumes. Sadly I don't think a show like that would get the type of budget it needs to pull it off.
That and a Spider-man series. Foreget the REBOOT!!!

Didn't ABC tried to do a Justice League of America tv show without the heavy hitters. Kinda like Minor League of America.

What Marvel character belong on ABC family the only ones I can think of is the Fantastic Four and we all know that ain't happening.

I think X-Men would be excellent for a live-action TV series. Anyone else agree?

@indoraptor12: The problem with live-action TV series is the same problem that Smallville constantly runs into: budget. You can't jam in all the cool special effects that you need with the amount of money that you have allocated to the show.

X-Men require a ton of expensive special effects to do it right and that's why it would suck as a TV series. For a TV series, you want a superhero+villains that don't require as much intense special effect work. And that's one of the problems with Smallville (even though I like the show) -- to really do Doomsday, Brainiac, and Darkseid right, you need some amazing special effects and they just don't have the budget/technology to do it justice.

That's why "street" types of heroes like Punisher and Heroes for Hire and Shang Chi make more sense. Also, heroes where you can concentrate on more human/relationship sorts of things like Cloak and Dagger (although I can't see doing C&D without some intense special effects.)

I still find it hard to believe that they can afford to put a decent CGI Hulk on TV each week. A few of the other suggestions seemed a little hard to believe as well (from a budget perspective I mean) so I'm taking this while thing with a pich of salt until we hear from Marvel.

Shocker: To be honest, I cant think of anything more annoying than my inbox filling up with comments and replies - that's why I stopped using YouTube! If I want to reply to someone, I'll just use their name in bold or use CBM's awesome new chat box if I want more of an ongoing conversation. :)

Someone should ask if these TV shows will have any connection to the cinematic universe, however minimal the connections might be.

I think it's logical that some properties might work better on TV than in cinema. But I think it would be real fun for viewers to have them part of the same universe.

@Hulk2099: lol! I was waiting for you to say something. I gotta agree. Hulk TV in this day and age would be a dis-justice to the character.

At first, I was completely against Hulk stepping back into TV, rather than concentrating on continuing him in film. Then I started thinking about it.

Consider Marvel has been making plans for their characters since Disney bought them. They now have access to major effects companies and TV networks with guaranteed distribution. The Hulk CGI has already been built and established in film, but his films haven't made big money at the box office.

Now ask Ed Norton if he would consider staring in a new TV series with CGI hulk week to week. If he refuses, hire Mark Rufalo, and start putting the most epic Hulk TV show you can on the air every week, and tie him in to the Avengers film.

Marvel is striving for continuity. My guess is the first thing they asked is "Can we do the CGI, motion-capture Hulk every week for the budget?" When they figured that out, they green lit the project. And if the TV show picks up an audience, then the continued movies are a sure thing.

They can afford to do a CGI Hunk on ABC Family. They will do more shows on cable. I would assume that is where it will go because that is where Cloche and Dagger will air.

They were never going to give Hulk a 3rd shot in the Movies as a stand alone movie. So anyone who thinks this will replace that is nuts.
