Kevin Smith Wants To Direct A Movie Based On DC's THE QUESTION

The Clerks director has tackled several DC Comics characters on the page, but during his appearance at the Produced By conference in Los Angeles Kevin Smith revealed that if he were to adapt a superhero for the screen he'd like it to be Vic Sage, AKA The Question.

Despite being a huge comic book fan, Kevin Smith has never helmed a superhero flick, and while speaking to KPCC host John Horn at the Produced By conference in LA he admits that he's not likely to ever get the opportunity to. But, he says if he did he'd like to make a movie based on The Question.

Smith's idea would put a "noir-ish thriller" spin on the DC comics vigilante who uses a special substance to erase his features and a binary gas to recolour his cloths and hair. "I always thought if you were in an alley and f—ing Batman showed up you'd be like, 'Oh f—, Batman.' But if a dude shows up with no features and starts punching you, you would probably kill yourself in fear," he explained to Horn.

Despite being a fairly popular B-list character, there has never been a whole lot done with The Question outside of comics (his memorable appearances in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon aside), but there's plenty of potential there. Renee Montoya took up the mantle after Vic Sage, and she is currently played by Victoria Cartagena on Fox's Gotham so there's always the possibility she'll eventually don the faceless mask. A movie outing is less likely, but if Warner Bros. were to announce plans for one, do you think Smith should be the man to answer the Question?

Anyone but him to direct but this would work better as a TV series. Sounds a lot like Daredevil and his ethics coming into question as a lawyer by day and vigilante by night. As well as being a devout catholic. The Question and DD are very similar. Few comic fans realize that. The more I've read of both, I've noticed the obvious parallels

I wouldn't let Kevin Smith direct me to my seat at a movie theatre. Nice guy, but I don't want him doing anything outside his original material.

Kevin Smith is a great writer. He always has the best dialogue and if you give him something he's passionate about like The Question, he'll write the hell out of it. I just can't see him being able to direct a great movie, good but not great.
Maybe they can turn this into the first HBO or NETFLIX DC Show. No limits to the blood and gore and he could be a writer/executive producer.

No frickin way Question needs a solo movie. I don't even wanna hear this shit. Develop other properties first.

I hope he gets to do this. He lost Green Hornet and that turned into crap (while the comic he wrote based on his ideas was excellent).

I'm ok with this. Smith isn't the greatest director but given that we're talking The Question, I think he would be good enough to make a good film with Question. He does know the character.

Again Smith isn't the best director but considering its Question, I could see him doing fine.

Would prefer a series though.

Send K Smith back to the 90s where he belongs. Question would work better as a series anyway.

I'd suggest an HBO show based in Gotham, but the FOX series ruined any potential for that.

This would be amazing. Perhaps instead of a movie DC could consider letting him do a short netflix series like Daredevil. That would be pretty neat, as I don't feel The Question really requires ridiculous special fx so the budget could be smaller.

I just don't think DC/WB would ever do it as a movie. Probably feel it's too risky.

If he wants to do a Question movie, then the only question is: When can I buy tickets?

Would love to see a live action Question! <3

I do agree, however, that a series might be the better way to go. And if they decided to do the movie I'm not sure Smith would be the one I'd want to direct.

I should add that most of my knowledge about and appreciation for the character comes from the Justice League Unlimited cartoon. Therefore I'd love to see him in a continuity with other characters.
