Why are adult comics so taboo? I am not sure. For years adult book were always a big seller for me. I always carry the new stuff and stocked a good selection of back issues, but back issues are hard to come by. I have bought almost every collection offered to me there is never more than one or two issues of adult comics. I have scoured shows, stands, stores, and everywhere in between. Many dealers and stores do not like to carry adult comics. I just do not know why?
If you could find them it was always a hush-hush event with the dealer. Many times foreign espionage is not as secret as an adult comics buy. Some conventions do not even allow adult stuff at all. I understand not having them out where kids can see them and that is perfectly fine, but not being allowed to have them at all at the convention is ridiculous. Most conventions I go to I keep them behind the table and post a sign stating adult comics on request.
I started carrying adult comics on a lark and in a couple months the demand was so high even new issues were going for double price as soon as they hit the stands. Bondage Fairies is a perfect example of a good adult book. It is a great little sexed up manga book about a world of insects and animals.
I was first introduced to adult comics with Tim Vigil’s Faust. It is still one of my most twisted favorites. Many of the adult books that are being published have great stories and very influential art. Eros has been producing some very strong books for years. Do not misunderstand, there is some disgusting crap out there too. I do not condone books that promote violence against anyone in anyway. Rape or children that show up in an adult comic is simply inexcusable for any reason.
I believe one reason that adult books are not acceptable in many places is because the big 2 Marvel and DC do not produce them. DC has Vertigo and it has been one of the best imprints in history. Some of the best books ever were Vertigo. If you have not read Preacher or Transmetropolitan please run out and pick up a couple of trades. They are more than worth the price. Image produced The Pro by Garth Ennis and Jimmy Palmiotti which is a wonderful and humorous book. Marvel tried the adult line with Marvel Max. Basically Fury cursed a lot and Luke Cage got a little nookie. Although, I have to say The Eternals was one of the best things to come out of the house of ideas in years. Here is the best part, no one knows about it. Just when the powers that be give you hope they have decided to tone the books down for the kiddies. What a bunch of BS. The target audience for comics is 18 to 34 snapperhead. Diversity is not a crime. I am not asking to see Spidey buy a hooker, but a few adult books in the line up would not hurt. There is always the argument that porn degrades women. I sell almost as many adult comics to women as I do men. It is about a 60-40 split.
In conclusion to my rant. If you want a good read with descent characters and usually descent art. Pick up anything from Avatar, Garth Ennis, Al Rio, or Faust -an oldie but a goodie.

Marvel dont and dont want to know how to produce adult comics. Like you said, their idea of "Adult" is a bit of swearing or bloody violence now and again. They have never had anything as complex as Sandman, as risky and controversial as Preacher or as downright genius as Transmetropolitan. Dont get me wrong i love Marvel..i actually buy more at the moment than any other label..and as great as the writing is in say Brubakers Dardevil or Millars Wolverine at the moment, it just doesnt get my brain ticking like the above

Now, for a real adult orientated comic experience, check out "Horny Biker Slut" from last gasp! lol

Sandman is freakin EPIC! I would kill to see a Sandman movie. I'm not looking forward to the Preacher movie because there is no way it can live up to the source. It will be a difficult transision to film, but if its done right it would be awesome.

HAWK - get in line for that one! My greatest fear is that knowing the studios, we would all be in for a butchering of the source material to the point of it being ground up into an unrecognizable form and packaged into sausage-like media-friendly crap!

I remember sneaking peeks at Faust with my friend when we dug into his dad's comic collection. Our minds were blown that comics could be dirty. Reading this makes me want to actually read it as an adult, and see what it was all about. Comics are still a pretty intense medium I think, but it does seem that if you cross a certain line and don't have a big name like Ennis or Moore, your work never sees the light of day in most shops any more. Which is weird because there are more adult buyers than ever. If a no-name writer did a book like Ennis/Conner/Palmiotti's The Pro, it might never have made it onto a shelf. I've been reading popbot since book one. Very adult and very popular, but he too had a pretty big name before going to that title, and he had sam keith helping him pitch the first issue.

These are well written books that happen to have a lot of adult material though. When it comes to baseless porn, I don't know. Maybe that's better left to the porn shops, lest comic stores start looking like Family Video, having a soft core porn as every third choice.

Boob-mags like Balent's newer skintastic works just don't do much for me as a reader. I haven't read most of the other titles you listed, but I guess that's your point, they aren't really readily available as options. I was blown away that marvel tested out the MAX line. But even the most adult of them were still not super-risqué. And then of course they pulled all of the titles eventually. Then again, DC isn't innocent. They cancelled both Automatic Kafka and The Boys because they were too risqué for WB to keep as properties. Kafka is in permanent limbo, without a collection version as a result.

Thanks guys for all you comments and feedback. I do appreciate all the feedback. The basics come down to this, the true demographic for comic buyers is 18 to 35 males, although the female demographic is growing. It is not difficult to keep the more mature titles out of the hands of "little Billy" with proper setup of a good store. I was a store owner for years until selling out to "the man" and never once had a problem and I carried every adult book I could get my hands on. So until next time...
