The Steve Johnson FX Facebook Page has recently uploaded a series of more photos of behind the scenes designs of the Superman costume for Tim Burton's cancelled Superman lives, as well as concept art of Superman and Doomsday. Also uploaded was an album of Iron Man designs and photos of a prosthetic hulk for a 1998 film version of Hulk.

I think the prosthetic Hulk would have been very cool to see on film and hopefully we'll get something like it in the upcoming television series.

A prosthetic Hulk would probably be the way to go for the tv series. If that was the design I'd be cool with it.

I love the Iron Man and Hulk pics.

The first four Superman pics remind me of the aliens from "The Abyss". The first Doomsday pic looks like Clayface, while the second one reminds me of the creature from the 1988 horror film "Leviathan."

Iron Man is too retro-ish and that to me is not about Iron Man. Thank god for Adi Granov we're seeing Iron Man armors in movie and comics that are progressing along with modernity.

You know... the ninth picture from the bottom would look like a REALLY sick Parasite. And the 6th from the bottom (doomsday) could look pretty cool if if had more spikes and less random faces.

@ bullsize:
hahaha that one pic of doomsday really does look like Abomination!

But i thought Abomination from the incredible hulk could make a pretty cool Doomsday... it would have to be tweeked a little, but still, a nice base.

And the first doomsday pic would be a cool Chemo... I think the rest look like shit

SUPERMAN= almost makes me angry how silly these were. personally, i think the suit needs to stay along the lines of the original as much as possible, but if an update was cool, i'd buy. but burton's make him look like a damn christmas tree. STUPID

DOOMSDAY= pretty terrible. first thing i think of is the monster from cloverfield. i know it doesnt look a lot like it, but thats what comes to mind for me. def doesnt look like doomsday.

IRON MAN+HULK= pretty flippin cool.

I'm thinking the light bright superman costume was meant to be a brainiac design. (Brainiac was the main villain in the script)

Glad that didn't happen. Burton is great with Dark stories. He changes to many iconic thigs. Fore a Kat like Superman. It worked with Batman, but if he would get over him self he would be even greater then he is.

Personally my favorite is the Iron Man costume. It's got the modern tech with the old school design from one of the first suits in the comic.

That superman suit looks like a mix of Tron and Lawnmower man, that ran through a rainbow...........

It really is humiliating to think of even the slightest possibility that Superman could have ended up in that suit, in Tim Burton's coco-pebble world.......

Hulk is Cool as shit
Iron Man looks crap

It always amazes me when studio's and directors make huge changes to stuff that has already been a proven winner in other mediums. Like when the Director of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince actually changed stuff in the story, this is one of the biggest selling series of books ever and printed in almost every language and this guy said," you know I think I can do it better". Same with the Superman suit, the black Spiderman suit, origin stories, I mean c'mon!!! Superman is a universal logo everyone knows, why the hell do you mess with something that has lasted longer than most of these people have been alive?

I'm sooooo glad that movie never got made. What an awful pile of crap that would have been. Thank you Tim Burton for reinventing Batman in 1989 and giving the world something other than that stupid show from the 1960's. Now go away.

WTF WAS BURTON THINKING, that superman suit is just plain wrong, burton did a good job making comicbook character serious but i mean seriously, was he high
SageMode
SageMode - 12/9/2010, 12:41 PM
That Iron Man suit sucks, the Superman suit is cool, but not for Superman himself, the Hulk model looks cool, and the Doomsday concept looks too much like how the Abomination looks in the Incredible Hulk movie.

I THOUGHT CAGE WAS A HUGE FAN OF SUPERMAN, HECK HE NAMED HIS SON KAL-EL...YOU WOULD THINK AFTER SEEING THIS STUPID COSTUME HE WOULD SAID "EFF THIS, WTF IS THIS???"...

I CAN IMAGINE THE STUDIOS SAYING"ARE YOU GUYS INSANE?? THE FANS WOULD HUNT US DOWN WITH TORCHES AND PITCHFORKS, GTFO!!!"

FYI ON "SUPERMAN LIVES"..........

Superman Lives began development in 1994 as soon as Warner Bros. reacquired the rights to Superman from the Salkinds. It was to be directed by Tim Burton, starring Nic Cage and written by Kevin Smith. This film never got going, or in Burton's words was "made in his head" but he made the error common in films that never get made in that he "forgot to film it".

The story was to be an adaptation of the immensely popular comic book Death Of Superman and Warner Brother's after chucking out various scripts went with Clerks writer/director Kevin Smith.

Smith seemed the perfect choice to write Superman Lives but had a formidable advisory in producer and former hairdresser Jon Peters who's obsessions with gay robot's, giant spiders, space dogs and Polar Bears would make Smith's work a little difficult.

Peters had produced the first two highly successful Batman films and both he and the WB discovered that they made more in merchandising than from the actual movies themselves. Jonny boy's problem is that he wants Superman to be more like a trip to Toys'R'Us than a kick ass movie. So he added pointless contraptions, suits and doo-hickies to the film purely to make toys of them.

When Burton arrived one of his first acts was to trash Kevin Smith's script. He wanted to bring in all his own writers and thus began the Smith vs. Burton catfight. Smith threatened legal action in 2001 for Burton's 'Ape Lincoln' ending in Planet Of The Apes which he had done in a Jay & Silent Bob comic years before. Burton claimed not to read comics and never to have read anything by Kevin Smith. Now whenever Smith signs bootleg Superman Lives scripts he writes F*** Tim Burton. if anyone has one of these bad boys I'd appreciate it if they can scan it in and send it this way!

Nic Cage was cast as Supes - much to the dismay of pretty much everyone. Cage is a comic book fan and took the Superman gig with much enthusiasm and also came up with this quote which I thought I'd include as it's pure cheese "I hope I can still do this because I think it will be a very enchanted movie." Wanting to reach out to the kids Cage went on "It's OK to be different because Superman is different. If one child sees that and says 'maybe I'm Superman' then I've done my job." I actually quite like Nic Cage and enjoy his films it's just I think he was the wrong choice for this role - casting such a big name as Superman is generally a bad idea.

The producers of the original Superman movie wanted Robert Redford to be The Man Of Steel but director Richard Donner wisely persuaded them to go with the then unknown Christopher Reeve. This decision was based on the fact that the audience would be seeing a star in tights and wouldn't believe the character. This is why Cage was a much loathed choice for the role, people just weren't ready to buy Cage as Superman.

Burton and Cage eventually left the project. With both saying it took "too long" and the were right. The film was to be based around the Death and Return of Superman comic book story arc. After Burton left various directors were linked including Oliver Stone and Robert Rodriguez but nobody committed. Scriptwriters came and went each writing screenplays that didn't do The Man of Steel justice. The WB eventually made a decision to put Superman on ice and go with the rootin' tootin' Will Smith classic Wild, Wild West as their big summer blockbuster. Things didn't go quite as planned and the Jon Peters produced western bombed. It seems giant spiders DON'T equal success at the box office after all!

@GUNSMITH- Lol, I love hearing Kevin Smith talk about Superman lives. The thing is his script probably wouldn't have sucked so much if not for Jon douchebag Peters and his giant [frick]ing Spiders.

Great post Gunsmith. I am so glad this movie was never made. Tim Burton's Batman movies sucked bad enough to me. The first was okay, but the actors and bat toys were the best parts of it. The writing was crap for that whole first franchise. Seeing Batman Begins and the Dark Knight serve to show just what a joke the first franchise was. I am not interested in any Burton directed CBMs. Major problems I see for Superman Lives are 1. Burton's direction. 2. Nick Cage as Superman. 3. Nick cage in that latex nightmare of a costume. 4. Any of those costumes or concepts for SM or Doomsday. 5. Tim Burton.
On another note, the Hulk looks awesome!

Love the Pics and all the Info I didn't already know about the Superman project..

I think sometime in the future, there should be some hilarious comedy or documentary about why "Superman Lives" wasn't made and all the drama behind it.lol

Good Find!
