Paul Bettany and director Scott Stewart answered fans questions at a Fangoria Q&A held at Sony’s Lincoln Square theater in New York last night. Below is just a portion of what actor Paul Bettany had to say.
On working with Director Scott Stewart...
"I'm a big fan of Scott's. We made a movie before for very little money, and he was given the chance to make a movie with me and three times the budget, and I thought, 'Wow!' To be able to see, to be able to be a part of seeing Scott really realize his vision onscreen and have some really great paints and a much broader canvas was a really exciting idea for me. And I loved the part. It's a big departure for me -- you know, the sort of stoic, the sort of classical, tight-lipped man of few words… The idea to be that tough guy was attractive to me. I haven't had so much fun making a movie ever in my whole life. There's days we sat there just calling for more blood."
On Playing The John Wayne, tough guy role...
"I always wanted to be that guy when I was a boy, so that was the person [that] I was really interested bringing to the screen. You know, somebody's who really good at hurting people, and now the war's over and what does he do? What world is there left for him? He has been rendered useless for normal life, and it must be really hard not to practice something that you're really good at. Like hurting people."
Bettany also had the following to say recently at (((examiner.com)))...
"You know, I was getting paid to run around and kill vampires and every day was a great day. Even days where I got damaged just felt like, sort of, boyhood fantasies. So, all of it was good. People have been asking whether it's hard with the CG and imagining stuff and I've been telling the story about when we were on the salt flats and it's the train sequence. They are pulling the train car by a truck across a salt flat at 50 miles per hour and I'm on a bike attached to a jeep, I've got a wire between me and this other vehicle, and then I have to stand up on the bike and jump onto the train at 50mph. I thought, what the... I remember my heart was going like a stopped clock, you know, like a broken clock. I was; What the [frick]? How did I [frick]ing get here? You know? I'm on a wire, I am almost certainly going to be alright. It is thrilling and frightening and you're simply not worrying about whether they're going to CGI the rest of the train in. I didn't [frick]ing think about that, all I'm doing is looking for my handhold and jumping. I suppose there was one time that was hard. If you've seen the trailer there is a moment where I leap up and meet a vampire in midair and stab him, and take him down, and cut his heart out. Of course, as we all know, vampires don't exist. So, there wasn't a vampire there... I was running across the yard, I leap up into the air, I feel the rig take me up, I raise my knife and I meet an incredibly unthreatening pillow that is swinging toward me on a rope. I meet that pillow and I [frick]ing stab the shit out of it. That was a peculiar moment because you are actually going on so much faith. This pillow will look like a vampire, right? Because right now it looks a lot like a fluffy, down pillow."
