PUNISHER Star Jon Bernthal On Frank Castle's Growth (Or Lack Thereof) In DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN

Jon Bernthal is still being a little tight-lipped about his return as Frank Castle in Daredevil: Born Again, but he did briefly touch on whether The Punisher has grown at all since we last saw him...

After debuting in Netflix's Daredevil and starring in two seasons of his own Punisher spin-off series, Jon Bernthal is set to reprise the role of Frank Castle in Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again.

Despite the trades confirming the news, The Bear actor is still somewhat hesitant to discuss his return, but he did share a few interesting details with Screen Rant. In a new interview, Bernthal was asked if we can expect Frank to have grown as a character since we last saw him.

"I don't know yet; I don't know. It's too early to tell. And you know how Marvel is, I really can't say anything anyway. But I care about Frank deeply, and no matter how much Frank grows, he's always going to be the same."

This is really the basis of the character, at the end of the day. Castle may grow and change his ways to an extent, but if he ever hangs up his guns, he stops being The Punisher.

In a previous interview, Bernthal promised that he's going to ensure that we get a comic-accurate take on the ultra-violent vigilante in Born Again.

"I also know that it’s absolutely essential that if we do it, we do it right and we have real sacred integrity to the source material and to what is at the core of Frank. I’m gonna do my absolute best to make sure that, if and when we do it, we do it right.”

Will Frank Castle be allowed to be as uncompromisingly brutal as he was in his own show? We had been led to believe that Born Again was going to be PG-13, but the recent news that the show will be released under the Marvel Spotlight banner has led to renewed speculation that it will be TV-MA.

Castle and Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) have a lot of history in the comic books, and even though they don't cross paths in Frank Miller's Born Again comic, we already know that the show is going to make some significant changes to the source material.

Initially, Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll were not going to be a part of the series, but after a significant overall, it seems they will reprise their respective roles as Foggy Nelson and Karen Page after all.

Born Again doesn't have a release date, but last week, Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk) revealed that filming is set to resume "not long from now... in a few weeks, in fact." The actor also mentioned that the show will have a similar tone to the Netflix Daredevil series.

Marvel sucks. Right guys???

@Comicmoviejunki - It sucks nowadays yes, but that doesn't mean they can never produce another good film again. They need to go back to hiring real film writers instead of going for activists.

@harryba11zack - I think people just need to realize the difference between sucking and mid. There are TRULY shitty CBMs out there and MCU has not stooped to those levels.

I think because they set the bar so high for themselves people look at mid and think bad. Just look at Thor 2. If that came out today, people would drag it thru the mud. But it released in Phase 2 and people weren't losing their minds about it. This also lends to the fact that Phase 4 actually reviewed better than Phase 1 and 2 but people can't seem to put it all into legitimate perspective.

@Comicmoviejunki - Marvel's utter shite.

Mind you, I'll still watch every thing they put out though -- gotta' be relatively knowledgeable when I bitch about it -- but it's because I hate what they've been doing for years (if not since the very beginning), not because I'm a sheep like the ones who like it.

@Comicmoviejunki - I think you can say that Marvel is objectively a shell of what it used to be.

@TheLobster - Yeah Marvel hasn't exactly been doing all too great lately as they put out a lot of misses recently however there has been some good ever since Endgame.

Misses IMO:

Eternals
Thor: Love & Thunder
Wakanda Forever
She-Hulk
Secret Invasion
Echo
Black Widow
The Marvel's
Moon Knight

Hits IMO:

Spider-Man: Far From Home
Spider-Man: Now Way Home
Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special
Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3
Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania (Still don't get the hate for this one)
Loki
WandaVision
Falcon & Winter Soldier
Hawkeye
Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness
Werewolf By Night
What If..?

I'm just not as excited for MCU films/tv shows like I used to be.

@marvel72 - a fair bit of 33 film? If 17 of them sucked that's,1 film more than half, I would agree. IMO 3 suck and 4 are mid. The rest good to great. And then of course you have 3 or 4 epic movies. So.....

@Mercwitham0uth - yes. The hits list is definitely longer than misses. Yet it seems people on this site forget the wins-loses

@Mercwitham0uth - also. Wakanda forever was good. The Marvel's and Echo were ok. In my opinion.

@Comicmoviejunki - I don't get why people lump Wakanda Forever in with the mid. Sure that Ironheart character was a shoehorned character whose functions as a plot device could have been fulfilled by Shuri, but that's literally the only bad thing I can say about that movie. Other than that it's really, really good.

Wakanda Forever is a good movie.

@Comicmoviejunki - I just couldn't get into Wakanda Forever. I was bored through most of it. I really think they should have recast the role of T'Challa.

I watched the Marvel's (cam copy) and it was a chore to sit through. Too many terrible moments.

@Mercwitham0uth - I felt Love and Thunder was a chore. The Marvels was less silly and goofy and more fun too me

@dragon316 - You dodged several bullets, his set up in DD was more than enough, his series was a drawn out waste of time.

@HashTagSwagg - I’d agree with the second season (though it’s watchable imo), but I thought the first was a solid run.

@JustAWaffle - I agree for the most part, except I couldn’t stand the sound season, that female therapist that fell for his brother in arms, it felt like they were doing something similiar to Vanessa and King pin but the actress that played Vanessa made it so believable that she would get with king pin despite his criminal activities but the therapist in punisher season 2 just seemed to flip a switch and it came off so corny, every time she spoke, couldn’t stand it lol. Her turn just wasn’t believable.

@HashTagSwagg - I didn't dislike the Punisher series, but his best stuff definitely was in the Daredevil series and being in contrast to Daredevil himself.

@Slotherin - I agree his role in DD season 2 was the best. Kind of shows that he works best as a supporting character. I love Bernthal, and Punisher season 1 was great, but I don’t think he fits as a leading man (unless his niche of acting could be written just right).
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/17/2024, 4:39 AM
@HashTagSwagg - I've been doing a massive Netflix Marvel binge and after one episode of Punisher I had to sit myself down and tell myself that I started this binge and therefore I was the one in control and if I wanted to skip both seasons of Punisher and just go straight to Jessica Jones S2, I was allowed to.

I was like, nobody is making you do this. Just don't watch the two Punisher seasons if you don't want to.

I just couldn't sit through all that wasted time. I saw them when they first came out. I never need to see them again.

It surprised me that I didn't mind re-watching Iron Fist Season 1, but when it was Punisher time I was just 'Nope!".

HashTagSwagg - 1/17/2024, 5:02 AM
@ObserverIO - I used to feel obligated but yet excited to watch anything MCU. tried to get into agents of shield multiple times as fans keep saying it got better which I'd say if there where improvements the difference would be stepping on shit and the improvement is that only half of your foot landed on shit. That was the first MCU related thing I checked out on. Never considered it canon. DD and DD season 1, has a certain quality and they're fairly rewatchable. The rest I struggled to get through but still did it in the hopes that they'd eventually hit the same quality of the good ones eventually it got to the point where I just felt it wasn't worth it and liking the characters in the books wasn't enough for me to give them my time so I skipped JJ halfway through season 2, didn't bother season 2 of the lC or iron fist when I saw from other reviews that that was no change in quality.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/17/2024, 5:16 AM
@HashTagSwagg - Season 2 of Iron Fist was a little better, but only in the same way that Agents of SHIELD got a little better. Not really worth it.

And if this is how we feel, imagine how the general audience feels right now with all these Disney+ shows.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 1/17/2024, 10:43 AM
@ObserverIO - I'm wildly curious what held up for you for s1 of Iron Fist.
