BOX OFFICE: RED 2 And R.I.P.D. Become 2013's Latest Big Budget Box Office Flops

Surprised? No, neither are we. Both Red 2 and R.I.P.D. opened at the North American box office this weekend, and both have been major disappointments for their respective studios. Does this mark the end of any future non-Marvel/DC superhero movies? Read on for details.

Thanks to our friends over at @ERCboxoffice, we have some updates for this weekend at the North American box office. As you can see, both Red 2 and R.I.P.D. have not opened well (although the latter has done significantly worse than the Red sequel), while The Lone Ranger and Pacific Rim are also proving to be two more big budget let downs. Of course, they make their numbers up internationally, but things aren't looking great for the other two. One can't help but wonder whether the underperformance of movies like these will result in studios being less willing to take chances on comic book properties which aren't mainstream superheroes. Even adaptations of Mark Millar's well-known properties such as Nemesis and Supercrooks seem to have come to a halt!
