Filming on
Avatar 2 has wrapped for the year. James Cameron's long-awaited sequel to 2009 blockbuster still has a long way to go before its release in 2021, but
the oft-delayed sequel is one step closer. And for that, it is reason to celebrate.
The official Twitter account for
Avatar shared a behind-the-scenes photo of one of the film's massive sets to mark the end of live-action filming 2019. The photo gives us a look at
"the aft well deck section of the Sea Dragon," dsscribed as
"a massive mothership that carries an array of other sea-going craft in the sequels."
There are a total of four
Avatar sequels planned, with the first two being shot simultaneously. Back in February, director James Cameron briefly spoke about upcoming installments in the sci-fi franchise,
addressing the live-action component.
"[Performance-capture] is the vast majority of the characters, and that is the vast majority of the running time of the film," Cameron said at the time.
"That pesky little live-action component is going to cost me five months of my life, across the two movies."
This isn't the first time the
Avatar account shared a look behind-the-scenes. In October, we were offered another sneak peek at what looks like some sort of sea wreckage.
Barring anymore unforseen delays,
Avatar 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2021.
