USA Today has debuted our first official images from the next film in the rebooted Apes franchise, War For the Planet of the Apes, and revealed some plot details while they're at it. Following the events of the last movie, Caesar (Andy Serkis) finds himself in a "very dark place", as the struggle to protect his people brings him into conflict with a merciless military man known only as The Colonel (Woody Harrelson). Our first glimpse of the character below may have you wondering if his last name is Kurtz!

"The Colonel is willing to go to great lengths to create a world where things can be gentle again,” says returning Dawn director Matt Reeves. “But the journey he takes you on is chilling.”

"He and Caesar ultimately face off, yet there’s also bizarrely a kind of respect and understanding from both sides,” adds Serkis. “It’s understanding the condition of the other person, what they’re having to suffer through and what they’re trying to protect.”

Be sure to chek back later on for that first teaser trailer, and head on over to USA Today for more from Serkis and co.

Woody Harrelson stars as the merciless Colonel, a military

In ‘War for the Planet of the Apes,’ the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

This series has been pretty underrated, imo.

@MattBellissimo - They're great movies (last one especially) but I think they might be a bit bleak for some.

@BillCipher999 - Honestly the action scenes towards the end of both movies are the worst parts. Or at least, the least compelling parts. I like how these movies are drama first. I don't want War for the Planet of the Apes to be an action movie :(

@BillCipher999 - It's particularly bad in the first one. It's so intelligent and dramatic, and then suddenly there's an ape army. It doesn't make sense how they're all suddenly so intelligent, even the ones from the zoo. The apes are too co-ordinated, and for some reason they don't stop jumping through windows which is absolute nonsense.
The movie was going so well but it's almost as if the studio decided they needed to tack on an over-the-top action sequence.

@Boyle360 - they have all had those things in them, you shouldnt have watched this movie if you werent expecting

if they never had those things, which were dark and buetful it would have sucked

so i seriously disagree with you

@BillCipher999 - I would love for them to explore different terrain. Such as the apes migrating to the east coast and showing how they survive the Winter.

CaptainElrond - 12/9/2016, 4:00 AM
@SonOfAGif - im fairly sure we will see the winter but the west coast is a big step

remember to do that they would have to get through a whole post apocalyptic america who wants them dead.

Preahps in apes 4, which should be happening.

@neuromonitor - But that's not what he did. That Kevin Hart meme is used all the time to express initial excitement and then disappointment, whuch is what he was doing. You simply drew the incorrect conclusion that because Hart happens to be black and he mentioned apes, that he was being racist.

@RorMachine - it's your duty to not take chances, my friend... we are a community here , and you are our oversight, which means your responsibility to not support racial slurs in any form- ambiguous, unintended, or worse.... it's how it looked
