Big news for fans of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi novels here, as THR reports that Mission: Impossible - Fallout star Rebecca Ferguson is in negotiations to star opposite Timothee Chalamet in Denis Villeneuve's Dune as Paul Atreides' mother, Lady Jessica.

For those unfamiliar with the source material, Dune follows the Atreides family as they relocate to the desolate planet of Arrakis to assume control of the production of the most valuable resource in the galaxy, the Spice Melange. Unfortunately, an act of treachery soon makes an outcast of The Duke Atreides' youngest son Paul, and he must accept his destiny as a powerful prophet of the Arrakis natives known as The Fremen.

There have been several different adaptions of Dune over the years, the most famous - or infamous, depending on your perspective - is David Lynch's ambitious, but flawed 1984 movie starring Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Kyle MacLachlan.

This latest take will be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.

Not a fan of the original, but she's a good actress.

@LordHarryLatts - its an ODD movie.

Lynch is one of my favortie directors ever and aive seen and liked almost everything he's made. Dune is certainly kne of the most unique films he has made (everythimg the guy makes is peculiar in some way).

But the plot is pretty incoherent. I think of it as a mood piece.

@LordHarryLatts - Watch the TV miniseries. It's solid.

Denis Villeneuve directing a Star Wars-esque movie is a dream come true for me, I could not be more hype
GhostDog

@ELAYEM - I've always thought of DUNE as the most ANTI-STAR WARS movie.
ELAYEM
ELAYEM - 9/5/2018, 5:47 PM
@BlackBeltJones - Interesting, I've never read Dune, but heard of the similarities.

Epic space opera, main desert planet, princesses, the Force/Voice, giant sand worms, etc.

I imagine it's pretty different in theme and tone though as Star Wars is family friendly and Dune isnt?

That's still kinda my dream movie because I love the mythology and visuals of Star Wars but lean towards darker films, and I understand Star Wars will never be that.

@ELAYEM - yea the themes and tone are vastly different. Dune is super dense and dark in a way that's haunting.

Star Wars is a very human movie while Dune (the book as well) is very monotone and cold.
ELAYEM
ELAYEM - 9/5/2018, 5:56 PM
@BlackBeltJones - Gotcha. Sounds like my dream movie haha, especially with Denis directing.

@ELAYEM - The way I would describe it is like this:

Star Wars is a story about humans. A boy and his father. A princess and a scoundrel. An emperor and his apprentice. Politics serves as a background for personal stories about the characters themselves.

Dune is a story about humanity itself. What it means to be savage or civilized. Progress, stagnation, and decay. Grand sweeping arcs of history are being played out in Dune, and it's the history of civilization itself that is the main character, not individuals. The people in Dune (even Paul and Leto) are only vessels for history to act through.

In that respect, the franchises couldn't be more different.

IMO
Arrival was the best movie of 2016
Blade Runner 2049 was the best movie of 2017

At this point I would watch Villeneuve direct paint dry.

Just realized Rebecca Ferguson is 12 years older than Timothee Chalomet and playing his mother...

I guess it works, Ferguson is beautiful but looks a little older than her age and Timothee looks younger than his age.

@ELAYEM - Timothee is like Tom Holland, they both look like they are still in high school.
Ferguson does look like she is 40-ish, yet still gorgeous.
ELAYEM
ELAYEM - 9/5/2018, 5:49 PM
@Pantherpool - Yeah exactly. Chalamet could easily play high school, and Ferguson looks like hollywood 40s, like a Jennifer Aniston / Cate Blanchett type

I'm anticipating this movie so freaking hard!!! Most anticipated I'd say.

I'm trying not to overhype him, but Denis Villeneuve is my favorite "new" director. Him and Neill Blomkamp were my jams, but Villeneuve has yet to disappoint me where Blomkamp's last 2 projects have been lame ducks.

I'm an obsessive Blade Runner fan, and there was no way Denis was going to be able to meet my ridiculously high expectations, but somehow he surpassed them, blew them out of the sky! I consider Blade Runner 2049 a masterpiece.

Can't wait for his DUNE.

Prisoners and Blade Runner 2049 are both phenomenal. So is Arrival. Denis is easily one of the best working directors.
