READY PLAYER ONE: Steven Spielberg Explains Why He Chose THE SHINING For The Film's Standout Sequence

Let's face it, 2018 has been a great year for cinema so far, with Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One being one of its biggest surprises. Though many fans were on the fence regarding Spielberg's latest sci-fi flick, many came around after seeing the finished product, an ultimately fun and heartwarming Easter Egg-filled adventure.

One can argue that The Shining sequence, based on the Stanley Kubrick-helmed classic, is one of the highlights, if not the best scene in the film. The segment puts Parzival and the Gang right into the 1980 horror film, while also serving as an homage to Kubrick’s work. Through the screen, one can feel the passion and care Spielberg took in getting the setpiece just right. And with the homage being kept under wraps before the film’s release, audiences were in for a treat.

Here’s the heartwarming reason why Spielberg specifically chose to use The Shining for the sequence:

It was nostalgic for me because I first met Stanley Kubrick on the set that I depict in Ready Player One. The main living area with the grand fireplace in the Overlook is where I first encountered Stanley in 1979 when I went to look at the sound stages.

Following this they had dinner, eventually becoming good friends in the industry. At the time, Kubrick was already established as a generational artistic influence, while Spielberg was only in pre-production for Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The pair would later collaborate on A.I. Artificial Intelligence.

@JK2point0 - it’s super boring and overrated. I recommend skipping it, it does not live up to the tremendous amount of hype it has. If you do watch, don’t expect anything particularly scary or interesting. Just some dude goes crazy in a kind of unbelievable way while his kid uses mind powers that are just so random and.. dude [frick] the shining.

Would A.I. have been better if Kubrick was able to direct it?

@MasterMix - I don't think that movie is given enough credit.

@MasterMix - Well, it's actually a really intriguing story about that. You see, Kubrick really wanted this movie to be like a Spielberg movie and Spielberg really wanted it to be like a Kubrick film, since both directors really were close friends and loved the films the other made. So with this movie they worked together to make sort of an in between.

Now, if you've seen the movie, you'd know that there's this sappy ending where everyone gets what they want and it clashes with the overall tone that you'd really expect it to be a Spielberg decision. But really, that was a Kubrick decision, one that everyone on set disagreed with, including Spielberg. But when Kubrick passed away, Spielberg decided to keep it in order for this to be the Spielberg-like film Kubrick always wanted to make.

@Origame - The ending of A.I certainly seems sappy.

Until you remember that robots don't sleep...

Kubrick. Once again the smartest person in the room.

@UltimaRex - What does that have anything to do with this somehow being a good scene?

@MUTO123 -
• The random changing of point of view does not really help emphasise where we are in the Kitchen at the time, we get no real sense of how many people she is fighting and how close she is to danger
• The scene where the guy is supposed to have thrown three knives in the timespan it took Wasp to spin around is dumb, it's not possible and it defies the physics he speaks about later.
• Unnecessary use of digital model for simply shots such as Wasp looking upwards while wearing the suit, something they could have easily achieved by having her do so infront of greenscreen and then replace just the background, but they instead had a completely CGI wasp.
• Speed of the character varies too much and often results in 'motion blur' caused by the digital program used to render skipping certain details while rendering to speed up the process. The mark of good digital movement shots is where you can pause at any frame and have a perfect image.

It's not a terrible action scene, but it needs some refining. Most of it is on the hands of those who did the digital aspects, the same time/cost-cutting techniques were used for Spider-man Homecoming

Ready Player One wasn't baaad even if it was 2 very classic hero stories mashed into one. Also felt a little Spy Kids 3-ish lol

It didn't really light a fire under people here, domestically. China really bailed the film out.
