Darth Maul's SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Cameo Has Been Officially Released Online

Darth Maul's shock return in Solo: A Star Wars Story was an undeniable highlight of an otherwise divisive movie. Now, that scene has been officially released online for you to pore over again and again!

Last night, we brought you some officially released images of Darth Maul as he appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story and now a clip of his scene has found its way online. It's surprising that Lucasfilm has decided to share this before the movie hits Blu-ray as getting to rewatch this jaw-dropping sequence again and again would have obviously been a good incentive to pick that up as soon as it goes on sale.

Then again, it could be that they think fans who didn't watch the movie in
theaters (and many didn't it seems) will be a little more intrigued after seeing this...it will obviously be very interesting to see how sales do, especially as the movie disappointed at the box office. Unfortunately, no matter how well it sells, that's now unlikely to convince Disney to give a sequel the green light which is a real shame.

What did you guys think of Maul's unexpected return? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

I liked Solo a lot at first. The more I think about it, the less I do. But Maul appearing was one of the major detracting points, IMO.

@Nebula - I agreed. In the theatre, opening night with only 9 people in the screening, he showed and got no reaction from the audience. In my head I thought it was cool but on the other hand I was just confused.

@Nebula - I would have been more impressed if it was Prince Xizor. He would have fitted the role of mysterious crime boss so much better. Maul just felt like a very jarring, fan-service based fodder.

Started watching the clone wars in chronological order. Pretty damn great show.

Okay, him just activating the lightsaber for a bit was kind of cute.

I suppose judging from Han's reaction to Obi-Wan and the idea of the force in general in A New Hope, he'll never actually come across Maul in a later movie.

Then again this almost certainly won't be getting a sequel anyway. Which is a bit of a shame, i thought it was fun.

Oh boy. Just to think what his poor mother must've went through when she started crowning.

Cool cameo as I never got round to seeing SOLO at the cinema. A shame he can’t or won’t be further explored if they’ve decided to cancel these SAGA outings.

I'd like to compare the audience reactions to the Maul reveal to those of the other 'red-faced hooded figure' reveal in a prominent Disney movie this year.

I can't do that, though, because I didn't watch Solo, and most people I know didn't either.

@Kyos - As someone who did watch SOLO I can say.....no one really cared

@Kyos - Night and day. Admittedly, I saw IW opening night in IMAX with fans and Solo in IMAX about a week into its run, but Skull got applause and Maul got one or two gasps and mostly silence.

Part of what makes the Red Skull scene works is that it is both totally superfluous fan service, it comes in the middle of the movie (unlike Maul) and you could swap out the character for a generic Stonekeeper and it would be identical, but it ALSO works for newcomers and people who didn't see First Avenger: he's a freaky looking skull faced dude who was punished for looking for the stones. It serves the story and is fine by itself.

Maul, on the other hand, comes at the very end after much build-up of Crimson Dawn and Qi'ra and Vos' mysterious boss, so it isn't adjacent to the plot like Skull was, it IS the plot. But what is gained by making it Maul? Having it at the end and his lines about working together soon makes it sound like this is leading into something. What? Obi-Wan, Solo 2, Darth Maul the Animated Series?

If it isn't leading into anything, then what was gained beyond a gasp making it Maul? Red Skull makes sense cause both he and Thanos were shown to go after the Tesseract (I almost typed Cosmic Cube lol) so they work narratively as parallels, with Thanos being able to do what Schmitt could not. Maul has the *gasp* factor that Skull also has, but none of the rest of it.

Best bit of an average movie. Could set up him being the potential villain for the Kebobi movie, if that ever happens.

@marvel72 - Maul and Obi-Wan already had a few in-canon encounters though, culminating in a definitive ending to their relationship.

@Kyos - Cool, it would be good to see a rematch.

@marvel72 - That "definitive ending to their relationship" was Maul getting killed so unless Kenobi is facing a lifeless corpse, there probably won't be much of a rematch.

@MrDandy - So couldn't we see them fight one last time, you know set the Kenobi movie around the time of Solo.

I think the best follow-up to this would be a Darth Vader movie where she's been tasked to take out Maul.

I thought the dialogue was hammy. Why would the guy need to turn on then off his lightsaber without using it? Other than to be SUUUUUUUUPER blatant to the audience? Is the rest of the film this bad?
