Dave Filoni Teases A Retelling Of ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY In STAR WARS: REBELS

There have been plenty of Easter Eggs connecting the cast of Star Wars: Rebels with the events of Rogue One, and executive producer Dave Filoni has teased a retelling of the film on the show...

Among the massive amounts of Easter Eggs that were packed into Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, many eagle-eyed fans noticed several connections to Star Wars: Rebels, the animated series currently airing on Disney XD. Along with the show's main spacecraft, the Ghost, being glimpsed at several moments, the show's grumpy C1 droid unit, Chopper, was also spotted at the Rebel base on Yavin 4.

Rebels executive producer Dave Filoni confirmed with Entertainment Weekly that he worked in tandem with Rogue One producers to include these small things, though not at the expense of the film. "None of the things we put in really jump out at you," said Filoni. "If you don’t watch Rebels, there’s never a moment where you’re staring at the [movie] screen going, 'Why was that important?' For the people who do know, they get that added level of immersion."

One other tidbit caught by fans was the mention of "General Syndulla" over the intercom. Filoni clarified that this is absolutely a reference to Hera Syndulla, pilot of The Ghost.  “I can clarify that’s absolutely Hera being paged, not her dad,” Filoni confirmed. “The movie gives that away, but I would rather have all the [references] be right. Hera will eventually become a general in the Rebel Alliance.”

With the Ghost being present at the climactic battle over Scarif, Filoni also teased that fans may just see a retelling of the film's harrowing final moments through the lense of whoever is on the Ghost at that time. "I already have some theories about the story behind it," Filoni said. "I can imagine doing that entire [Scarif] battle from their point of view, whoever is on the Ghost at that point." However, seeing that Rebels begins five years before A New Hope and has moved in relatively real time, it could be a while before we see a Rogue One storyline play out.

I think it is important to establish who is on that Ship from the cast of Rebels...but even MORE important...which one is able to beam down to the planet and save Jyn and Andor seconds before the Deep Impact ending.

@IronGenesis -
I'm sure we'll find out who was on the ship as the Rebels series builds to the Battle of Scarif, as they kill off or remove certain main characters and replace them with new members of the main cast.

It's probably safe to say that Kanan and Ezra are probably dead by the time of Rogue One, since they are Jedi and the film takes place just before the original trilogy.

"However, seeing that Rebels begins five years before A New Hope and has moved in relatively real time, it could be a while before we see a Rogue One storyline play out"

If this is the case then we should see their part in Rogue One playing out in 2019 - which would mean it occurs shortly before Star Wars 9 is released. Which is honestly the best time to do it as they could remind people of the original trilogy shortly before the end of the sequel trilogy.

@Scarilian @MattBellissimo -
Actually, the current season of Rebels only takes place two years before Episode IV, so it depends on what you mean by "a while."

Assuming that the Battle of Scarif is the series finale, we will probably only get two more seasons of Rebels at the most.

@Darkknight2149 - Not sure Scarif would be the series finale, or even that particular Rebels season finale. I would almost think it better to be mid-season finale, or even story arc right before end-of-season. Since it's really the Rogue One team's story, not the Rebels. And the Rebel Alliance continues for quite some time. Theoretically the show could go in-universe all the way up until the death of the Emperor, just based on the title "Rebels".

@ComicsBornAndBred @PeterStarker - Yup, it's already being worked on. We're trying to verify its validity before posting about it.

Thanks though, guys.

I'm assuming something is going to happen to Ezra and Kanan. If something has already please don't spoil it as I haven't been watching S3 yet. But either they are both gonna die or one will die and the other may quit being a Jedi and become what Ahsoka Tano might be. Ahsoka in Rebels was a force user and a lightsaber weilder but not a Jedi. Maybe either Kanan or Ezra might go down that path. Let's not forget Tarkin's line to Darth Vader in EpIV. "The Jedi are extinct, their fire has gone out of the universe. You, my friend, are all that's left of their religion". He knows about Kanan and Ezra. He met Kanan. So something must have happened to them. Also lets not forget what Yoda said to Luke in EpVI. "When gone am I, the last of the Jedi you will be".

@tb86 - I think Kanan has to die, but I kinda want Ezra to go bad. As unlikely as it is, part of me hopes he will become Snoke. It'd be nice for it to be someone who at least some of the fans know rather than a character who comes out of nowhere.

@tb86 - If you look at the Ghost in Rogue One, the additonal ship (phantom now droid ship) is not attached to the Ghost. I assume, if they are alive, Ezra and Kanan are off on another mission. Why else wouldnt they send Jedi to retrieve the plans.

I think one will die eventually. But remember we were convinced Ahsoka would die in the Clone Wars. Again it likely they could become like Ahsoka/Maz (lightside force users) or the Bendu. But I doubt that would strive them away from the rebellion.

As for Tarkins statements. I now think of it as him almost "brainwashing" himself into the Empires own propaganda. The Empire have convinced the galaxy the jedi died out what seems hundreds of years ago, even though its only been 20. Additonally, he may take the veiw that the jedi are to few to overturn the Jedi, and Vader (being powerful in the force) is all that represents the strenght the Jedi once had in greater numbers.

As for Yodas comments. Jedi is both the singular and plural. If Kanan and Ezra is dead, then ye he is the last of the Jedi. If they are alive and Jedi, then Luke is still the Last of the Jedi.

@BIGBMH - I don't want Ezra to turn to the darkside. It was interesting seeing him flirt with it with maul. But to have him turn to the Darkside would truly undermine the tragedy of Anakins fall.

@StormXmen123 - Well they kind of already undermined it by having his grandson fall to the darkside too. It's also not like Anakin was the first jedi turned sith since Dooku was a jedi too.

We haven't got many options for the kid
1) Death
2) Dark side
3) Stayed around but we just never saw him in the movies (not a good option)
4) Walks away from the fight (similar to Ahsoka. probably too similar, which would undermine her story)
