STAR WARS: Ewan McGregor Doesn't Believe That OBI-WAN KENOBI Movie Is Actually Happening

Despite reports that Obi-Wan Kenobi is in the works at Disney/Lucasfilm, Christopher Robin star Ewan McGregor has now revealed that he's heard nothing concrete about it actually becoming a reality...

It's been over a decade since Revenge of the Sith was released and during that time, Ewan McGregor has been asked over and over again about the possibility of returning to play Obi-Wan Kenobi in a spinoff movie. When Disney purchased Lucasfilm, it finally appeared as if that could happen but it's no closer to becoming a reality right now, especially after Solo disappointed at the box office back in May.

During a recent interview to promote the release of Christopher Robin, McGregor was asked to provide an update on the long rumoured release and made it clear that nothing is being worked on as of right now. "I would totally do it, of course," he confirmed, before adding: "
There’s no plans as such to do it, as far as I know." Well, it's fair to say that's not what most of us wanted to hear about the project!

There have been rumours that the movie will debut on Disney's planned streaming service, while other sites have claimed that all future Star Wars spinoffs have been put on hold while Lucasfilm reevaluates its plans. McGregor, meanwhile, concluded by saying that he believes there is potential there. "There must be a good story to tell as they’re doing spin-offs – there’s likely to be a good Obi-Wan between me and Alec Guinness." What do you guys think? Let us know your thoughts in the usual place.

@JonesTheCat - You have got that wrong it is the so-called fans nowadays that suck majority wise. I don't even know why certain people are included in that. There should be a separate category. Maybe critics and then actual fans.

@Nebula - Before Solo, I think it was. Now, I think Lucasfilm are gonna be very hesitant whether they do single character movies set between III and IV.

I hope they make it, and this quote probably means nothing, but you could see why Disney wouldn’t proceed. Not many people wanted a Han Solo movie so why would they want a Obi-wan movie? To them maybe better to continue with Rian Johnson and Benioff & Weiss films the feature brand new ensembles.

@TheUnworthyThor - if you think ruin is getting that trilogy you're foolin yourself.

D&D are more likely to get their movies or series considering fan response.

probably 1 out of every 10 fans want RJ to have anything to do with SW.

Only a matter of time till its announced. It explains RJs asshole behavior twards the fans the last few months.

Plus the dude compares lukes death with the most trivial moments in SW, that don't even make sense.

the guy understands SW about as far as he can throw jaba du hutt.

@Kd666dash3dot7 - D&D? And yeah I’m sure you speak for everyone all around the world. Even if Disney was concerned about Rian Johnson’s treatment of established characters that’s not a concern when he is dealing with all new characters and all new events in a separate part of the Galaxy.

McGregor-wan is right.

There needs to be a good story, a reason for obi wan to be doing something other than watching over luke.

maybe do like ethan van skiver suggested, make it to where luke is threatened by maybe being exposed and obi wan protects him with out luke ever knowing it. maybe he needs to prevent the information getting to the empire.

@Kd666dash3dot7 - that's an interesting premise, my only question is how would whoever finds Luke know he's Vader's kid in the first place when only a small handful know anything about Like and Leia having survived? Obi-Wan, Yoda, Senator Organa and the Owens.

@Oberlin4Prez - Yeah, who could ever figure out that Luke Skywalker is somehow related to Anakin Skywalker? Who could ever solve that puzzle?

I don’t think it should happen anyway, I’m surprised fans want this

This is the only Star Wars spin off I really want (although a bounty hunter movie with Boba Fett, IG-88 etc. would also be very cool).

It still baffles me that they made Solo over Kenobi. I did like Solo, but a story with Obi-Wan during his exile could have been so much better.

It's actually one of the only spin offs they could do with an original actor from previous films. McGregor has the perfect age now for it, so please make it a priority after episode 9.

@ChrisRed - any movie with IG-88 as a main character would turn around my expectations for the spinoffs.

Idk if there's ever been a character more well known to a fanbase that hasn't had even a single line of dialogue on screen.

It baffles me that they thought it was worth anytime at all, returning to characters we've already met and seen plenty of. My favorite part of Rogue One was getting to see the world of Star Wars via new characters points of view.

I want a Wookie movie a la Planet Of The Apes directed by Matt Reeves, but i'm damn sure that ain't happening in the meantime Ewan Sir. lol

As much as i'd love an Obi wan Kenobi film, i won't believe a thing until something's released officialy and i get to see Sir Ewan McGregor weaving a lightsaber like a maniac on set while making saber sounds with his mouth again.

Sadly Rebels kind of ruined the perfect Obi-wan movie where Crimson Dawn finds out about Luke’s identity somehow and Obi-wan has to somehow stop that information from getting to the Empire including what could have been the final confrontation between him and Maul.

Obi-Wan, first Star Wars movie that doesn’t leave one planet, western/last samurai esque, Hutt Cartel/Crimson Dawn/Tusken Raiders, conflict of exposing himself by helping farmers.

Just spitballing things I would like to see.

@Saintsinnister - a good way to convey Kenobi’s struggle with his exile would be to have Qui-Gon return as a force ghost, write some good material for Ewan McGregor to chew on with how he failed Qui-Gon by failing with Anakin.

@IKidYouNotMan - It would be really cool to have a really small one, possibly even like Dredd or The Raid -except stuck on a planet / in a building in space somewhere?

(also without the gore)

Even a version of the typical "space ship used as haunted house" would even be a cool change of pace at this point.

This. This, above all the other blatant examples of Kathleen Kennedy and Disney having absolutely NO IDEA what they are doing with the Star Wars franchise, is the one thing that really makes me furious. They can cobble together garbage prequels for Han and the Death Star and other planned trash.... yet the 1 prequel a good deal of people are actively on board with, they refuse to get going.

I legitimately feel like Kathleen Kennedy's franchise strategy is to literally do the opposite of what they know the fans want.

Idiots.
