STAR WARS: Rian Johnson And Ram Bergman Confirm That Work On The New Trilogy Has Started

While we're still a long way off from Rian Johnson's mysterious new Star Wars trilogy, The Last Jedi director and his writing partner Ram Bergman have confirmed that they've started working on the series.

With Star Wars: The Last Jedi having created many new perspectives regarding the Skywalker story, it may be easy to forget that director Rian Johnson will be diving back into a galaxy far, far away with a brand new trilogy, free of any past constraints and prior storylines.

While we're still a long way off from seeing what Johnson has in store for us, his writing partner Ram Bergman confirmed to Empire this past weekend that they've started mapping everything out. “We’ve started. Slowly, slowly, but we’ve started. Hopefully soon we’re going to get busier.”

Johnson also quickly spoke to the publication, noting that he's "excited to figure out what it's going to be." Story details  are obviously scarce, but it's been confirmed that the trilogy won't be affiliated with prior installments, nor will it adapt previously released materials such as the Knights of the Old Republic video game series.

What do you hope to see in future Star Wars films? Let us know down below!

While I absolutely adored THE LAST JEDI, I genuinely think people would be a lot more receptive to Rian Johnson's filmmaking, style and approach to mythology on a non-Skywalker film than they were with Episode 8.

@FromACertainPOV - I said this right after seeing TLJ with how divisive that film was, but I think he has the perfect sensibilities and style for a KOTOR type story.

@Zer0squad - I definitely agree with that latter point, I love KOTOR 2 especially, due in part to it's more complex morality and greyer mysticism which I think Johnson brought brilliantly to TLJ.

@FromACertainPOV - Exactly. Had he done so with a KOTOR story rather than a Skywalker centric film, I guarantee Rian would be universally worshiped by Star Wars fanboys instead of being accused of raping their childhoods by half.

@FromACertainPOV -

I agree. Like many, I have my reservations about The Last Jedi but I think the reception to a Rian Johnson's Star Wars film would have been different if it had been an original story rather than the continuation of the Skywalker saga.

I'm kinda hoping they'll leave the original Star Wars permanently after Episode IX and the Obi-Wan spin-off to concentrate on a whole new saga like what Star Trek: The Next Generation did at its time, but... money, money, money.

Look damnit, wether you liked it or not, (I loved it), the Last Jedi proved this guy doesn't want to play it safe and make a predictable cookie cutter film. If he managed to successfully pull it off with characters that he really can't just do WHATEVER he wanted to, imagine what he could do with his OWN story. Perfect man for the job.

I liked TLJ.

Other than IX, I really only want a Kenobi movie

@DaHyro - Me too. Besides a Kenobi movie, I want a Knights of the Old Republic trilogy and a Vader film with Starkiller, set before Rogue One.
