ALIEN Reboot Adds More Names To Its Cast; Plot Synopsis Promises A Back To Basics Approach For Franchise

20th Century Studios has revealed (via SFFGazette.com) that its new Alien movie Cailee Spaeny (Mare of Easttown) is set to begin production in Budapest on March 9.

The cast has also expanded, adding David Jonsson (Industry), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), Aileen Wu (Away from Home), and the recently announced Isabela Merced (Rosaline). The latter is probably the biggest name here, but some newly revealed plot details might go some way in explaining why the reboot hasn't enlisted an A-List cast.

"In this ninth entry in the immensely popular and enduring film series," reads the official synopsis, "a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe."

It sounds like the franchise is finally going back to basics, a relief after the convoluted events of Prometheus and Alien: Covenant

Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Don’t Breathe) directs from a screenplay he wrote with his frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues. Ridley Scott, who directed the original Alien and produced and directed the aforementioned latest two instalments, and Michael Pruss (Boston Strangler) are producing under their Scott Free banner.

Brent O’Connor (Bullet Train), Elizabeth Cantillon (Persuasion) and Tom Moran (The Donut King) all serve as executive producers.

We don't have a release date for the movie and it's unclear whether this will be a theatrical release or, like Prey, one that heads straight to streaming platform Hulu.

It's previously been reported that Alvarez pitched a new Alien movie to Scott several years ago, with the legendary filmmaker contacting him a couple of years ago to make it a reality. We'd be shocked if there isn't some connective tissue to the original franchise here, but don't anticipate any of these characters having "Ripley" as a surname!

Stay tuned to SFFGazette.com for the latest updates on the Alien reboot as we have them.

Only interested if they recast 'Jones' the ginger tomcat from the original Alien - then make him a Flerken.

I always look forward to seeing a new Alien movie, hoping they capture the magic of the first two.

@marvel72 - problem is they're very formulaic, slasher movies. Great ones at that, I'm not stating otherwise.

But "going back to the formula" can only take them so far.

I must be the only one who actually enjoyed Prometheus especially and the Covenant. 😭

@RitoRevolto - I liked them both. Because they were original

@TCronson - I will admit Covenant wasn't as good, but I liked it off the strength of furthering the Prometheus origin story.

I enjoyed Prometheus and Covenent, flawed as they were. Would like to have seen Scott finish his prequel trilogy, but if they can do for this franchise what Prey did for the Predator franchise, well that would be kind of cool wouldn't it?
TCronson
TCronson - 3/5/2023, 2:23 PM
@MosquitoFarmer - No, Prey didn't do anything for the Predator franchise, it's not better than Predator 2 and Predators, being better than Black's Predator is hardly a big achievement.

@TCronson - No, Prey would have to be the best of the sequels, sitting nicely between the original and Predators. Predator 2 is utter trash, the only reason I rank it higher than Black's is because it's so bad you can have fun laughing at it. Black's is just bad, not even in an amusing way.

@MosquitoFarmer - I adored Prometheus despite it having dumb characters.

I thought the whole Engineers thing was way more compelling than seeing everyone getting killed by the xenomorphs for the 500 time.

The worst part IMO was also the need of having a xenomorph in the end. They should've kept that for the sequel.

Never got around finishing Covenant.

I may be one of the few defenders of the Prometheus/ Covenant films….but I would have liked to see the last film of that series and where it was going over this. It ended on an interesting cliff hanger.
IronGenesis

@MrDandy - yeah like where was it heading? David was going to create the aliens we eventually see in the original film? And then they would kill him?

@MrDandy - Prometgeus was a breath of fresh creativeness air into the franchise IMO.

So the synopsis talks about the ninth entry in the series, yet it's still referred to as a reboot. Hope it really it isn't a reboot though. The Alien universe is big enough to tell a completely new story without it having to be a reboot.

@bkmeijer1 - Its interesting because there are technically only 6 movies in the series. AvP aren't part of the main series. The things they show in that movie don't make sense with the original 4 and prequels.

I loved the 1st 2 Alien movies, & I've watched all the others, so I'll watch this.

I just hope it doesn't devolve into a generic teens being pursued by the maniac/monster bit like a Friday the 13th type movie.

hmmm Ridley Scott is producing, and it takes place on a distant world.... could this actually be Covenant's spiritual sequel? coz at the end of Covenant David had over 1000 bodies to experiment on etc what if the Xeno's got too much for David and he had to crash the ship on this new planet and some of the civilians awaken in the aftermath of the crash?

A “group of young people”. That sounds bad already. Appealing to the younger generation with Scream teen slasher vibes. Like Aliens vs Predator Reqium.
