Alien: Romulus is now in theaters, and while the response from fans and critic has been largely positive, there are a few story choices that haven't gone over particularly well.

If you haven't had the chance to see the movie yet, beware of major spoilers from this point on.

When Rain Carradine and her crew arrive at the derelict space station, Romulus, they discover that the ship's android is still functional. They plug him in, and we see that the synthetic (sorry... artificial person) is the same model as Ash from Ridley Scott's original movie.

Yes, the late Ian Holm is resurrected via a combination of CGI and animatronics, and, as you might expect, the decision has been met with some backlash.

During an interview with EW, director Fede Álvarez explains why they used Holm's likeness for this new android, and reveals that he reached out to the actor's family to make sure they were okay with the decision.

“Historically, there’s just a limited amount of synthetics, and that’s why some come back a few times. So we were talking, and Ridley and I felt like the one that has never been back was the best one of them all, the original model played by Ian Holm.”

“The whole thing started with me calling the estate and talking with his widow,” the filmmaker continued. “She felt that Ian was given the cold shoulder by Hollywood in the last years of his life, that he would've loved to be part of more projects after The Hobbit, but he wasn't. So she was thrilled about the idea of having him back.”

Though this android is not actually Ash - who was destroyed along with the Nostromo in Alien - Rook is just as untrustworthy, and has a very similar prime directive.

“He has the likeness, but he has a different demeanor. Rook and Ash have the same knowledge because it’s all Mother,” says Álvarez, referring to the operating system that runs the spacecrafts in Alien franchise. “It's a different android, but it's the same consciousness of Mother that moved from one android to the other.”

What did you make of the decision to use Holm's likeness for Rook? Let us know in the comments section down below.

"The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful Alien franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe."

The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu. Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) directs from a screenplay he wrote with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (Don’t Breathe 2) based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett.

Alien: Romulus is produced by Ridley Scott (Napoleon), who directed the original Alien and produced and directed the series’ entries Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, Michael Pruss (Boston Strangler), and Walter Hill (Alien), with Fede Alvarez, Elizabeth Cantillon (Charlie’s Angels), Brent O’Connor (Bullet Train), and Tom Moran (Unstoppable) serving as executive producers.

@SonOfAGif - Even though they're still big franchises, I'm glad theaters are still doing well while Marvel sorts their shit out and releases movies less frequently.

This year for films has been great.

Ian Holm appearing after his real life death several years did make me feel a bit weird and I kind of wish it wasn’t done, mainly because it was a bit distracting. If anything, I think having a replica of Andy that was more cold and knowledgeable could have been an interesting test of his ‘humanity’ as he interacted with his double.

Hearing that Ian’s widow was enthusiastic is nice to hear though and the stuff about him feeling snubbed is sad as well. The guy deserved more roles and I feel a bit better about this now hearing that.

Film as a whole was ok. Some good elements and some that didn’t land for me, including that finale.

@Cass - that or just use an entirely new actor
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 8/17/2024, 4:57 PM
@Cass - well, there are wax museums that feature passed-away celebs, Star Wars, the sacred holy grail of sh1tty movies, did it, and many other films have resurrected dead actors. So what.
It's not like they bring them back to disgrace them.

Also, I'm sure the actors contracts lasted longer than their life so the studios own their likeness.

Let's say Hulk Hogan died tomorrow. Is it bad that Chris Helmsworth will still play him and star in a Hulk Hogan movie?

@lazlodaytona - Difference is Chris Hemsworth is tributing him, and celebrating him. A wax figure remembers him. A cgi mockup, uses his face and prances around like a ghost. Its vile.

@Taonrey - sure, that too. I was just throwing out an idea.

Fassbender or Henriksen could easily have pulled it off

I do get that he wanted to use “the original” but imo Lance Henriksen would have been a better choice (despite his age), we have three living actors and one dead. Why no go for the living

My only big problem with doing it, is he should have only been in the first scene and they could have shot it with an animotrinic like they did with bishop in Alien 3 instead of doing that weird face filter.

"Resurrecting" dead celebrities with CGI is ghoulis, there's zero reason why it couldn't have been a different looking android and the way the credits were worded has me worried that they used A.I.

Screw this.

It was my only real issue with the movie, but unfortunately it was a major issue. It would have been fine if it was just for a scene but he stuck around until the end. Fassbender would have been a much better choice. Other than that though, I really enjoyed Romulus.
FrankenDad
FrankenDad - 8/19/2024, 8:17 AM
@whatevtrev - exactly my sentiments. At first I thought “Ok, I can get past this if they just move forward.” But he kept coming back through the end. Fassbender would’ve been much better. They couldve messed his look up enough to make it battle work but still recognizable and, most importantly, not so stupid looking. Still a fun time in the theater overall, but Holm’s stuff really threw a wrench into things.

The movie was great until that scene came out. It looks like a guy with a filter his face.

@Gabimaru - it wasn’t even aligned correctly in some of the earlier speaking scenes. Awful.

Bringing back dead celebrities with CGI does not bother me one single bit, I actually prefer they do that more as long as the family & estate is cool with it!
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 8/18/2024, 7:06 AM
@Shmokey20 - What if the celebrity didn't get along his estate? What if they wouldn't want their likeness to be used after their death, but the estate wants an easy paycheck?

The inclusion of Ian Holm was so badly done it was more of a distraction than anything, for me. Every time I had to see that loose and lazy up close cgi(particularly bad on the moving lips and eyes) it took me straight out of the story. They’d have been better off keeping it in the shadows(we are at least perceptive enough to understand who that is in the prosthetic form) or using a different model altogether.
