James Cameron Tells Fans Complaining About ALIENS' 4K Transfer To "Move Out Of Mom's Basement"

The recent 4K remaster of Aliens didn't exactly receive rave reviews from film fans, but director James Cameron has no time for those complaints. In fact, he believes those people should "get a life."

Earlier this year, two of James Cameron's most beloved movies, Aliens and True Lies, were re-released as 4K remasters. That was long-awaited by fans and, in particular, physical media collectors.

Unfortunately, they ended up being a disappointment for many. The picture quality was deemed subpar and social media was flooded with comparison videos and complaints that a 2010 remaster of Aliens, for example, was vastly superior.

They did largely appear to be a subpar upscale of old scans of original prints and, in the case of True Lies, there was evidence of artificial intelligence usage to enhance video quality.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com), Cameron - the visionary director also responsible for Titanic and the Avatar franchise - didn't mince his words when asked about the continued criticisms.

"When people start reviewing your grain structure, they need to move out of mom's basement and meet somebody," he stated. "Right? I'm serious. I mean, are you f—ing kidding me? I've got a great team that does the transfers. I do all the color and density work. I look at every shot, every frame, and then the final transfer is done by a guy who has been with me [for years]."

"All the Avatar films are done that way. Everything is done that way. Get a life, people, seriously."

Those remarks may sound harsh but likely stem from frustrations over what Cameron believes are unfair complaints about the quality of each movie.

In another recent interview, he talked more about the complicated process of remastering movies like these when he said, "We recompose, shot by shot, going through the film, and I'm pretty serious about this. I don't just let somebody else go through it because I have such a vivid memory of what the color was and what we fought for on the set and in post."

"It was important to get it just right because, theoretically, we shouldn't have to do it again. 4K is sufficiently above the innate resolution of the photochemistry of that period. Are we going to do 8K? 12K? You're going to see the grain more clearly," Cameron concluded.

Back to this latest conversation with the filmmaker, though, and he also briefly weighed in on what he's seen from the upcoming Alien: Romulus, a movie his name has been attached to in several different interviews over the past year or so.

"I saw a rough cut six months ago, so I’m sure it’s changed a lot. And I viewed it once. I gave some notes to [director Fede Álvarez]. He and I aren’t close pals. I mean, I wish him the best with it, but I think it’s been overstated that I had some big creative input to that film," he said. "I think Ridley [Scott] did because Ridley was an actual producer on the film. So I’m just putting it in perspective."

Be sure to let us know your thoughts on Cameron's comments in the usual place.

Sure seems like the complaints were about an objectively bad picture quality. This isn’t criticizing some subjective creative decisions in your movie Cameron. What a petty thing to fight back about.

@mountainman - one could argue it's equally petty to complain about picture quality when it's something you can just not buy because it exits in like tons of other formats. You either want to buy it or you don't, which is completely valid, but this constant online battlefield over EVERYTHING is [frick]ing tiresome.

I for one am kind of glad that some of the old guard are fighting back against this nonsense like Cameron and JLC because maybe MAYBE the noise can finally be turned down a bit

@SATW42 - I mean yeah. But equally just release decent 4k version. I agree with @mountainman - its not a creative choice, or subjective. Some tvs require 4k versions. Ridiculous.

@TheRogue - Yes visual quality is objective not subjective. Which is why these complaints are valid.

As someone who is a physical media whore I resent this statement. While the higher resolution and the accurate colors for his new 4k remaster is amazing, the amount of DNR he decided to use on EVERYTHING was ridiculous. He wants to act like film grain is a bad thing, that's where all the detail is! He hasn't shot on film since True Lies? He wants all of his movies to look like Avatar.

TLDR: buy the alien quadrilogy blu ray boxset, or if you don't care then buy the new ones. Watching this DNR bullshit through a digital copy is murder. Thanks for listening.

Also find the laserdisc copy of The Terminator, the 35mm copy of T2, the 35mm copy or laserdisc copy of True Lies, thank me later.

This should be fun, most of the people here who idolize Cameron are also the one's who get their knickers in a twist when the "hollywood elite" tell them to get out of their moms basement, so I'm interested to see how this plays out.

I get what he's saying, but c'mon, if you're going to set an expectation for a product being better than the last, then don't be surprised when people scrutinize what you're putting out, the people who care about this stuff will absolutely notice, obviously lol

They want what they paid for. This is just more evidence of a cash grab.

One of the reasons why I feel no need to update/replace my DVD collection with Blu-Rays or 4K. Too many horror stories of the HD transfer messing up something about the movie/show.

Damn I guess when you’re a billionaire you can just insult your fan base as you please lol

I get both sides but people who got rich by people liking their stuff (movies , products, etc) or image, shouldn’t really throw rocks at them .

But at this point who cares I guess

Bought it, quality was disappointing, sent it back. I don't live in my mom's basement, in fact I'm almost 60 and have been a fan for most of my life. FK off you arrogant POS. At least I got my money back. I think Jerkoff James might run into some trouble trying to push off subpar remasters in his next money grab.
