AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Director James Cameron Wonders If He Waited Too Long To Make The Upcoming Sequel

Nearly 13 years have passed since Avatar arrived in theaters, and filmmaker James Cameron has now confessed that he's concerned he may have waited too long between that and Avatar: The Way of Water...

Avatar was released way back in 2009, meaning 13 years will have passed by the time Avatar: The Way of Water arrives in theaters this December. There's a lot of excitement surrounding the sequel, though we can't help but wonder whether the follow-up is coming too late.

After all, there are kids and teenagers who weren't even born when the first instalment was released, while even die-hard fans of the franchise seem to have moved on from Pandora in the years that have passed. Superhero movies are also vastly more popular now than they were in 2009 (a year after Iron Man was released), so is it still possible for Avatar: The Way of Water to succeed?

As you might expect, filmmaker James Cameron has been asking himself the same question.

"I think I could have made a sequel two years later and have it bomb because people didn't relate to the characters or the direction of the film," Cameron tells The New York Times (via SFFGazette.com"My personal experience goes like this: I made a sequel called Aliens, seven years after the first movie. It was very well received. I made a sequel called Terminator 2 seven years after the first movie. It did an order of magnitude of more, in revenue, than the first film."

"I was a little concerned that I had stretched the tether too far, in our fast-paced, modern world, with Avatar 2 coming in 12 years later," he acknowledges. "Right until we dropped the teaser trailer, and we got 148 million views in 24 hours. There's that scarce seen but wondered at principle, which is, 'Wow, we haven't seen that in a long time, but I remember how cool it was back then.'"

"Does that play in our favor? I don't know," Cameron concluded. "I guess we're going to find out."

It certainly feels like there's a lot of excitement there for Avatar: The Way of Water, and we're guessing Disney will start pulling out all the stops over the next few months to get the hype train rolling. The upcoming Avatar re-release should help, though we can't help but wonder whether this follow-up will be deemed a "disappointment" solely because it doesn't earn as much as its predecessor!

To whet audiences' appetites, Disney/20th Century Studios will re-release Avatar in theaters on September 23. As for Avatar: The Way of Water, that arrives in theaters worldwide on December 16.

The main appeal of Avatar was the visuals and the escapism aspect, escaping to somewhere entirely new. The problem with the sequel is that we already know this world, so what's the appeal? I guess the intent was that the underwater setting would help make the escapism work, but at the same time it seems you are doubling down on the uninteresting and generic human aspect from the first film.

By waiting too long you have lost a segment of your audience while also building expectations in terms of the visuals that I don't think they have actually met. The visuals are not a massive leap forward compared to the first film, or at least they do not seem as such currently.

@Scarilian - thats also the appeal of something like the mcu, yet we keep coming back.

@Scarilian - I think the trailer being viewed 148M times says otherwise. It received such a positive response that I think its audience is ready to come back to the world of Pandora. It also depends on reception when the film releases and I have no doubt Cameron made a great film.

@Origame - You just couldn’t help yourself could you?

@LiteralSense - ...my mcu comment literally had nothing negative in it. I'm saying, just like his point on avatar, the mcu is there for visuals and escapism. If those are reasons why avatar isn't worth coming back to, then the mcu wouldn't be as successful as it is.

It will do really well I’m sure with what’s comming out at that time in December
Once it gains abit traction in the visual side from people saying how amazing it looks it will just draw people in to go watch it

But it depends if it’s good enough for them repeat views

That’s where the moneys made

Well now the next three all come out with seven years, so you tell me. I guess we'll see if this world is worth it in December. It'll be interesting to see how much they make this next two weeks. I bet they extend it if the numbers are astronomical

Would have been better to not have been made.

@Origame - The first one wasn't a very good or memorable film. It was more of a toy because of it being a 3D gimmick. That's it.
I mean yeah the next lot will probably have a memorable story to it, sure. I hope so at least. I just couldn't give a toss about it.

@BritishMonkey - ...that doesn't mean it shouldn't exist. You don't have to see it.

It is quite an interesting experiment. Particularly with the re-release beforehand.

I could not care less about Avatar but I'm pretty interested in how the movie-going public react and whether they get sucked back in or not.

The majority was not asking for a sequel, regardless. So there were no strict expectations.

It might make $1 billion, but it's not going to hit anywhere close to the original. Visuals are all this franchise has. The story was trash. Still crazy to me that the Roger Dean case was thrown out the way it was too.

@TheFinestSmack - It’s going to make a billion outside the US alone.

People are acting like the movie will bomb. It may not make as much as the first movie but it will be a hit. Playing are deluding themselves. The average movie goer will watch the movie, even many of the haters will watch it.

@TheSuperMex - I think so too. I can definitely see it crack 1 billion, and wouldn't even be surprised if it does 2.

And I think timing might play into that, since I think the timing is perfect.
