BATTLESHIP Storms To The #1 Spot Overseas; Looks Set For $300M Before Opening In The US

There's over a month until Battleship opens in the US, but early figures for how it's performing overseas indicate that Universal may have a big hit on their hands. Read on for details.

Despite a mixed reaction from critics, Battleship has opened up impressively overseas over a month before it's released in the US on May 18th. With a reported budget of $209 million (some analysts believe it to actually be closer to $250 million) the studio should be feeling confident after it hit the #1 spot in nearly every single country it was released in this past Wednesday. Based on how it is currently performing, the Peter Berg hemled flick is expected to bring in over $300 million from foreign box office receipts. While there are some concerns that it will under-perform when it is finally released in the states, it now seems as if what it makes overseas (it was released today in an additional 26 territories, taking it to 40 in total) will be more than enough to make it a hit for Universal.

In Australia, Battleship took $1.1M on Wednesday (the same as Iron Man and Thor and twice as much as John Carter). In Korea, sources indicate that it is "dominating the box office with Korea leading the pack." An impressive $2.8M actually made it the biggest opening for an English language non-sequel ever there. In the UK, it grossed $1.5M on Wednesday, no doubt helped by the fact that the kids are off school for an Easter break. Previews for Thor last year took £730K in comparison. Over in France, it opened with $870K and made $132K in Belgium. Many thanks to Deadline for the above details.

Rihanna was OK...I'm not exactly a fan of hers but for a popcorn action movie she done ok , I think we will see more and more flicks releasing os first maybe it lets studios give movies more breathing space.

@sharkknight Do you see a hundred slow motion shots in Avengers? Or action scenes with eight different things going on in it? I really don't get your constant comparisons of the Avengers and Transformers.

Rihanna wasn't bad but her role didn't give her that much to do. I will say that I was suprised by the level that the filmmakers went to to show how courage has no boundaries. I liked that part of the film.

I hope it does good. Peter Berg has a very shaky resume, sometimes he hits it out of the park (The Rundown) and sometimes he drops the ball (Hancock). Having Rihanna, posterchild for the promotion of spousal abuse, isn't helping any matters. Brooklyn Decker... she isn't Katie Holmes bad, but I'm reserving judgment. The trailers have me hooked, though.

It's the International Market that keeps good films alive when America kills its own babies prematurely like John Carter. We in the international community pay no attention to US reviewers unlike its moviegoers!

People need to realize that films only make about half of the total international box office receipts.

Also... no one will give a shit about this once it releases in the U.S.

My kids want to see it because Rihanna is in the picture. Otherwise I would have rented it. It looks like a "Clash of the Titans"/"Terminator: Salvation" kind of film.

Good for them, they saw an open spot in the movies scheduled for release and made money with no competition. It's a repeat of what happened when Ace Ventura was released and it took the top spot or when Man's Best Friend came out and it took the #5 spot. Sometimes the studios make a mistake and another grabs the opening and runs with it. However, in the US it will open the 2nd week of Avengers domination and the week before MIB III. It will be hard to pull in big numbers in that time slot.

Of the two recent movies Kitsch is starring in this is not the one that deserves to make more money. To me John Carter was the perfect example of an enjoyable "not too deep" action movie, while this looks like Transformers, which I consider a severely less enjoyable "not too deep" type of action movie. The difference? John Carter had heart, Transformers had not.

Just came back from watching this. This movie will be a surprise hit for 2012. Amazing. a little boring in the middle, but picks up to the end. If you are not a stuck up fart smell loving arse hole and if you enjoy some mindless action movies, this movie is heaven for you.
Only bad about this movie was liam wasn't in the thick of the action.
