BOX OFFICE: PROMETHEUS Makes $3.5M In Midnight Grosses

Deadline reveals that 20th Century Fox and Ridley Scott's Prometheus grossed an impressive $3.561 million in its North American midnight premiere last night, screening at 1,368 North American theaters. The film performed better than recent blockbusters Men In Black 3 and Snow White And The Huntsman (which grossed $1.6M and $1.4M, respectively, in their midnight premieres). The studio has called this a "fantastic star".

Concerning how much Prometheus will make in its opening weekend, box office observers are divided. Various estimates are ranging from $35M to $55M+. The movie has the advantage of 3D and IMAX ticket sales to help its intake. Dreamworks' Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (which also opens this week) is expected to take the top spot this weekend, potentially grossing anywhere from $45M to $55M (if not more). What will you be seeing this weekend?

@DD: Yeah but what can they expect for 8 bucks? 2 hours of entertainment and some popcorn, that's all it is, even if it's an awesome movie.

But I am not a Ridley Scott super fan so I guess it might disappoint them, which I can understand.

I've never watched Alien, and I put off watching it when I decided I wanted to see Prometheus. I was looking forward to this film for a few months, I saw it on the first day of release in the UK and... I left the screening quite disappointed. It was quite a lackluster film with a bland and predictable story. The only parts worth watching were the beginning up to the meeting on the Prometheus ship, and then the last 20 minutes of the film, the rest was very bland and did very little to progress the plot. Having said that, Michael Fassbender's David steals the show as the most interesting character in the film by a long shot.

I went to see it with a friend who is a big Alien fan, and he really enjoyed it, so it seems it's a film tailored to Alien fans, which is where it fails for me, it's not accessible to new audiences.

This film could've been amazing, but instead it spends most of it's time just screaming "SEQUEL!"

Kind of a Scott/Kubrick hybrid and thats a good thing. Great visuals and tone...everyone will be left with questions but didnt we also have questions at the end of 2001?

Great movie for those of us who grew up with Alien & Aliens. For the generation that thinks the Alien vs Predator series is the superior series, this movie isn't for you. Design of this film is much in the same as the classic Alien movie.

Were the visuals Great..[frick] Yeah
Did Fassbender steal the show...[frick] yeah

Did they explain anything...[frick] No
Was it Scary..[frick] NO
Was it pointless...[frick] YEAH"

Cosign. False tension (running in front of the falling ship instead of making a right/left, playing with a strange alien creature that has hissed at you twice already.) Pointless and boring film that accomplished nothing but setting up a sequel that won't come.
